  • Thank you so much for sharing with me Tanya. You are right, teaching is a full time job by itself. It is so good that you are able to give some time to English Club as well.
The best part of teaching is that you really can see that you are making a difference. The students leave better than they came to you. You know that you have helped them and it makes you feel really good.
I am lucky that my wife also likes teaching and if I went to another country she would want to come along too. It is much harder for an attorney to leave where they are practicing law. I lost my father and then my mother not too many years ago and it is very difficult. It is wonderful that you have been able to involve yourself in teaching so that you have a rewarding career. It makes life so much better when you can enjoy going to work. Don't you agree?

    Have a great week,

    Bob
  • continuing my reply as Part 2...
As for University teaching, I have either 12 or 13 years of teaching in the fields of Anthropology and Biology because I chose to combine the two for my research. I also taught in a number of programs which combined field work and laboratory/classroom work. I especially enjoyed my summer teaching with teenagers classified as "Gifted-Talented".

Now my work has much less opportunity for teaching and helping people so I am trying to help here. As I stated in part of my blog on other cultures, in reference to the people here learning English:

"You will be the future of the world. You who learn English will be the bridge between cultures to help bring all of the competing groups and countries together for the better of mankind."

I truly believe this and so I do my best to help them learn and set the stage for them and their children to lead in the effort of global understanding. I gather that you are of the same belief and see that you are doing a wonderful job helping our friends here. Do keep up the good work, because it does make a difference :-)

As far as native speakers who can help out, I am working on recruiting others so there are more of us to answer questions when people have problems. This is a wonderful resource for students and I can see improvements in confidence and in grammar. Many times people just need to be taught something they have not been shown before. I hope you know how much you are appreciated.

    All my best,

    Bob
  • Yes Tanya, You are very sharp about the second mouse getting the cheese after the first mouse has sprung the trap. Maybe some caught the reference and laughed, but you are the first to comment on the little joke/riddle.

I am also very pleased to meet you here. I have only been in Texas since graduate school but that has been maybe half my life:D .....

I was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. My father was working on his MS in Wildlife Biology and forestry. My mother was a nursing supervisor and they lived in the married student housing on the LSU campus. That would also count as Deep southern US you will agree. I lived in many parts of Louisiana as a child because of my father's field research, but they always tried to make our home in towns with excellent schools (which is exactly what my wife and I have done with ours when they were little).

My recent English teaching experience has been with immigrants who needed help (but is strictly unpaid volunteer work). In graduate school I used to tutor student athletes who needed help. I started helping them to understand Biology, but quickly found that most of them needed more help with English composition. That was a class that they could easily fail because they had not learned their own language well enough to write college level essays (or even watered down level required for special English classes for athletes). They were good kids, but because of their size or exceptional athletic talents they had been allowed to miss too many classes during practice or traveling to games. I also saw people who should not have been placed in classes at a university because they were academically weak despite meeting minimum standards.

I am running too long for a comment so I am going to make a Part 2 to the reply :D
