Writing Challenge: Root Words

Root Word ~ phon: voice, sound

Struggling to be a good phonetics student

What makes me to move ahead in the process of learning a second language is the possibility of not only speak it, but also speak it phonetically correct.

That's why I'm giving more importance to the English phonetics through the  study of IPA chart sounds for some time now.

It's like I wanted to have all the phonemes highlighted to the maximum in my voice when talking to other persons.

This way, I intend to get rid of cacophony when vocalising the language, sounding more natural, attractive and euphonious for those who listen to me.

I consider as one of the hardest points of English phonetics, the issue of homophone words, because just context will make clear to the person you are talking to, the accurate word you're using  that moment, since these words have exactly the same sound, but different meanings.

Some of  the opportunities to check out your speaking is doing well are for example: phone calls with your best friend and short introductions in lectures by microphone. If you are an outgoing and a bit crazy person you can even use a megaphone to test your perform in phonetics, as long as you moderate the volume when using it. LOL!

The truth is that, if you will able to develop a harmonious symphony of  the English sounds in your voice, you will surely be make understood whatever be your audience.

Here's a link for a video about a brief introduction on the English phonics by Mr. Thorne that I really enjoy to use in my daily practice:

Writing Prompt ~ Sometimes, Sometime, Some Time

I sometimes enjoy to put my voice in action to check my English skills out in proof. I hope to be able to change my "lazy" to speak in my learning daily in quite some time. Because knowledge without  practice is valueless. Sometimes, I find some learners that have too much grammar background but nothing related to speaking experiences in the target language. So, if you have some time to speak in English, I'd say: SPEAK! It's really important to do this activity quite often. And sometime in the future you'll notice that effort was completely worth!

Listen to News: Meteor Explodes Over Russia ~ 19 February 2013

Discussion Question: Scientists believe that this type of event happens about once every 100 years. Does a rare ocurrence like this justify the building of early warning systems from space?

Any way of preventing major damages to us is always welcome in advance, mainly when it comes to the catastrophic results of big asteroids over the Earth's surface seen  in the example of the one that crossed the Russian sky in February this year letting a bunch of injured inhabitants  that part of planet.

Although the asteroid that fallen out in Russia cannot be related to the other one that passed extremely close from the Earth's crost, I think the space is like a mathematic probability, we will always have  a tiny probability to be reached any time everywhere by "monster asteroids", so, the best to do is we protect ourselves through the most modern technological methods at hand,  before we can be caught by surprise.

As far as I know, the prevention against celestial corps at potential risk to damage our planet  is already made and monitored by the Nasa's scientists.

The science is for the man uses it  to prevent disastrous consequences , I really believe in a science that works on for us in a complete preventive way.

Interesting Facts In Easy English: The Spanish Flu Did Not Originate In Spain

Discussion Question: Do you think a pandemic of this size will happen again? If yes, how will it be different? If no, why not?

For certain, we'll have another pandemic in the future, once the viruses are always in often evolution whereas the science is a step behind , trying to beat them.

I believe the difference in the next generation of viruses that we will face hereafter are the dimensions and seriousness.

Maybe, the chicken flu can be a bottom line for a massive planetary disease, because the disease is not completely ruled out by scientific community yet, and the causing agent is strenghtening more and more, as we see in TV news .

Adding to that, we are living in the globalisation era, which facilitates the dissemination of any disease very fast. Just a simple tourist that leaves from one spot to another, and soon, we could have a worlwide scale contamination  starting.

I think the most dangerous factors for a new pandemic it will be the speed of its spreading, because of the quantity of peoples and their unstoppable fluxes in a context of global economy.

Interesting Facts in Easy English: Race Car Is A Palindrome

Discussion Question: Which do you prefer, playing with numbers and numerical puzzles, or playing with letters and words? Give some reasons for your preference.

Definitely, numbers and numerical games don't take part in my personal taste, although I consider them very important for all humankind. Imagine if we don't have a solid numerical system these days.  As society, we'd be in trouble, I suppose it was a complete shuffle in our economy, for instance.

The point is I really prefer to play with letters and words. Maybe partly, because I am currently studying a second language, and that makes me to have strong feeling for words and their letters, but, without looking down on numbers, in the bottom, I believe letters and words are one of the most sucessful achievements since the earliest times of mankind.

After all, letters and therefore words allow us to comunicate with other persons, conveying automatically our feelings, sensations, ideas, skills and whatever comes to our mind that certain instant you start puting your brain to reason. Words are essential to us understand what people say  and to make understood by others.

I think games which involve letters and words can even help us out to boost our taste for learning a second language. I myself, oftentimes, use language  games in my daily learning. By the way, there are so much of them all over the Web. One of the types of games that I like the most are the  vocabulary games. They are simply pure entertainment, making you relax amid a hard study routine.

So, these are my thoughts about the impotance of letters and words , they are the  fundamental base for everyone develop any other activity, even the simpliest human reckoning, because without  language, there aren't  communication, without communication there's no understanding among human beings.

Writing Prompts: Capital I

Writing Prompts ~ Capital I

As every commited language learner I really love the wonderful language learning world,  especially the world of the English language. One of the hardest "problems" that I face in my personal learning is the issue of the correct usage of  definite article "THE". I know it can be a silly thing, primary thing, thing that almost all beginner learner has already  in mind  long time, but, the truth is that in fact, I also  have problems with this three-letter small word when using it in my English texts so far. The biggest difficulty with this grammatical aspect is there are  much usages for this little article in the English grammar what makes me to think so much before to put a simple article like this in a sentence. But, I think I have  made some progress since I have started devoting myself to an accurate reading of the usages through some contextualised example  sentences. Contexts are a very helpful way to make somebody to remind better some English subjects. I intend to get better my understanding regarding definite article "THE" writing it along my texts as much as possible.

Listen To News: YouTube Holds Inaugural Music Awards ~ 05 November 2013

Discussion Question: How has YouTube revolutionised the music industry?

I consider YouTube one of the most fascinating tools of the Internet era. Through it, I can learn, study, teach, sing, listen, in the end, express me in thousands of  different ways. It's an amazing platform for who knows how to use it properly, didactically I'd say too.

I feel that YouTube has revolutionised the music industy mainly for the new generations of musicians, as well as, for everybody that has interest in adhering to it in the 21 st century world unavoidable conjuncture.

Most of new bands and singers today, use it to release some of their debut singles or  cd's  in a live and unpublished way.

If you have always been connected to the music atmosphere and don't have so much money, time and that long-awaited opportunity to release your work making persons know it, just you have a YouTube account and probably you can get well-known, sign a contract with a wealthy record label , reaching some of the most respectful top hits parades all over the world. That's exactly what happens with some of the new artists we see highlighted  in the current media.

Maybe, due to this new music perspective, with the advent of the digital releases of musics (singles), cd's and dvd's we can even starting thinking about about the vanishing of artistic materials as we know it today, physical stuffs, becoming to be a pure virtual content in a future not so far from the present days.

Today, you can sing whatever you want, the way you want, in the language you want, in the time you want, exporting all this production to  many nations as diverse as you can imagine  the Earth's surface can has, by just posting a sample recording of your sound on YouTube without necessarily have financial support or a record label behind you.

These days, the main characters of the music industry, the singers, are totally tied to powerful record labels any more, as they were untill a short time ago. The musicians have a  larger decision field on their own productions, for instance, choosing what soundtrack they will first release  online, through their social networks accounts in oder to draw more attention of the target audience to their debut albums.

So, YouTube has given liberty to the music scenario actors ( musics, producers, bands) as well as shaping a revolution in the way musical content is vehicled to all of us. In fact,Youtube came to make the transition from the old way of production  to a new and free way of concepting music.

Writing Prompt: Nosy Neighbour

Writing Prompt ~ Nosy Neighbour

Hardly ever my neighbours are at home. They always go out at weekdays,  I suppose to work on. I see they ask their friends out  to go to their homes seldom. When there are kids in the neighbour's houses they often are screaming in some cheerful  birthday. Infrequently, they play at the garden or at the sidewalk, maybe its parents have fear something bad to happen with them if they are out of the parent's houses security. Ocasionally, the parents stop doing what they are doing to play gladly with their children . The parties or birthdays in my neighbourhood  constantly finish in an early time, because there are rules to not disturb the elderly persons that live at my street. My neighbours say hello to me very rarely.

Note: Comments, suggestions and mainly corrections are wished so that I can check my perform out that activity. Thank you all for taking your time for this!

Writing Prompt ~ Phrasal Verbs With "Hand"

Last week I attended an amazing show with my bosom friends at Electric Ballroom in London. How some of them didn't have enough time to buy the tickects due to their hard weekly workday, I handed on their tickects online, from my personal computer at the show eve's night. They had just the easy work to print the vouchers to be able to get in the show's venue. But Mike, a cool friend of mine, arrived late at the entrance of the show and lost the chance to  have fun with us this time, of course, I have to hand over the value corresponding to his ticket after the show. John, Alfred, Mathias and me had a blast a lot in this show! Undoubtedly, it was one of the funniest moments I have ever had  in the company of my dear friends. In the show, was handed around besides soft drinks, lots of  tasteful  sandwiches, pizzas, hot dogs, fries and ice cream. I think my personal taste for lively parties surrounded by good friendships was handed down by my mother that also likes to make parties with her friends at home. The singer band at the end of the show handed out for the first fifty fans, a band's poster more one  cd and dvd signed set. I also asked a poster and a cd to the band frontman  in order to hand on to Mike how nice the musics played in the show were, since  he didn't have the opportunity to check them out closely. When leaving from the club all of my friends, as well as, all goers  that were place had to hand the tickects in at the show house entrance. So, this way, we were going out there handing our tickects back in the ticket office.

Note: Dear friends, comments, suggestions and corrections are always welcomed here, so that I can get better my effective writing skills. Thank you all!

Interesting Facts in Easy English: Bats Aren't Blind

Discussion Question: Only a small amount of people are bitten by bats each year, while thousands of people are bitten by dogs. Why are so many people terrified of bats?

I think the responsible for such big fear  is undoubtedly the film industry. Even though, most of bittens are caused by dogs, the "bad reputation" of bats is  so ingrained among humans due to the strong anti-bat advertisements made by the film world along years.

Most of us, consider bats, awful, bloodthirsty creatures that flies tirelessly around us just to lick our precious blood through and through. But, definitely, this is not an absolute true about them. This is a mistaken view indeed! The species which feed on blood are a minority in the nature, although they really exist.

In films, we always see such creatures like evil creatures, pursuing undenfended preys, unsuspecting victims locked up in a haunted old castle where there are vampires, werewolves, zoombies and alike haunts hunting down them. I notice films don't make an accurate distinction among the several species of bats, leading the audience to believe blindly that all the species are potential killers.

Added to this, I think persons in general don't search for secure informations about bats before being frightened irrationally about anyone of them.

In fact, there are species which feed on insects, fruits, nectar, meat, fishes and other different types of meals. The  hematophagous species ( vampire-bat, white wing vampire bat and hairy legs vampire bat) have characteristics which distinguish them from the other ones: lock-shaped muzzle and lack of tail.

To add,  as mamals,  bats are likely to convey rabies or hydrophobia  for any living being that get in touch them, what becomes essential to us know more about bats for avoiding unpleasant happenings.

So, I think it's hight time we start to get informed about the bats, for not to get carried away for any mistaken related to them.

Note:  I'd be grateful  you correct, suggest or comment my text in order to improve my skills. Thank you all, readers that take part here!

Listen To News: Last Bullfight In Catalonia ~ 27 September 2011

Discussion Question: Despite the 180,000 signatures from people who call bullfighting cruel, one fan compared closing the Barcelona arena to "throwing a Picasso painting into garbage". What do you think about this comparison?

The Barcelona Arena and the bullfighting practice can even  be a Picasso painting in the fan's opinion, that is,  so important  cultural figures for the Spanish identity but the bullfighting certainly is not in my view. Bullfighting is clearly a maltreatment against  the animals that used to be used to promote it.

This fan comparison is an unhappy comparison, since, it considers the culture more important than the animal's lives sacrificed that event every year. As far as I know, in  festivals like this, where people run away from an angry bull, the violent behaviour of animals is due to strings which tie up them perversely, making the animals feeling unpleasant and angry with anyone who crosses its viewfield that very instant.

Beyond this, the red colour showed up by bullfighters it's just a reason or motive to let the animal more unsatisfied before that uncomfortable situation.

The Spanish people should see the issue of Barcelona Arena closing not just like a loss for the country's culture, but, an opportunity to think over its concepts about the animal rights to not be  mistreated in a cruel way, as they are in Spanish bullfights. We know at the end of most of that bullfights , the bulls are very impaired or dead, because of the wood stakes released by goers in them.

For me, bullfighting is an event which should be just remembered for us as a fallen cultural reference, in no way reproduced, otherwise we'll be contributing to an everlasting circuit of disrespect to the animal's right  to life.

Beyond that, Spain is a country which has much more to offer in terms of culture than bullfighting. Just to look back for all the Spanish Middle Ages history for proving that. There are so many castles, kings, queens and remarkable historical events that make this country a true source of history, culture and admiration for all mankind. After all, it was Colombo  that led from Spain in 1492 to come to the American continent, one of the most advanced events for the world that time.

Listen To News: Mexico Considers Soda Pop Tax ~ 29 October 2013

Discussion Question: Is taxing unhealthy food or substances a good way to improve the health of citizens? Why or why not?

In fact, the issue of consumption of  junk foods and unhealthy beverages is a serious problem today, and in my opinion some immediate provides should be taken. Increasingly, we see all over the world, many of the disastrous consequences of the excessive consumption of "the global culture foods" like high rates of diabetes and childhood obesity . I see the taxing on unhealthy foods and substances, not just like a good health policy to be taken by worldwide governments, but a bottom line to bring other public measures out.

I  think from the increase of taxes, mainly on soft drinks, we could kick off  a reeducation plan about "over-consumption" of these beverages and other products, showing up its risks and consequences for a healthy life to the population at potential risk. The rise of taxes would be just a starting point for future health improvements in our societies.

Of course, we'd have so many demonstrators against this measure, but it's always impossible to please most of people. In a polemic question like this, undoubtedly, we'll always have two opposite sides, but, anyway, I believe we should think of the menaced survive of the vast majority of population that currently face this epidemic.

Taxing doesn't mean to remove the liberty of everybody to buy the same unhealthy foods that used to buy, but, means to put the consumer in a position of evaluating the risks  and consequences of its choices for its physical welfare, deciding if it's worth going on with the old harmful eating habits.

That is, taxing makes consumers think over its own health, starting a process of awareness in its minds. At least, that's what I hope to happen, according to my assumptions.

The elevation on the unhealthy food and substances taxing, it would be a foothold to start public health programs for reducing the diabetics and obese rates in several countries as well as forming a new mentality about the problem in affected populations.

Note: Leave me your comments, suggestions and corrections so that I can know I'm going ahead in English. Thank you all of you that takes part in my post!

Writing Prompt: So and Such

Writing Prompt ~ So and Such

Such a nice day

It was such an incredible travel, the last week journey to Australia! There, I could see nearly the most known australian symbols:  the kangaroos. They were confined in  such a large area inside the Sydney's zoo where they had complete acess to several of the best types of green leaves and vegetables.  I confess, at first, I  faced kangaroos like such  angry creatures that I'd  dare to come near them in no way!    But, I  could prove in reality they aren't like this. The zoo's kangaroos were so gentle, that I could feed them with my own hands without any fear or distrust about that. From my experience I conclude, any animal, whatever wild it is, it can become  so pleasant and so reliable for living together with humans if they're treated in a nice way. I've never imagined kangaroos were such  nice creatures when dealing with them so affectionately.

Listen To News: Polio Outbreak Feared in Syria - 22 October 2013

Discussion Question: A director from WHO referred to the "duck test" in a response about this possible outbreak. Why would he use this expression, and what do you think he meant by it? (The duck test expression goes as follows: "If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck.")

I suppose this director has intended to say  the polio case in Syria is a real situation, proven fact, only take into account the shown case details. Given that  "duck test" is a expression used to identify a unknown matter by just observing its common characteristics, the WHO director surely has wanted to claim the suspected cases of polio allied to the current situation over there, are  strong evidences of a real outbreak of the disease.

His comment bases on the  context of the country, that is to say, a war period, with poor sanitation conditions, escape of the health care teams and overcrowding of some regions that led to conclude the situation is noticeably real .

The arguments presented in the report are underlying facts to have an outbreak of that disease, because wartime, poor sanitary conditions, overcrowding and lack of health assistance when blended, can probably led an outbreaks like this, in any part of the world.

I would say the director was simply skillful when quoting "duck  test" in his response, because he only joined the "pieces of the puzzle" to come an opinion about the case.

I hope the medical assistance comes as fast as can in the neediest syrian regions, because there are inocent lives awaiting it for just have a chance of healthy life amid so terrible war scene that Syria is facing nowadays.

Note: If you want, leave me your comment, suggestion or correction to improve my English.  Thanks a million!

Listen To News: Tokyo To Host 2020 Olympics Games -  10 September 2013

Discussion Question: While people in Tokyo are overjoyed by the news, many Japanese residents who have been displaced by the Fukushima nuclear disaster think Japan's money and effort should be spent on the tsunami damage. What are your thoughts  on this argument?

Great question to think over.  The tsunami-shaped massacre whereby Japan population went through in March 2011 is not forgotten in our minds yet. It was a  unpredictably horrible event that has left deep marks not only in Japanese society but also in the minds who  feels compassion for the human life in general.

Thinking about Japan as a developed power becomes easier to consider it  an able country to host the Olympics Games in 2020. Maybe, we can think in a capitalist view : "Japan is a big economy,  where there are so much money, therefore they have all the ability and concern to overcome any kind of hurdle, even leave in the background the harmed population of Fukushima or deny the nuclear radiation effects also active in that region  in order to bring to the country a gratifying  large-sized event like the Olympics Games. After all, the Japaneses are determined in all what they do."

On the other hand, I strongly believe, if a country don't go very well  in education, health, dwelling, security, politics and other areas, for sure, there's no point in bringing any leisure event to country.   Look at Brazil, for instance. Brazil that is going through serious social, economic and politic disturbances long time: mainly after the accept to host  the 2016 Olympics Games and 2014 World Cup is turning  into a demonstration field for better living conditions. That shows us exactly the opposite scenario that everybody wants to see amid important sporting proposals. Most of us expect to contemplate a happy, overjoyed country in whole at that time.

Given that, we can't be seeing amid such  a great notice of sporting event hosting, how  the Olympics games hosting notice is,  a sad, insurgent society demanding its basic rights like the dignity of having acess to  health, educational, politic services or whatever be relegated by autorities.

For me, Japan is surely a superb place  for worldwide events, but the present and future conditions in Fukushima are to give priority effective assistance to the displaced inhabitants of the contaminated area and put in practice   governamental policies so that  the affected population and environment can be seen detoxified from the powerful effects of the atomic radiation.

First and foremost, Japan has to care about the nuclear incident consequences after thinking to host any event. Emphasizing: first, security, just after leisure activities for the  society. Human  welfare is imcomparable to any big proposal of  sporting event.

The IOC ( International Olympic Committee) in charge of choosing the future places to host the Olympics games should taken into account  more severe criteria when pointing out Japan, such as the possibility of  impacts of radiation on the public that will atend the games what  could lead to a "global contamination" maybe.      Particulary, my personal choice would have been Spain. Spain exercises a strong influence in young boys to become  reknowed footballers in the future, mainly due to the Real Madrid worlwide football stars like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo among others.  But a responsible option must consider other relevant aspects besides that, like security,  capacity to receive nicely tourists and so on.

Japan is needing, more than never, a time to deal with the idea of support for the Fukushima  damaged human lives and environment and security for all the foreigners that visit this wonderful country every year.

Note: If you want, correct, suggest  or comment my text so that I can progress my writing in English. Thank you everyone  for your attention! Cheers!!

Writing Prompt - Listen Up

I was so excited when  hearing the electropop English band Fenech Soler was coming to my hometown on a television advertisement. I listen to the Fenech Soler's sound for the first time on a internet radio last year. The band released the debut album in 2006 and comes from Kings Cliffe, Northamptonshire  in England. It consists of four members namely: Ross Duffy, Ben Duffy, Daniel Fenech-Soler  (whose name entitles the band) and Andrew Lindsay. The sound of the band blends synthpop, indie pop, and indietronica influences, that's why I cannot go without listening the Fenech's songs at least one time a week. If you want to hear  Fenech Soler live show, then you have to get the tickets in 3 months in advance because the shows are most of time fully crowded. Recently, on September 8th 2013 the band played a live show at the Electric Ballroom in London. The friends of mine that heard this show told me about the amazing songs the band played along the perform , including one of the most recent tracks of them: "All I know"! How I was on duty on the show's day, I'll try to listen to it in the band's channel on Youtube. If you have never heard about this band, it's worth listening to the song called "Magnectic" from the second album "Rituals" out now on September 30th of the current year.

Discussion Question: Do you think these types  of man-made barriers will protect the Netherlands from future storm surges resulting from global warming?

Looking at the question in a positive mood, I believe the human technology is evolving everyday. On this side, I think whilst the technology improvement human ability is in progress to overcome the incredible strenghts nature has, men  has the power in its hands to control the natural effects provoked by own devastation.

Being more practical,  I believe the human abilities cannot always beat the nature forces, because they are bigger and stronger, in the end, they are superior forces, the forces of our  creation that no living being has never been able to face up to sucesfully so far.

This way, men cannot always protect the Netherlands from future storm surges, because they are unstoppable strenghts, and any technology device that is invented  to fight against them is subject to flaws.

In my humble opinion, men can even  try to create devices to hold back momentarily the forces of storm surges but, at the end, they  will always win this battle, because they are trying to rebalance the Earth's natural environment destabilized by humankind due to so much valueless economic progress just  on behalf of wilder profit.

Earth has its own means for keeeping the planet in healthy conditions, this include storms, floods, dries and extreme colds that we see these days in the worlwide newspapers  . It's more important men understands why the planet is suffering with so many natural disasters raising awareness to the crucial role of preservation  instead of trying to hold back vainly its devastating reactions.

Definitely, men doesn't has all the power to rule forevermore storm surges in the Netherlands, but it has a limited power because one day storm surges will surely take on its place, after all, these forces are just the result of our  inconsequent actions as humankind.

Writing Prompt - Raise Vs. Rise

I'm impressed how the government has raised the cost of life in some capital cities of my country. The transport cost is rising! That way I am going to have to ask for a pay rise to get to I work. By the way, the company which I'm employed is really worried about the serious price rises that have affected the local economy. What causes the company in its turn also raises the prices of its products on the market. Even though all that crisis, the company is at the same time raising funds to contribute with the extermination of famine and poorness in some regions of the world. Everyday, I have to rise to go to my work at 6 AM, from Monday to Friday. There, I stay until most of time 8 PM.  But, yesterday I rose a bit later, 8:30 AM, and because of that I was told off by my  boss Andrew. Last year,  my job's colleagues join together for asking for  Andrew, our general director of company a pay rise, due to the Saturday's overwork. The employers claimed to receive at least fifty percent of their normal pays in extra journeys of work. At the end, boss and his employers reached an agreement of thirty percent of rise on our normal value of salary for the extra work . Nowadays, with so much tax's raises made by current government my salary is needing to be raised again, as well as, the salary of my work colleagues.

Writing Prompt - Going To

Hi  Richard, It's Sunday and I just arrived at the Moscow Domodedovo Airport .  I will seek for a hotel to check me in after  I write this postcard for you. Right now the sky  is completely cloudy here. The temperature  revolves around 0° Celsius. Tomorrow is going to be a cold and snowy day and It's going to be like this until Friday according to the weather forecast. By the way, when going out the streets I am going to need to wear scarfs, coats  and leather boots. I'm so glad for that, after all, I have been to Russia in my holidays  to feel and see the famous "russian cold". Also tomorrow, I am going to know Red Square, one of the most emblematic touristic points for who arrives to this city besides other gorgeous monuments that tell us a little bit about Russian history. Thursday, I am going to take a train to know the second biggest city of Russia: Saint Petersburg. The city  worked as the official capital city of the Russian Empire for about two hundred years between 1723 and 1728. By curiosity it was established by tsar , Pedro, The Great. I am going to stay in Saint Petersburg until Friday morning. Lastly, on Friday afternoon I am going to come back to my wondrous hometown Paris.

 From your dear friend,
