Do Less and Accomplish More

My diary

Which one improvement can I make to impact my English studies the most? My answer is writing and my reasons come as follows:

1- Almost most universities and companies in Canada test writing ability. It is not important if you have PhD or you are a doctor, an engineer, a lawyer, etc, you must pass the writing test relatively well.

2-Writing is a good way to review all new vocabularies. To write well, I have to know many vocabularies. Making a list of all new words and using them in a sentence is somehow useful. But, it does not guarantee to memorize them very well. Moreover, if not used, words would be forgotten. So, to recall new words, I have to use them as much as I can and this is not done without writing. As said, “Use it or lose it.”

3-Writing in English is not as boring as making a list of vocabularies with a sentence using the new words. After a while, your flash cards would be piled up and you do not even know how to organize them. But, by writing on the Microsoft word, you can use less paper and have enough space to keep them organized. More importantly, when I write, I barely forget a word. And, when I speak English, words automatically jump into my head.

4-I have to read more. By reading, I review all the words that I just learned and learn more new vocabularies. According to linguistic experiments, a word should be used and seen as nearly as 20 times so that it remains in the long-term memory. Since, I see words in a context, I do not have to struggle to memorize them. I effortlessly keep them in my mind.

 5-Vocabularies help improve listening skill.

6-One good technique that helps to speak fluently is writing. Most English learners ask how they can improve their speaking skill. Writing and speaking is so alike. In writing, you write in the way you speak. The only difference is that you only change some informal words into formal ones. So, writing helps you improve your speaking ability. Interestingly enough, one practice for speaking section of TOEFL test is to first write down what you are going to speak and then, to read it out loud. When test takers have done this many times, they can record their voice and speak without looking at their written text. By doing so, they improve their speaking skill.

7-I have to think logically and to know English rules since the organization of writing has special order. Every word or sentence should be chosen carefully. I should spend most of my time on the organization of my writing, brainstorming and mapping than what I am going to write about. So, logical thinking is a great part of a good writing as well as having the good sense of grammar. I have had a good grammar basis but I learned grammar mostly by reading and writing.

8-I pay much more attention to the sentence structures while I read a text and try to use the same structure in my writing as well.

9-English learners read and speak more than they write. We can speak or read every day but we can barely find a chance to sit and write about a subject. Writing is not satisfying because the final result is childlike. Therefore, we give it up.

10- English learners should be more disciplined and organized to write. You can read your book, magazine and newspaper wherever you would like. But, to write, you should find a place, have a notebook or a computer, find a good and interesting topic, have enough knowledge or experience and finally, courage. So, it is a much more complicated task.

11- English learners should write as quickly as he/she can. Imagine you are working in a company or you are in a class, you do not have the extraordinary amount of time to write. You should think quickly and decide what you are going to write. So, writing for fun differs mostly from writing for professional and academic works.

12-To practice dictation, synonyms and antonyms, punctuation, writing is a good way.

13-English learners would like to be good at writing but, they do not take any action towards it. To be good at writing, we should practice writing.

In short, it is said that do less and accomplish more. By only focusing on writing, I improve other skills such as listening, speaking, reading, dictation, word forms, synonyms, grammars, etc. In addition to that, writing is the most difficult skill. Most English learners have problem in this area and most firms and universities pay much more attention to this part. Therefore, writing is so significant.

My Diary,
January 6th 2011
Thursday

I was always angry at people who give up easily criticizing them for not being so strong to achieve what they long for. Now, I think I became like those whom I criticized before. However, I would like to be stronger this year not being sorry for my past mistakes and not being worried for future. I would like to do my best at this moment to achieve my goals. As such, I have decided to write either a blog or a paragraph or even a sentence every day for about 15 minutes. The perfection of my writing is not significant. I just determined to write. I would call this year for myself, “The year of writing.” I will write to remind myself of what is necessary to do at this moment, to be in touch with my inner self, to think clearly, to learn more, to gather knowledge and to sum up, to grow.

To begin with, I would like to write about my good moment in dentist’s office. While I was waiting, I saw Reader’s Digest magazine, December 2010 issue. The title of “The benefits of doing good deeds” caught my attention. The article was talking about how our good acts can change people’s life as well as ours. People who are helped more likely help others. They may not give you rewards in return for your act, but they more probably give it forward. By doing good deeds, we create a positive attitude in others, ourselves and our environment generating coherence in the world.

In the end, the author mentioned some useful websites including actsofkindness.org, helpothers.org, doagooddeed.com and thegooddeedsorganisation.com for those who would like to make a change by doing a kind act. Some of these websites even have some ideas how to assist individuals. I hope this year be filled with good deeds and consequently, peace!

Be fun and free,

Nafis

“A New Earth; Awakening to Your Life's Purpose” is known as one of the best spiritual books of our time and was on Oprah Winfrey’s book club list. Later, I discovered online classes on Oprah’s website discussing about the book by its author, Ekhart Tolle. You can watch or listen to the videos or mp3s here if interested, http://www.oprah.com/oprahsbookclub/A-New-Earth-Syllabus. The book and the videos both are summarized as follows, hoping that you like it.

The book of “A New Earth; Awakening to Your Life's Purpose” consists of ten chapters. In first chapter, Ekhart Tolle talks about the purpose of the book stating that it can be totally useful or meaningless for whom to read it. It will be useful if at the end, you are peaceful. He mentions," The ideas and concepts presented here [in the book] may be important. But, they are secondary. They are no more than signposts pointing toward awakening. As you read, a shift takes place within you. The book’s main purpose is not to add new information or beliefs in your mind or try to convince you of anything, but to bring about a shift in your consciousness.” However, the book can be meaningless if one is not ready spiritually.

In chapter two, he describes current state of humanity, that is, Ego. Ego has various names such as “self”, “Voice in the head”, “Little me” and thoughts. Ego takes control of the mind whenever it complains, compares, grieves, refuses to accept reality, intents to be right and to make others wrong, takes everything personally and feels superior or inferior. In the video interviews, Mr.Tolle emphasizes that when “The voice in the head” complains; it is not our true self which complains. In fact, we are consciousness behind the voice. So, there are “I” and “self”.

He then refers to his own life story when he recognized this separation between “I” and “self”. He was about to commit a suicide that he whispered to himself,” I am tired of myself.” Who is “self” that he is tired of? Is he two persons in one body? Who is that person? Then, the separation between “I” and “Self” occurs and “Consciousness” comes afterwards and brings extraordinary amount of peace. The day after that awakening is a new day and a new beginning. He enjoys a songful bird in a tree in front of his home that he had never realized its presence before. He was so drowned in his own thoughts that he could never realize the beauty of the sound.

In the Oprah’s interview, Mr.Tolle shows a way to manage the voice in the head stating that whenever it comes, do not pay attention to it. “If you resist ego, it will persist”, he emphasizes. Just let it be there as it is. This way, you are the awareness behind it and as awareness comes in, unawareness goes away.

In chapter three and four, he describes more about ego and gives more examples of its various faces. In chapter five, emotional side of ego is described. Ego has another dimension which is emotion or “Pain body.” Fear, anger, anxiety, jealousy, envy, etc, are different faces of the pain body.

Because the body is intelligent, it reacts to the thoughts and therefore, emotion is a response to the mind. In fact, ego plays a game with us. It starts telling a story which body believes in. Then, body reacts to it. The reaction feeds energy back to the thought making more emotional thinking and emotional story-making. Ego also feeds on the past and future for its existence. To clarify, Ekhart Tolle uses an example of two ducks that fights with each other in a pond of a park where he went to take a rest. After fighting, the two ducks just flapped their wings in order to let the negative energy go. Then, they floated off in the opposite direction and forgot completely about what had happened in the past. What it would be if they had a human mind? “I won’t believe what he just did. He thinks he owns this pond. He has no consideration for my private space. I’ll never trust him again. Next time, he’ll try something else just to annoy me. I’ll teach him a lesson he won’t forget.” (Page 87)

The answer to how we can control the pain body is hidden in chapter sex. The most significant thing to do in order to reduce pain body impact on the mind is to realize first we have a pain body, and then, to be present enough to recognize it. By only being present, we can identify pain body. This identification results in separating our true self from pain body and as soon as this separation occurs, pain body is unable to overcome.

But, the most important question is that how we can be present. In the video, Ekhart Tolle describes three ways to live at the present moment. First, just look around without judging. He emphasizes that it is better to look at the nature rather than a manmade object because the manmade object brings more thoughts to the mind. For example, just look at a tree without judging so that you can feel its presence. Look at its leaves, the color of the leaves, how it bends over when the wind blows and so on. Second, in daily activities, focus on what you are doing. If you wash your hands, try to feel the warmth of the water, the sound of the water, how water flows into your hands, how you feel when the warm water touches your skin and so on. Third, concentrate on your breath. Breathe deeply, release it slowly and watch it when you inhale and exhale. These methods help us to divert our thoughts from the mind and to live at the present moment.

In chapter seven, the author brings attention to one of the most important questions of our life; who are you really? Are you your name, your occupation, your personal history, your shape of your body and whatever is identified with ego? Knowing oneself is not concerned with ideas and thoughts in the mind. Instead, it is in “Being.” We are human being rather than human doing. And, only by Being, we can find consciousness which lies within.

Inner space is discussed in chapter eight indicating that this physical body is just an illusion. With the help of science, we are now able to see inside a cell which is made of atoms. And, deep beneath each atom, there is a space. In other words, our body consists of the space beneath the atoms. Thus, we are that space, and because the space cannot be manifested and tangible without the body, we have a body. Therefore, the universe expresses itself through us in order to be manifested, the author states in the video interview with Oprah. Moreover, by isolating the ego and knowing that we are not the ego, we create a space between ego and consciousness. And, this gap creates awakening.

Chapter nine and ten discuss about inner and outer purpose of life emphasizing that inner purpose is primary and outer purpose is secondary. The inner purpose of life is to be awakened which we all share on the planet because it is the purpose of humankind. However, the outer purpose is changeable over time.

Moreover, to be fulfilled, it is necessary to be in alignment with the inner purpose. If not, we will cause suffering for ourselves and others. So, awakening is when outer and inner purpose is aligned with each other, which is possible by “awakening doing.” Awakening doing has three modalities including acceptance, enjoyment and enthusiasm. When these three modalities are not present in what we are doing, we suffer. For example, imagine a bank clerk whose job does not satisfy him. It means that he does not accept his job situation. Therefore, he does not work compassionately; he complains all the time and creates an unpleasant environment for himself, colleagues, clients and his family.

In the end, the book has promising news. By being awakened, we build a new earth. The new earth is not a utopia. The new earth comes when external world is in accordance with the internal world and when we are egoless, in the surrendered state, in oneness with ourselves, others, the whole universe and God. So, this awakened individual can change everything on the earth because outer life is not inseparable of the consciousness within. And, it mentions it is already happening, “A new species is arising on the planet, it is arising now and you are it.” (Page 187)

Audio Challenge 1: A song of the Road

A Song of the RoadTHE GAUGER walked with willing foot,And aye the gauger played the flute; And what should Master Gauger playBut Over the hills and far away?Whene’er I buckle on my packAnd foot it gaily in the track,O pleasant gauger, long since dead,I hear you fluting on ahead. You go with me the self-same way—The self-same air for me you play; For I do think and so do youIt is the tune to travel to.For who would gravely set his faceTo go to this or t’other place? There’s nothing under heav’n so blueThat’s fairly worth the travelling to.On every hand the roads begin,And people walk with zeal therein; But wheresoe’r the highways tend,Be sure there’s nothing at the end. Then follow you, wherever hieThe travelling mountains of the sky.Or let the streams in civil modeDirect your choice upon a road; For one and all, or high or low,Will lead you where you wish to go;And one and all go night and dayOver the hills and far away!

Learning English has been one of the most difficult tasks I have ever done in my life. What makes it so challenging is you have to be persistent, self-motivated and self-disciplined. In my opinion, persistence is the most important and vital factor for learning English because only by practicing, perfection can be acquired. And practicing is nothing than doing one task regularly until got it right. In addition to that, during my English studies, I either had some personal experiences or learned from various teachers how to learn English effectively which I indicate them as follows:1- Be persistent. If you are exhausted of making mistakes all the time, take a rest. Quitting cannot solve your problem. Just take a rest and refresh your mind. Do whatever you love and then come back to your studies. After all, you should have fun.2- To have positive attitude. Learning English is a long endless process, and learning is possible only if you have a positive attitude. Reminding yourself of the time you can write or speak very fluently brings back the positive energy to the mind. When I am disappointed, I have some special mantra such as “I am getting closer to my goal every day by doing small steps”, “Never ever give up”, “English is as easy or as difficult as I think”, “I do my best, mother nature will do the rest”, “Enjoy the learning process not thinking of the outcome.” This helps me to get back on the track and be motivated again.3- To have fun. If you have fun with what you are doing, you will never become disappointed or frustrated. The fun in English helps you to learn more effectively and be hungry to learn more. Then, learning English will be the joy of your life not a boring task to do every day. I like reading spiritual books. This not only helps me to learn vocabularies in the context but also helps me to learn about spirituality. In other words, you kill two birds with one stone. So, have fun with English.4-Learn everything deeply. I learned this from one of my English teacher and it was so effective for me. Choose one dialogue about the subject you like and listen to it as much as you can for about two weeks. This way you can learn vocabularies deeply without struggling to memorize them. Watch your favourite movies as much as you can. Sing along with your beloved songs. After a while, repeating results in deep learning of English. This enables you to use English words and sentences effortlessly in your daily life. As a result, you can communicate easily with people around you and the better you can communicate, the more you are passionate about learning. So, learn everything deeply.5-Think in English. Many English teachers say, “Think in English.” However, what does it mean really? It means that if you listen to English materials or read magazines and books, you will be familiarized with English structures and you can use them while speaking or writing. This means “Think in English.”6- The real secret is only to practice, practice and practice. Practice makes perfect. If you want to be fluent in speaking, speak or write as much as you can. You can apply the same method for reading and listening. The more you read and listen, the better you become.7-Less is much. Studying English for about 30 minutes every day is more effective than studying for three hours in one day. Listening to one conversation deeply may help you more than listening to many conversations without concentration and attention. So, do not overwhelm yourself with too much works rather studying less English materials but more deeply and effectively.Lastly, for me, learning English has not been limited only to learning rules and grammars. It changed my life in many different ways, for example, I had to overcome fear of making mistakes, fear of looking foolish, fear of not knowing and fear of exams. I had to work on my self-esteem and confidence. I have relatively acquired the knowledge of self-growth in addition to learning English itself. Now, I understand so well the meaning of this quote of Martin Buber who said, “All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware.”

I recieved the following article as an E-mail and according to my lovely friend's request, I put it here. Hope you enjoy reading it.We all think eating fruits means just buying fruits, cutting it and just popping it into our mouths. It's not as easy as you think. It's important to know how and when to eat. What is the correct way of eating fruits?IT MEANS NOT EATING FRUITS AFTER YOUR MEALS! * FRUITS SHOULD BE EATEN ON AN EMPTY STOMACHIf you eat fruit like that, it will play a major role to detoxify your system, supplying you with a great deal of energy for weight loss and other life activities.FRUIT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FOOD.Let's say you eat two slices of bread and then a slice of fruit. The slice of fruit is ready to go straight through the stomach into the intestines, but it is prevented from doing so. In the meantime the whole meal rots and ferments and turns to acid. The minute the fruit comes into contact with the food in the stomach and digestive juices, the entire mass of food begins to spoil.... So please eat your fruits on an empty stomach or before your meals! You have heard people complaining — every time I eat watermelon I burp, when I eat durian my stomach bloats up, when I eat a banana I feel like running to the toilet, etc — actually all this will not arise if you eat the fruit on an empty stomach. The fruit mixes with the putrefying other food and produces gas and hence you will bloat.Graying hair, balding, nervous outburst, and dark circles under the eyes all these will NOT happen if you take fruits on an empty stomach. There is no such thing as some fruits, like orange and lemon are acidic, because all fruits become alkaline in our body, according to Dr. Herbert Shelton who did research on this matter. If you have mastered the correct way of eating fruits, you have the secret of beauty, longevity, health, energy, happiness and normal weight. When you need to drink fruit juice - drink only fresh fruit juice, NOT from the cans.Don't even drink juice that has been heated up.Don't eat cooked fruits because you don't get the nutrients at all. You only get to taste.Cooking destroys all the vitaminsBut eating a whole fruit is better than drinking the juice. If you should drink the juice, drink it mouthful by mouthful slowly, because you must let it mix with your saliva before swallowing it. You can go on a 3-day fruit fast to cleanse your body. Just eat fruits and drink fruit juice throughout the 3 days and you will be surprised when your friends tell you how radiant you look.KIWI: Tiny but mighty. This is a good source of potassium, magnesium, vitamin E & fiber. Its vitamin C content is twice that of an orange.APPLE: An apple a day keeps the doctor away? Although an apple has a low vitamin C content, it has antioxidants & flavonoids which enhances the activity of vitamin C thereby helping to lower the risks of colon cancer, heart attack & stroke.STRAWBERRY: Protective Fruit. Strawberries have the highest total antioxidant power among major fruits & protect the body from cancer- causing, blood vessel-clogging free radicals.ORANGE : Sweetest medicine. Taking 2-4 oranges a day may help keep colds away, lower cholesterol, prevent & dissolve kidney stones as well as lessens the risk of colon cancer.WATERMELON: Coolest thirst quencher. Composed of 92% water, it is also packed with a giant dose of glutathione, which helps boost our immune system. They are also a key source of lycopene — the cancer fighting oxidant. Other nutrients found in watermelon are vitamin C & Potassium.PAPAYA: Top awards for vitamin C. They are the clear winners for their high vitamin C content.. It is rich in carotene; this is good for your eyes.Drinking Cold water after a meal = Cancer! Can u believe this?? It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion... Once this 'sludge' reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.Heart Attack:Women should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting. Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line. You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack. Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms. Sixty percent of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up. Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know the better chance we could survive.A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this mail sends it to 10 people, you can be sure that we'll save at least one life.Keep smiling!Nafis

After being on MyEC for almost one year, I have always seen this statement many times: “We should understand each other.” But, I have seen the usage of aggressive, misunderstanding and insulting words throughout comments or chat rooms. Therefore, I thought what we practically do to attain it? And what creates misunderstanding?According to Dr. Maxwell, the author of the book Relationship 101, the reasons to misunderstanding are fear, self-centeredness, failure to appreciate the differences and failure to appreciate similarities. One good way to prevent misunderstanding is to put ourselves into friends’ shoes. It means if we were them and had the same situation, what would we do?Another way is that not to think we are superior to others and what we do or think is the best. Instead, thinking that what we can learn from the differences. Everyone has something to give or teach us. So, it is good to make most of this opportunity. In addition to what mentioned above, some sentences are useful to be used in conversations. We can use “we” instead of “I”. We can use “Thank you” and “You did a good job” more. In discussions, “I want to understand you better” or “what is your opinion” are very helpful.People eagerly look for peace in the world and ask how they can bring it into the world. Peace is nothing but living in harmony with others and this can come to exist with understanding each other. If we do not practice how to understand each other in a small community, MyEC, how do we expect to bring peace into the world?I am so sure there are a lot of techniques that we can apply to our daily life to understand others. If you have any idea, please share it. I very much appreciate your help and kindness.Have a lovely day,Nafis

Today, what most honoured is to acknowledge the women who work outside home. I do not want to degrade this but, I think the job that women do at home is as important as theirs. My mother has always taken care of my brother and I. I don’t remember if I have ever left alone at home. Even if she went somewhere, she would come back very soon so that we could eat at least dinner together. Fresh nourishing foods were cooked by my mom every day. Frozen packaged foods, ready meal or junk foods were banned in the kitchen. Not only she prepared everything for us but also the environment of our home was so relaxing and nurturing. She was always a good consultant and listener. New ideas didn’t make her angry. She was all day busy with reading, knitting, sewing and learning new things.”Always try to learn an art” or “The value of a woman or girl is not to have jewellery, beauty, wealth or even a good career, but it is to love and serve others. “were her famous slogans. I remember the first time that I told a lie. I was burned to the ashes by a bunch of black pepper on my tongue to remember forever that a lie can burn my life too. So, for all her sacrifices, I would like to say “Happy mother’s day” to my mother and all caring and attentive mothers around the world .I hope one day I can compensate what she has done for me.Love you mom,Nafis

Back On The Track!

After three years, finally, I could make it. Every morning, I wake up with this thought; To see my country again, to hug tightly my family members and relatives, walking in Iran, eating Iranian traditional ice cream, kebabs , breads, visiting the places that I had been before; the university, the streets, the cinemas, to see how they have changed. Now, that time has arrived and I am eagerly packing my bags but, I feel so strange. I am supposed to be more relaxed but, I neither can eat nor sleep. I am not focused at all. I like to recline somewhere and only dream about my trip. I wish these last hours would pass as fast as the speed of light. However, the thought of visiting Iran sends huge flow of blood into my mind pushing me to collect my stuffs as quickly as I can. When the universe has helped me to go back home, I do not want to leave my second home, Canada! I feel I am standing in the middle of a suspension bridge not knowing what I really desire. Now, I am missing Canada so much as if I won’t see my amazing friends and my home any more. This feeling became much stronger when a friend of mine said: “We will be waiting for you to get together again. Go and come back soon.” By these polarized feelings, I lastly decided to pack all my stuffs and get ready to go to Iran.At Toronto’s AirportThe flight is at 10:30 at night so I will be at the airport two hours in advance. Everything went smoothly at the airport. And, we managed to get board on time.On the planeIt is 10:30 when I always go to bed but, now I can’t sleep at all. Sweet dreams are flooding to my mind. I imagine what will happen when I see my parents and my brother again. When should I see my cousins? Where can we go? I was drowning into my thoughts that the flight hostess asked me what I would like to eat. I can hardly eat! However, the food package was so tempting that I accepted it thinking that the inside is so yummy too. I put them on the table in front of me and again got back to my sweet dreams. The same middle-aged blond flight attendant came once again asking this time about what I would like to drink. This question sounds like tough to me! Even drinking water is so difficult. I can’t even swallow water! All my throat muscles are numb and can rarely move. I ignored to have a glass of water. But, the flight hostess in the light blue suit with red scarf, insisted: “You will have a terrible headache, so drink this glass of water, please.”Again, I put it on the table calculating how many hours we should spend on the plane. By remembering what the pilot said, I laughed over and over: “Let’s fasten the seatbelts, otherwise, I will be mad at you guys and have to go to the hotel and we won’tttt fly! Reeeady?”So, I spent these five hours on listening to the musics, counting how many passengers are walking on the plane and how many are at sleep, laughing with the pilot about his funny announcements and finally, watching our route to Iran on the plane’s TV screen. Only one hour has left. And, these last moments are moving as slowly as a turtle. By entering to Iran’s border, my heart was beating as fast as a sparrow’s heart wishing the plane could go faster and faster. By taking a deep breath, I want to put Iran to my body. Now, we are in the north western part of Iran, Orumieyh. Next is Rasht. We are heading to Tehran, the capital of Iran. After one hour, we reached over Tehran. My heart is running this time. I can breathe with difficulty due to the excitement of seeing my family members. I feel the pressure of two strong big hands around my neck squeezing it. I need more oxygen. Through windows, sleepless Tehran was glowing at midnight. I could clearly see the movements of vehicles in that time which flood happy tears into my eyes.“Thanks a million time! God! Once again, I could visit my homeland! Thanks God! And, I am so sorry that I said this city is so polluted and populous. I took it back.”

This is Tehran from above taken by my lovely friend, SoniyaAt Tehran’s AirportThe wheels of the plane touched the ground like a mother who cuddles a baby. All praised the pilot’s landing skill. As soon as doors were opened, I jumped out and walked so fast. Terrible odour of pollution teases my nose. In addition to that, I do not know why I lost my patience in these last moments as if my feet are on the fire and I must jump every second. “Be calm, why are you in hurry?” said to myself.A formal army band welcomed us at the airport since teenager Taekwondo sport team achieved silver medal in Mexico’s competition and they were on our plane. So, the band is playing some famous Iranian songs. A deep breathe again...Despite not having enough sleep, I am so relaxed and even heavy traffic in transit area was not able to break my internal calmness as if I am walking along the beach and enjoying the view and the sound of the waves.I passed the custom easily and reached the baggage claiming area looking for my bags. I found one of them and put it on the card. I looked through the glassy window if I can see my parents and my brother. With a blink of an eye, I found them. “Ohhhhhhhh, heyyyyyyy! “, I cried out so loudly and hastily, I jumped to grab my bag.A short medium-height lady pointed to my red bag and said: “This is mine.”-“No, ma’am. This is mine. You should look at the baggage claiming area not at my card!”-“No, mine is red too. I am so sure this is mine.”, she insisted.-“Ma’am, I checked the barcode with my tag on the bag. Do you have your barcode?!”-“Ohhh, I am so sorry. I don’t“Shortly afterward, a long line for inspecting bags stopped proceeding again. “Oh, Godddddd!” I skilfully joined the winding line and passed the inspection area. In the end, after 30 minutes, we could manage to go out.

First day of arrival, I took this photo of downtown Tehran. The sweet moment I dreamed of beforeA week ago, my mother told me on the phone she bought all the ingredients for making my favourite dishes, deserts and jams. My father lost his patience and called me constantly to be sure if I packed my bags or not. He was filled with bliss as if he was drunk. My brother prepared Iranian movies and songs in order to watch and listen together. I hugged my parents and brother so tightly trying even the air cannot separate us. I didn’t want to lose them again. My parents had lost a lot of weight along with the deep wrinkles on their face. This put me into a deep sorrow but, I could see the sparkle of sheer delight through their eyes. My brother became taller and got his driving license. So, he gave us a drive to home. Home sweet home!

I Am Terribly Sorry!

I am terribly sorry for those who want to bring justice with injustice, love with cruelty, freedom with dictatorship, peace with fight and politeness with impoliteness. I wish we could understand the graceful gesture of a flower against the wind, the smoothness of water through a stone and self-givingness of sun to all creatures. All the best,Nafis

Thank You All for Understanding

Dear friends,

My contact list has been growing up and now, it is too big to be managed very well. To be organized, I have decided to delete some friends from my contact list. By doing so, I do not want to offened or insult anyone. It does not mean that I do not like my friends or do not care for them. I just want to be organized. I very much appreciate your understanding in advance.

When we travel, the first thing that we do is to look through the city brochure and find the museums. Have you ever thought why people visit museums? There are different reasons why people come to museums. In my view, not only they provide a rich source of data but also they are timesaving, perceivable and uplifting.

First of all, you gain comprehensive information and preserve the short time. Tourists usually have limited time to visit all sightseeing. And, since artefacts have been collected in only one area, it saves a lot of time going from one place to another as well as acquiring cultural, historical and political information. Today, most museums try to catch the audience through the cyber world. So, they usually design multi –media websites which includes pictures or videos of the museum’s objects and the exact time and date of the upcoming events or exhibits. As a result, before even visiting, the audience can determine if it suits his desire and need or not. Therefore, this is an efficient way to attain excessive information in a short period of time.

Another advantage is that the visit will be carved on the memory. Most museums try to nurture their audience by providing written text, different films, books and brochures. Visitors can read a brief explanation or even ask about the artefacts. So, it results not only in better understanding but also in better recalling. On the other hand, if you read a book, it may be so complicated and boring. But, museums utilize all the possibilities and media to make their point understandable and unforgettable. The laundry museum in Zanjan, Iran, is still crystal clear in my mind even after six years passed by. The anthropological museum had used mannequins dressed in Qajar era’s outfit and displayed them as if they are washing their clothes in the narrow canals. So, with the help of various media, learning process is profound and unforgettable.

Finally, museums are inspiring. Nowadays, we all busy with our own daily life in order to meet ends. So, museums give us the opportunity to be relaxed and enjoy the time. The special architectural design of the Art Gallery of Toronto, the easy listening music, the silence and the sheer beauty of the oil paintings make great atmosphere to evade from overwhelming life.

Briefly, if you are curious to visit a new sight, visiting a museum would be a great choice. They provide you with cultural and historical backdrop. So, you know more during a limited time and still have time to see many other places. And more importantly, the visit becomes one of your memorable time of your life.

Enjoy your time,

Nafis

While Gwyneth Paltrow was standing in line for the movie, she ran into Steven Spielberg. She immediately accepted Spielberg’s offer to play a brief role in one of his movies. This is the story of how Gwyneth Patrow stepped into movie industry and became a well-known figure. Thus, some people may think that Gwyneth Paltrow was so lucky that she saw one of the best American directors accidentally and succeeded. But, I totally disagree with it. Successful people have some special characteristics which others do not have them or do not pay attention to them. Love, specific goals, perseverance, etc lead them to accomplish their dreams.Love is driving force for success. Because of her passion for acting career, Gwyneth Paltrow dropped out of her university and studied acting for several years. In an interview with The Guardian, she told that she loves what she does. In other words, more concentration and carefulness are used as a result of enthusiasm. So, the task would probably be perfect and brings much more success. And, being succeeded motivates to work passionately. On the other side, people who claim that they are unlucky do not love what they are doing. For example, my colleague chose her job because her friend was studying the same field. Therefore, to compete with her friend, she studied sociology and inevitably worked in that area. Now, she is unsuccessful and an ignorant sociologist. Hence, love for the job is an essential factor to be succeeded.Setting a specific goal is another element. Successful people know what they want out of their life. So, they plan and work hard in order to achieve it. One the other hand, a person without any specific goal is like a ship lost at the sea and wind takes it everywhere. Goals are like compass showing the right direction. In addition to setting purpose, perseverance plays a major role. Richard Marx, American singer and musician, was rejected by most record companies in Los Angeles or “Rocky” script was discarded by many directors in Hollywood. But, it ended up winning ten Academy Awards. Most people give up when they face such situations and consequently, they interpret them as misfortune. But, successful people are like stamps. They stick to their goals until they get to the destination. In the end, I think the usage of the word luck is just an excuse to cover laziness. It is easy to give up rather than to work hard. I do not think that the failure of 100 attempts by Thomas Edison or rejection of Sylver Stallone’s script contribute to fortune. But, this shows how much they have been persistent, goal-oriented and passionate. This article is not grammatically correct so if you are interested, you can listen to the corrected audio version of the text. Winston Churchill never thought a man wearing a simple outfit and having a simple lifestyle could make India independent. He simply underestimated his rival due to first impression. He once addressed Ghandi, a poor half-naked person who was striding toward the Royal Palace. In addition, Adolf Hitler was quite short, but his ability in speech and having a charismatic character made him a powerful man. In Germany he still has some followers. These examples show how we can make false judgement by external appearance.Today, our judgement is formed by mass media. We are bombarded with a huge amount of advertisements on cosmetic products and outfits. We have the Miss World contest to determine who is beautiful and fit. TV programs such as “Fashion police” or “What not to wear” form our minds and ideas about a descent individual. But, in society everything is different. Criminal statistics present that most girls are sexually assaulted by handsome well-dressed men. Even though the exterior may somehow reflect personality, it cannot guarantee what is in one’s heart and mind. One may seem so elegant at first glance, but after getting to know him, he may exhibit unattractive personality traits. The opposite can be true in this case. Someone with ugly dress is thoughtful and caring. Thus, we should separate the images constructed by mass media from what we confront in reality.Secondly, true beauty is not aesthetically appealing to the eyes. Physical beauty fades away with age, sickness, accident, etc. Permanent beauty nourishes the soul. In other words, what matters most is how one has helped humanity. Mother Teresa is not internationally acclaimed for her physical attraction, but because of her humanitarian actions to the poor, the sick, the orphaned and the dying public. The magnitude of a man is determined according to who he really is and not according to what he has. So, real beauty is to own a great soul.Lastly, I remember a story. One day, Nasreddin went to a party while he put on ordinary cloths. At the party, no one talked with him and he sat close to the exit door. Next month, he was invited to the same party once again but, he put on excellent cloths and went there. This time, they warmly welcomed him and asked him to sit in a fine place in the room. Then, at dinner, he poured all the food into his sleeve and said: Cloth! Eat. Cloth! Eat. This story refers to how public respect of one another is done according to the external appearance while a man should be judged as a good human being no matter what he wears or has. I think external appearance is not a good factor to judge and see someone’s heart. It also fades away with time. So, we should judge people according to inner beauty.*I very much appreciate dear Bill for correcting my essay.I got the picture from here.

My Iranian artistic friend, Negar was attracted to painting since she was a child. She continued learning painting by herself and after finishing her education in the university, she started learning painting seriously and going to an oil painting class. If you go to her page, you can find her fantastic paintings which draw the viewer's attention. Here is my interview with Negar.1- "The only time I feel alive is when I'm painting." What do you think about this sentence, is it true or false?Yesss. When I am painting, I have a great feeling. I am alive. I am on the sky,on the rainbow with thoes nice colors.

2- There is a great black drawing of a landscape on your page. I would like to know first if you drew it or not. If so, why did you draw it in black?Yes, I draw it myself, and why I drew it by black color because I liked to improve my skill in this field. Painting just with one color and that’s black color and shows beauty in black color. You can see the sky, tree, river, stone in this painting. I clearly remember seven years ago when I came across "Seven secrets for ESL learners" on English Club. The information was so excellent and impressive that I wrote an Email to Mr.Josef Essberger, the founder of EC. Although my writing was not so good, he kindly read it and humbly responded. I could not imagine one day I can easily interview him, and as usual he accpetd my request right away and humbly responded. Here is the interview:

1-There is a photo on your page, the photo of the first computer that you used for EC, so how did you come up to create EC?

I had just discovered the Internet. I was teaching English in Paris at the time, and doing some translation work for a client who wanted to work through the Internet. So that forced me to learn about the world wide web, which in Europe was pretty new at the time. As soon as I saw the Internet, it kind of clicked in my mind that here was this fantastic new medium for the distribution of information and knowledge. I had no idea how it would develop. I don’t think anyone had at that time.

2-At the beginning was it easy to build EC? Was anybody supported you?

Ha! I had one thing going for me: I spoke and taught English. But I knew almost nothing about computers, and even less about the Internet. So the technical side was probably the most difficult. There was a lot to learn – about HTML, and then about various scripts like CGI and PHP. But that was fun and kept my brain active. As for support, no, but over the years we have built up a team of really creative individuals who help in developing EnglishClub in a variety of ways:

http://www.englishclub.com/about/team/

3-How many years has EC been built?

I started EnglishClub in 1997.

4-Did you think that you would have one of the best English websites? Because EC is on English as a Second Language best English website list.

I don’t know. I think it’s impossible to try to be “the best”. One should try to be good, or very good, or the best that one can be. If some people consider that to be among the best, then it is very gratifying. But we should always keep trying to improve, and ultimately to think of the user and the user’s needs.

5- Have you ever thought you shouldn't have created it?

NO!!! That idea has never occurred to me. Your question is the first time I have even thought about it. It’s a good question, though.

6-what does success means to you?

In general terms, I think that success means achieving a goal. Logically then, we cannot be successful if we do not have a goal. So having a goal is the first and most important thing. Without a goal, you cannot measure success.

7-How many members do you have already?

About 150,000 in total, but not all members participate in all parts of EnglishClub. For example, MyEnglishClub, which started less than a year ago, has just over 12,000 members. But when you take in newsletter subscribers, forum members, chat room members and so on you get something like 150,000. Those are really active members. It would be more but we are rigorous about cleaning out the database, and we don’t count for instance members whose newsletters bounce back to us because they’ve changed email address. In terms of visitors per month though, we have nearly 2 million. EnglishClub is free access and we don’t force people to join in order to see content.

8 - When you get a negative feedback from your members, how do you deal with it?

Very good question. And yes, we do of course get negative feedback at times. It’s sometimes difficult not to take criticism personally. I know that several forum moderators, who are volunteers and give their time freely, have once or twice been really hurt by “negative feedback”. But in reality we have to be grateful to anyone who writes in with criticism, as long as it’s serious and not abusive. Often they have a valid point and we do what we can to correct the issue as appropriate.

9-How do you feel when you see EC's name on the influential websites like EST as a TOEFL resource studying material?

Good. Very satisfied. I’d be lying if I said otherwise. But at the same time, I have to think of and thank all those people who have helped to put it there, and remember that it’s not automatically going to stay there!

10-Would you please describe one of your best memories of EC?

Seeing so much creativity coming from members. For example, first in the ESL Forums where members would create games for each other or write poems, and more lately in MyEnglishClub where members have come up with the most amazing ideas, writing, games, audio and so on. Something else that is very exciting is “The Learning English Video Project” that is currently in production.

11-Would you please describe one of your worst memories of EC?

I think two things, which are kind of related. One is just spam, or attempted fraud. Which unfortunately is a fact of life. It’s sad to think that people spend so much time and effort over something that is ultimately going to get them nowhere but causes so much trouble for others. The other is intolerance, the kind of thing that happens in chat rooms or forums, not just on EnglishClub, when people get abusive with each other without stopping and trying to see the other person’s point of view.

12-What messages do you have for those who have new ideas and want to take action making their dreams come true?

Believe in your dreams. It’s a little bit like the “goal” we were talking about earlier. And like the lyrics from “South Pacific”, that wonderful musical film that came out long before most EnglishClub members were born: “You gotta have a dream, if you don't have a dream, How you gonna have a dream come true?”

13- How did you learn Thai Language?
By taking some lessons, by using Thai with Thai people, by watching Thai TV. By learning to read and write Thai since it uses its own script.

14-Which topic did you like most when you were a student?
Art, English

15-Which topic didn't you like when you were a student?
Maths

16- What famous figures do you admire most?
Genghis Khan

17-what is your favorite color?
Grey

18- If you were born once again, what kind of job would you choose?
Doctor

Dear Josef, I very much appreciate for your kindness and taking your time in order to answer my questions.
