  • Dear teacher Tanya,

I really appreciate your effort. I've been viewing the questions of fellow members and your answer in this group and I found it very helpful. Thank you very much.

Today, I wish to have a question for you. I'm always confused in using some pair of words

    "will", "would"

    "since", "as"

    "don't you...?", "do you...?"

Could you please teach me about the exception of using those words?

I'm looking for your reply. Thanks in advance dear teacher.

    Best wish.

  • hi, Tanya! how is your day? i hope you're very well

  • Dear Bilmal! Sorry, it has taken me so long to answer yuor question.

Well, as I have already said, there are very many such words in English. I will give you a few more examples now.

Near. This word can be used as an adjective:

I usually go shopping to the nearest grocery.

    as an adverb:

The hour of sunset was near.

    as a preposition:

The grocery is near to my house.

    as a verb:

The ship was nearing to the land.

Use. We can use this vord as a verb in different meanings:

He does know how to use his brains.

They used the prisoners cruelly (treated).

I am used to getting up early (I have such a habit)

as a noun in different meanings:

He is excellent in the use of the French language.

He put the use of his house at my disposal.

    What's the use of arguing?

The painter followed the religious use and wont of his time.

I'd like to say that very many words can be used as nouns or verbs. This list will be endless.

Before is used as an adverb, a preposition or a conjunction:

I knew her from before (adverb)

He would die before lying (preposition)

Call me before you go (conjunction).

I can say the same about after and many other words.

Dear friend!Honestly, there is no reason to rewrite a dictionary here. If you have a good one, you can find such information there.

    Have a nice day!

  • Dear Alhagag! I think in that sentence it may may mean that

  • thanks so much Tanya for this great explenetion  as to 5 i think you're about built = lead i look for in Arabic dictionary  the same meaning  thanks more again

    have a good day!

  • Dear teacher Tanya,

    THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

I really want to collect some multi-words, which are frequently used in English language. Dear teacher, please let me know on how to find them with some examples. It means that multi-words could be used differently based on the parts of speech. Could you please explain this section with a little elaboration?

    Good Luck!

    Bimal

  • Dear Alhagag! I have just got an idea about item 5. If we are speaking about killer whales (shamoos, orcas) living in cold waters, that expression may mean that the whales creating an ecsort control or maintain the temperature of the water around a female and her calf giving off the warmth of their bodies. How do you like that?

  • Dear Alhagag! Let me continue my explanations on the base of your additional questions and information.

I hope you have got item one. If we add the first part to it, we will get a quite reasonable sentence:

    But perhaps the most important
characteristic of all lies (or is) in the strength
    of our family ties.

As to item 2 and 3. It is obvious that a grandmother kicks her granddauhgter in the rump (butt) to authorize (allow) the latter to scramble. As to the word "scramble", it has a few different meanings: to fight for something, to clamber (climb) up, to take off ( about planes or birds), to make disorder and, maybe some others. It depends on what animals we mean. It is for you to deside which meaning is more suitable.

Well, as to 5. The word "heat" also has many different meanings as well as "run". So, even with the additional information you gave me, I can't be sure in this sentence. Your original question was about "build to". So, it may mean "creates" or "leads to" or something like that. However, I can't understand what "heat run" means here.  The first meaning of this expression is "a heating test", i.e, a reaction of an object to this or that temperature . The word "heat" may  mean , excitement , fervour , ardour , animation , vehemence , eagerness , passion , rage, estrus (about animals) and many other things. Anyway "run" is movement. If they are whales, it means they may swim somewhereand so can the people who try to photograph or shoot whales. So, this sentence is not clear, yet.

"Ceremony" . In our everyday life this word means formal polite behavior and I believe it is used in this sense in your examples. At least, I feel that way. It may also mean a formal religious or public occasion, especially one celebrating a particular event, achievement, or anniversary or something like that (about people).

If you have other questions, don't hesitate asking.

    Have a nice day!

  • dear, Tanya not all what you explained it is clear  let's make point

for 1 i quite understood but not completely i can add this sentence before 1

    But perhaps the most important
    characteristic of all ...

about scramble is not clear the sentence number 3 is before 2

as to 5 isn't clear at all let's me give you more information the diver talks about humpback whale and her calf the crew spots them and they head to them to follow them.

at last i'd like for you clear me up more about ceremony i know this opposite unceremony otherwise all of things is ok

    take care

Practicing English

Everybody has their own methods to learn English. For the first time, I learn from songs. It is easier for me, cos it is a fun way. I learn vocabularies, grammar and idioms... and also pronounciation. Books gives me a lot of knowledge. The most difficult for me to learn is speaking cos we must have a partner to practice. We can't do it alone. I am a housewife with 3 children, and 2 of them are kids, really so hard to find partner to practice cos of my bussiness taking care of them. My husband…
