Writing Prompt: Used To

Writing Prompt ~ Used To

Me and my friends are used to going out from home to work at 7 PM. I don't drive, but my friends Alex and Matt are used to driving because they took their driver's license long time ago. Just Miguel is getting used to driving because he only took his driver's license for 2 months ago. So, I am getting used to getting around in the car with Miguel. To calm myself down when Miguel is driving besides me, I used to take some medication. Miguel is a reckless  new driver! Now, I don't do that anymore because it could harm my health in the long run. To get to our work we are used to crossing the city by the shortest way to it. Sometimes the traffic at 7 PM is unbearable that if we went by the usual way we'd wait around so much time. Once upon a time, we almost got  one hour and a half stucked in the traffic. It's impresive! All of us  are used to spending at least one day a month in the heavy traffic of our city.

  • Great effort! Actually @rysperski, Daniel followed the instructions correctly in the Writing Prompt and is using both types of "used to". You are getting the hang of this, Daniel! Don't forget to think about the verb after "used to" (accustomed to). In most cases you have written it correctly. Here are a few to check

Alex and Matt are used to drive driving

All of us are used to spend spending...

    English Tip (wording)
For not feel scared To calm myself down while Miguel is driving, I used to take some medication. Miguel is a reckless/aggressive driver!

  • Oi Daniel,

Nice story, but there is one little issue I'd like to clarify:

To be/get used to = to be/become accustomed to something/somebody

I live in a big city, so I am used to driving in heavy traffic.

If you want to work here, you must get used to coming to work early.

Used to = something was being done in the PAST, but is not done any more at the present:

When I was working in Kuwait, I used to drink a lot of water. [now I am back home and don't drink so much water as I did in Kuwait]

When I was a kid, Grandpa used to take me with him to the forest to pick mushrooms. [now he does not do it any more, for one or other reason]

We should not use "used to" when speaking about things we do now. Only for actions that we do not do any more but did it some time in the past.

  • Nice... Keep it up
