It seems the book "Capital in the Twenty-First Century" , written by French economist Thomas Piketty, is now selling well in the USA. The central idea of this book is that capitalism broadens the economic disparity and so we must tax the rich more in order to share it with many people.

The reason why this book is now selling well in the USA is because its content is about economic disparity. I read the news, in which the people in the USA are now concerned with economic disparity. They are angry about the monopoly on wealth by a few people and they begin to demand distribution of the wealth.

What do you think about economic disparity and to tax the rich more?

I agree with you. It is important how governments spend the tax.

  • Hi Tam

Governments have been taxing the rich more for years ......but the number of the poor is still increasing, it has the converse result. When the rich are forced to tax more, they try to rise the prices in order to compensate the damage, and then the conditions are worse than before.

After all, how do we know the money from tax is spent for the poor?!!!!

  • Tax is the money that have paid to the government not to be shared with people. Certainly, It will have more profitable for the government. In this case, the government in order to support capitalists making the goods more expensive.

  • Thank you, Tam, for sharing this.

I do not agree with taxing the rich more.  Everyone in this country should pay for himself and not blame the rich.  Businesses pay for their taxes and half of their employees' taxes and all other employees' benefits, including health insurance, retirement, holiday leave, etc.  Businesses don't run for free.  When they can no longer afford to pay their overhead expenses and their employees, what happens to these businesses?  Who will lose their job?  How many more unemployed people will be added to the list?

Just because my neighbors are wealthy and I am poor, that does not give me the right to take away what's theirs.  Just like they don't have the right to take whatever is mine.  If I didn't earn it, why should it be given to me?  Would it be fair to all?  Is this what we want to teach our children?  It is not true that everyone here wants distribution of wealth.  It is just the government that is using the poor as an excuse to get what they want.  I don't believe any decent person living in this country, whether they be poor or not, would wanna be used in this manner.

In my opinion, taxing the rich more is just the government's way of legally robbing it's citizens.  Poor and rich need to pay taxes.  If the rich has responsibility, so does the poor.  We all need to share the responsibility equally.  We can't just take it out all on who has more unless the ones with more are willing to give up part of theirs.  But to forcefully take it from the rich even after they have already given their fair share is just not right at all.  We have so many people here who live off of government's assistance.  I do admit that most of them really need it because they are unable to work and provide for themselves, especially the old and the sick.  But, there are also those who are young and healthy who prefer to receive free food and money while sitting on their couch watching television.  It's sad that the government allows this to happen.  And who pays for all this?  It all comes from the taxes of the hardworking people of this nation - the average and the rich.  So when you have a government that openly encourages its people to just sit around and do nothing about their poverty, it makes me think that to be lazy and poor in this country is not so bad after all.

  •  think this is the wrong base in the USA economy which they tried to settle in developing countries also.the result is creating a rich class in the society. Not only they wouldn't be the helping hand for more improvement but also they are the barriers and a small community for hoarding, monopolizing and so on.you know, when the system is capitalism, you cant expect any other outcome, can you?
