Should I join this group?

This group is not for everybody. Here is a checklist to decide whether or not to join this group. If you can answer YES to all of these questions, please become a member of the MyEC Welcoming Committee.

  • Do I use MyEC often?
  • Do I understand the many features of MyEC and can I show others how these are useful for learning or teaching English? (videos, blogs, challenges, groups, chat room)
  • Do I have time to welcome at least one new member each time I log on?
  • Do I want MyEC to be an English-only, safe, friendly, and fun community?

You need to be a member of MyEnglishClub to add comments!

  • A huge thank you to all of you for helping out with this group in 2010. Please continue to welcome new members whenever you find a free moment. Here is a new post you can share with newbies.
  • hi friends. I glad to join these welcoming new members.
  • It's great to see you all welcoming new members like this. One word of caution about copying and pasting welcome messages. The system may automatically see this as spam and lock you out. This has happened before. Changing one word (the new member's name) is a good idea. Hopefully none of you will experience being locked out for this. I'm so happy to have you on the team. Please encourage other active members you know to join as well.
    Thanks again!
    Tara
  • there is a large amount yet to be welcomed if we all make an effort we can see that none of them have gone without being welcomed.
The feeling of being welcomed is something words cannot explain .It was greet of you all to keep little of your time to reach out to the newcomers. Bob and Karenina thank you for alerting friends, yet there is more to welcome as more are joining in ....So lets all our other welcoming members go out of the way and make a newbie or two welcomed into the club.
All the best and happy commenting

  • HELP! Please...

Nadira told me we had a huge number of new members in need of welcoming. She was right. I have been doing it for over an hour and that got me back to people that joined 20 hours ago. There still seem to be many with no comments.

I loved the warm welcome I received when I arrived here and see where members of this group have logged on and welcomed several members each as we should do.

It seems that there are many more than we can deal with if we just welcome 10 or 12 each. Maybe we can all make a concentrated effort to go back a ways and get the unwelcomed people taken care of. Maybe many of us are not visiting the site because of school and work, or maybe we are just seeing a surge in membership. Either way, it makes me feel terrible when I see someone has been here for a day without any welcome,

I even started copying and pasting the same greeting and links over and over to try to get through these new people. If you go back around 20 hours prior to this message you will see where I burned out.
  • Hi Anele! I'm so happy to hear that you were welcomed warmly by MyEC members! There are some fantastic people who work hard to make people feel welcome. This club would not be the same without them. Thanks for noticing. Have fun on MyEC!
  • Thanks Bob! That is some great advice. Glad to see you in this group.
  • I am glad that we have such a group because it is important to welcome the new members. I have had friend requests from some who have just arrived and always try to send them a message or comment about how to do well here and how this little community works.
I first encourage them to write a blog and tell a little about themselves or the city/town where they live. Writing is the hardest step for many.
I worry about those who have been here a while and made many friends but never have posted a blog. To me writing is the best way for them to gain confidence and skills.

If they are contacting me with "Hey I need someone to help me learn English" or just asking to Skype with me, I try to reorient them as to how things work. I explain that this is a family of friendship and friends will help friends. Rather than just send messages asking for help, add people as friends and read their posts so you can know them. Comment on their blogs and write some yourself. You must be part of the family here to get the best help form others. Just messaging demanding assistance is not going to get the best response.

I also invite them to join groups and participate in contests.
Finally, I tell them that if they are shy about writing they can send their blog to me first for suggestions.

Members Approval

Dear Friends, I have set a new rule for Skypers Group that says "You must be a member of MyEC to Join us on Skype!" SKYPERS Group is always on top of the list of uncle Google when people search for an English Partner or Group. That's why I receive a lot of requests! My Q is: Is it possible to approve members faster? It takes some days to be approved in some cases.Regards.

What could be a good offer for newbies?

When you welcome newbies, you'll probably offer something to them. Then, what could be a good offer? I'll offer to help them to learn/improve their English by telling them what they can do on this site, showing them some useful links, such as Tara's page, encouraging/helping them to write their own blogs or adding/leaving comments on other members' blogs, and so on.

Useful links for newbies

"Newbie" is slang for someone who is new (not experienced) at something or someone who is new to a group. Anjana suggested we create a list of links that are useful for newbies. That way, when we welcome new members we can direct them to this page. This was a great idea! Please help me by adding more helpful MyEC links in the comments.MyEC User Guide http://www.myenglishclub.com/page/myec-user-guideMyEC FAQ: http://www.myenglishclub.com/page/frequently-asked-questionsMyEC Chat:…
