  • All new members! You are welcome!

  • Dear Alhagag! I am very glad to hear from you again. I am fine, thanks. Your questions are always very interesting and I  like answering them. Well, let's start:

    1. If I understand you correctly, the word "lies" confuses you in this part of the sentence. The idea is quite clear: something (you didn't mention) is based (or is a result or something like that) on strong family ties. "Lies" is a third person for "lie", i.e. to be in a horizontal position, to be located somewhere or just to be.

    2. "Scramble" as to amimals may mean "fight" or "make their way". I don't see the full sentence but I think the last suits better for the case.

    3. 'Unceremonious" means without ceremony; informal, abrupt, rude, or undignified.

    4. "free for all" means they all can eat without any ceremonies.

    5. I have some doubs about this item. However, my idea is that the escort is built to protect a female and a calf and to help them run away quickly and safely.

    6. No doubts! It is of no matter to say either "each of them" or just "each".

    7. "Come ( or go) up" means "to come very close to someoone/something", "to near". In your example

    The calf just came
    straight up towards me.

"straight" means that it didn't think or turn anywhere but just came up to a man.

If you still have some questions, please, ask them. As a matter of fact, your English is getting better and better. My congratulations!

    Have a nice day!

  • Dear Learner! Hi! I am fine but rather busy as usual.

As to your question. The example you gave is not a simple sentence (in such sentences s only one clause). It is a complex sentence (there are two interrelated clauses in it). I can't change it into a compound sentence. I understand what you mean so, I will give you a few other examples.

    1. Here are two simple sentences:

    I came home.

I saw her readind a book.

Using these simple sentences we can construct either compound or complex sentence:

I came home and saw her reading a book. (Compound)

When I came home, I saw her reading a book. (Complex)

Is it clear? However, some comlex sentences (like your example) can't be changed into compound ones because they will be senseless.

  • Dear Bimal! You are right, there are many words used as different parts of speech. However, I don't really understand what you want me to explain. Your examples are correct. As to other words, there are so many of them! It is quite natural for English that one word can be used as a noun and as a verb, as an adjective or adverb or even preposition. Do you want me to give you other examples or what? Make yourself clear, please.

  • Dear, Tanya  how is it going ? first of all focus these sentences

    1-lies in the strength
    of our family ties.

    2-and enables her granddaughter
    to scramble free.

    3-with an unceremonious
    poke in the rump,

    4-and when they find food,
    it's a free-for-all.

    5-has seen a female with
a calf and an escort, which is something which mightbuild to, hopefully, a heat run,

    6-It's a clan against a pride,
    each at full strength.

    7-The calf just came
    straight up towards me.

briefly, the question is the meaning of some words if you don't mind

    1-lies

    2-scramble

    3-unceremonious

    4-free-for-all

    5-build to

    7-straight up

about 6 i have a question about the grammar i'd like to debate after preposition "each" why the speaker doesn't say each of them at full strength. considerably, he talks about two groups i hope is clear if you need any clearing don't hesitate .

    hear you soon!

  • Dear Tanya,

The English language is rich with "multi-words", and the same set of multi-words could be placed differently in the construction of sentences.

     For example, "close to"

    Close to (as an adverb)

The concert lasted close to two hours.

    Close to (as a preposition)

The child is close to the mother.

Could you please give me a little elaboration about multi-words with some examples?

    Good luck!

    Bimal

Practicing English

Everybody has their own methods to learn English. For the first time, I learn from songs. It is easier for me, cos it is a fun way. I learn vocabularies, grammar and idioms... and also pronounciation. Books gives me a lot of knowledge. The most difficult for me to learn is speaking cos we must have a partner to practice. We can't do it alone. I am a housewife with 3 children, and 2 of them are kids, really so hard to find partner to practice cos of my bussiness taking care of them. My husband…
