Festivals In Malaysia

Malaysians love to celebrate, and most importantly, we love our Public Holidays. We love all kinds of festivals and thank God that we are from various ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds. But whatever these festivals are, the most common things that bind them are; Public Holidays and "Open House" Concept.

Before I proceed with my ramblings, let me introduce to you the meaning of an "Open House" concept. An "Open House" or "Rumah Terbuka" in Malay is literally means that the house is open to friends, relatives and even strangers to drop by and enjoy a delicious spread by the hosts. It is a tradition unique to Malaysia during festivities; for all kinds regardless of races and religions.

In this bog, I will only talk to you about festivals in Malaysia that are gazetted as Public Holidays and where Open House is part of the celebration. I will not talk about other festivals that may be gazetted as Public Holidays, but there is no Open House, because believed me, there are a lot of those festivals.

I will talk about these festival in chronological order, rather than its significant in Malaysia. Please note that photos in this blog are not mine.

1. Thaipusam

Thaipusam is celebrated by Hindus as a celebration of good over evil; or Lord Murugan’s victory over Soorapadman’s tyranny. It is an amalgam of the words “Thai” which is referring to the Tamil month of Thai (January to February) and "Pusam" which is the brightest star during this period.

During Thaipusam, the believers thank Lord Murugan for granting their wishes and defeating the “daily demons” that plague their lives, such as illnesses, career blocks or infertility. They also ask for forgiveness for any transgressions made and for blessings.

The preparation of Thaipusam itself usually begins before the day itself. Some devotees fast more than a month and some shave their heads. On the eve night of the celebration, some devotees would carry "Kavadis", which is literally “sacrifice at every step”, via hooks and thin spears that pierce their backs, cheeks and mouths. Other devotees would carry milk, a symbol of purity and virtue, as well as flowers and fruits as offerings.

The most famous temple of which this celebration is held is the Batu Caves Temple. Though there is not really a typical "Open House" during Thaipusam, but due to its gaining popularity of which millions of visitors; from local and foreign alike congregated at this Temple, I add this celebration in this blog.

2. Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year or also known as Lunar New Year is celebrated on the first day of the Chinese Lunar Calendar. This is the most important annual festival for the Chinese community. Each year is named after one of the 12 animals according to the Chinese Zodiac. Houses are cleaned and decorated to prepare for the big day. A reunion dinner for the family is held on the eve of the new year. During Chinese New Year most of the decorations are red in colour in order to scare/drive away  evil spirits.

During the celebration, it is common that "angpau" or "angpow" - a red envelope containing some money to be given from married couples or the elderly to unmarried juniors. It is also common for adults or young couples to give red packets to children. Nowadays, it is also common for some Chinese colleagues or friends to give those envelopes to non-Chinese colleagues or friends. In addition to these "angpau", most people would give Chinese Mandarin oranges to all their friends and acquaintances days or even weeks before the celebration.

Lion or dragon dances are common during this festival. Though fireworks are still being enjoyed during this festival, it was no longer the prominent aspect of the celebration due to danger and noisy.

The concept of open house is practiced during this festival where the homes are open for friends and family to visit, regardless of race and religion. The country’s leaders from Chinese background will organise open houses on a larger scale of which it is often held at a community hall to accommodate the crowds of locals and foreign visitors who come to greet their leaders and tuck into festive goodies.

3. Wesak Day

Wesak Day is celebrated by Buddhists in Malaysia as in other countries in the world by usually begins at dawn at Buddhist temples. A candle procession is the highlight of the celebration. At the same time, offerings of prayers, burning of joss sticks and incense, giving food to the needy and donations are also made. Ardent devotees will take turns to bathe the Buddha statue, which is a special ritual that represents the purification and cleansing of one’s soul.

As part of accepted culture, Open House for Wesak Day is also being observed where vegetarian food is offered. The Buddhist Country's leaders will host open house on larger scale too.

4. Hari Raya Puasa or Eid Fitri

Hari Raya Puasa or Eid Fitri is the celebration of Muslim after fulfilling the obligation of fasting for the whole month of Ramadhan. The first day of celebration is on the first day of the month of Shawal and in Malaysia, we celebrate it for the whole month. After the Eid prayer at the nearest mosque, most Muslim families will visit the graves of their loved ones. After the visit from the graves, family members will congregated and asking forgiveness from each other. During this festival, Malaysian Muslims will wear colourful traditional dresses.

Open houses will be conducted for the whole month. This means that anyone, from family members and strangers alike can come visit and enjoy dishes without having to call and make appointment. Special dishes during this festival are normally "lemang" (glutinous rice cooked in bamboo), "rendang" (a dry stew of chicken or beef cooked in spices) and "ketupat" (rice cooked in coconut or palm leaves).

Muslims in Malaysia also has adapted the culture of giving "angpau" which normally given to kids in their early teenagers. "Angpau" also is given to family members who are yet to work or unmarried. Chinese New Year's "angpau" is only in red as compared to Hari Raya's "angpau" which is colourful.

The Muslim Country's leaders will host open houses on larger scales in their own states or constituencies.

5. Deepavali or Diwali

Deepavali or also known as Diwali is the Festival of Lights which is being celebrated by Hindu. It is the celebration of triumph of light over darkness and good over evil, thus the lights will be kept on the whole night. It is celebrated on the Hindu month of Kartik which falls in October or November. It is also the time of reunion of family members.

Houses will be decorated with colorful paper lanterns and kolam. The kolam is an intricate design on the floor made from coloured rice and colored powder. Most shopping complexes and public buildings will also put some kolam decorations to signify the celebration. At the dawn of Deepavali, Hindus perform ritual oil bath which signifies the cleansing of the body and soul. Just like the other festivals in Malaysia, Open Houses are also being observed during Deepavali which is a great occasion for people of all races and religions to come together to celebrate culture over tasty food and good companionship. The Hindu Country's leaders will conduct open houses on greater scales.

6. Christmas

As in other countries around the world, Christmas in Malaysia is celebrated on 25 December every year. It is a family gathering starting with a midnight mass on Christmas Eve followed by Christmas Day celebration the next day. Maybe a big difference between Christmas in Malaysia as compared to other countries is that, again, just like any other festivals in Malaysia, the Open Houses. People of from all walks of lives will celebrate with Christian friends by visiting their houses.

I hope I have shown the uniqueness of Malaysia and most importantly the uniqueness of Malaysians which come from a melting pots of ethnics, cultures and religions. Even though Islam is the predominant religion in the country, other religions are being practised and most importantly, all Malaysians will celebrate these festivals.

~~~~~~ Chapter 9 ~~~~~~
“Happy birthday, Lina” They were in their favourite restaurant waiting for their desserts when suddenly Saufiq gave her a small box. Lina felt a little bit over whelmed when looking at that box. Saufiq always gave her extravagant gifts for her birthday, but she knew that today’s gift was a bit different.
“Open it” Saufiq’s smile was a bit nervous.
“But …. Saufiq” Lina tried to push back the box to Saufiq. She did not want to confirm what she knew was inside the box.
“Take it, Lina. Please. You know how I felt about you, even though I never say it to you. You know all those supposedly girl friends were not what I was looking for. I want you to take it. This is to show how much I love you. I know I was a fool for not telling you all this before." Lina glad that they had this conversation after their meals. She was not sure whether she could eat even a bit if Saufiq gave her this much earlier.
When Lina did not say anything, it was like a dam burst for Saufiq. He could not stop from telling Lina what had been in his mind and heart all this time. "If you accept my love, I want you to think this as a pre-engagement ring. I would ask my family to properly request for your hands of marriage from your Mom. If you can’t accept my love, I want you to think this a gift from your best friend who always wanted what is the best for you”. Saufiq knew he has nothing to lose but a lot to gain by baring his soul to Lina.
“Ohhhh … Saufiq … What am I supposed to say to you?” Lina did not care if people were watching. She was trying very hard not to cry. She was choking with emotions.
“Don’t say anything. Accept it. Think about it. Sleep on it. You know I will always respect and accept whatever decision that you are going to make. But I want you to know this, I love you. I have been in love with you for years. I never said it before because I was a fool. Maybe I thought I was not good enough for you. Whatever the reasons were, I was a fool.” Saufiq voice held a very determined note in it.
For the next few days, Lina was in pensive moods. Mom had been calling her asking for her decision whereas Saufiq had stopped calling or texting her after that night. Lina was torn. She knew Saufiq was just giving her the space and time that she needed. But, she missed Saufiq badly. She never realised how all these whiles that he was always there for her. On the other hands, here she was, realising that her first love was just within her arms’ length, so to speak. She had always dreamt her life with Hakim since her teenagers' years. She knew her life with Hakim would meant that her dreams were fulfilled.
After much soul searching, Lina knew that she had made her decision. She knew she was going to hurt the feelings of a good man, but this was her time. She was going to be selfish and for once to make a decision for her own, and not others.
She had to call her Mom to make some preparations, but first, she had to call two important men and tell them on her decision.
Taking a deep breath Lina dialed the number that she knew by heart. “Hi. Please don’t say anything before I finish my words. I need to say this to you uninterrupted. I need to be brave to say this, and I am sorry for not saying this face to face."
After a moment of silent, with a teary voice Lina knew she had to say what she had to say; "I want you to know that you were my first love. You were a big puzzle in my life. But that life puzzle was completed fifteen years ago. All these times I was pinning for something that was already completed. I just realised that I have a new life puzzle and you are not a big part of it anymore. I am sorry to say that I am in love with someone else.”
Hakim was silent for a long moment after listening to that. “I understand Lina. It was a long time ago. I wish you all the happiness in the world because you know you deserved it. Be happy always. I want you to be happy. I hope you could look back with some fond memories. Good bye Lina. You know I won’t be calling you anymore” Lina heard a soft click on the other end and knew the closure that she was looking for had finally completed. She could not help from feeling a hint of melancholy for those sweet times, but her future was looking much brighter.
With a touch of giddiness, she dialled Saufiq’s phone. “You know I have been wearing this ring for the past few days and it feels right. I don’t expect we are going to have a long engagement since we had lost so much time already. So get your butt out from that office, and ask your family to meet my Mom.” She was laughing while saying this to Saufiq.
“I love you” It felt right to say it to Saufiq and when he said “I love you too” she felt so much warmth and happiness. She knew she made the right decision, and looking forward for her next life adventures.
~~~~~~ Chapter 8 ~~~~~~

"When did come back last night? You did not call me. I was worried." Saufiq's text was the first thing which she saw that morning. Saufiq hated texting, so to receive his text meant that he was a bit pissed off with her.

"Don't start with me Saufiq. I am a big girl. LOL. I came back late last night. I am sorry for not calling you. It was late, and I don't want to disturb your beauty sleep. LOL." Instead of calling him, she replied back his text. Tit for tat. In Lina's view, Saufiq was being childish.

For the next few months, Lina was feeling giddy. She was feeling that she was recapturing the lost of her sunny sides. Sometimes she would feel like giggling for no apparent reasons. She could not stop from smiling. Hakim would always shower her with romantic gestures such as sending her fresh flowers to the office every other day, opening doors for her and calling her every night before going to sleep. The office was buzzing with gossips about Hakim, but she tried to ignore them.

She had to juggle her friendship with Saufiq and her growing closeness with Hakim. Her growing closeness with Hakim drew contentious argument with Saufiq sometimes. “Served him right for all those girlfriends’ stories all these years” Lina knew she was being petty, but she wanted to re-capture all those lost moments with Hakim.

"Lina, Tuan Kamil came to the house the other day. He was asking is it possible for him to represent Hakim in asking whether you would agree to get engage with Hakim?” Lina was stumped with silence. How does she feel about Hakim? Even though they were getting close, she was not so sure that she felt the same as before. She was too independent for her own good sometimes. She liked being single, not answerable to anyone.

“I don’t know Mom. It is too soon. Let me think about it” Carefully Lina chose her words.

“What else you want to think Lina" Mom made it a statement rather than a question. "Both of you know each other since childhood. Hakim is a good man. He is financially independent. His kids need a good mother. I am sure you can be a good mother to his kids” Mom, being a mom always looked at those logical matters.

Lina had to admit what Mom said was right. She liked both of Hakim’s kids. She had met Sarah a few times when she came back to visit Mom. Sarah had made her childhood place as her own, which made Lina grateful. Lina wanted somebody to enjoy that place as she used to do. Adam was just like Hakim when he was a kid, but with a sunny disposition.

How does she felt to be a mother of those kids? She knew she could come to love those kids eventually, which was not hard to do, but it was just too soon to think further. All she wanted was to enjoy the moment, to recapture the magic.

Footnote

1. Tuan is normally used by a person of perceived of lower social position in addressing a man of higher social position. In this case, Tuan Kamil - Hakim's Dad is considered of higher position by Lina's Mom because he's rich and thus of higher importance in the village. In English it can be synonym with Sir.

2. In Malay's culture, if a man is interested with a girl, he would ask his family or his family's representative to "inquire"; in Malay we called it "Merisik", whether the girl is available and agree to be betrothed or engaged. This is not the engagement itself. This is the pre-engagement. In some cases, a ring would be presented to show the intention. Sometimes, an agreement is enough. After getting the answer that the girl is agreed to be betrothed, then only then the family of the guy or his representative(s) would ask properly for an engagement. An engagement ring would be presented to the girl. In Malay culture, the man would never get involved in all these two processes. His family or representative(s) would speak on his behalf. The representative(s) normally from his other family members such as Uncle or Aunt or some elders.

~~~~~~ Chapter 6 ~~~~~~
"May, may I have En. Hakim's phone number." She said to May. Finally, a few days later, Lina was brave enough to talk to Hakim.
With a deep breath, Lina dialed the number. "Hello, may I speak to Hakim please." Lina realised her hands were clammy and she was gripping the phone very hard.
"Hello! Lina is that you?" She could hear the smile in Hakim's voice. "Oh my God. I can still recognise your voice even after all these years." Hakim's voice sounded more matured. More self assured, not like an angst teenager anymore.
Lina thought that her voice sounded a bit like a trembling teenager, but she was really nervous to talk to Hakim. "Hi Hakim. I am sorry I did not talk to you sooner. You know....  I was busy with things ... " Lina knew that Hakim knew she was just making excuses.
"Hey, hey ... that is okay. You are one important lady in your Company. I am just glad that you call me back." Hakim reassured her.
After an awkward silent, Hakim said; "Why don't we meet somewhere this afternoon. There are a lot of things that we need to catch up on. You know office walls really have ears, well maybe eyes too." Lina could sense laughter in Hakim's voice.
After agreeing to meet Hakim later, Lina felt relieved.
"Hey, are we still on with that midnight movie tonight." Saufiq's voice interrupted the silent.
"Oh my God, Saufiq. I am so sorry. I had totally forgot about it. Can I have a rain check on that? I just made another plan this evening." Lina felt guilty for totally forgotten about their plan to watch the movie. They had been planning to watch it for the past few weeks.
"Hmm ... so what is the other great plan that you had made that you totally forgot about our movie night?"
Lina realised that Saufiq's voice had some edge to it.
"Ummm .... I promised to meet with Hakim, to talk things through. It's nothing really. I just need to do some closure." Reluctantly Lina had to tell Saufiq on her plan. She owed him that.
"Okay. Call me if you want me to beat him to pulp. I do have some muscles, you know." Though his voice still had the slight edge to it, Lina knew Saufiq was trying to lighten up the situation.
"I will. I will call you when I am back home. Promise."
As explained in the previous chapter, Encik or En. is used to address a man in a formal conversation. In this case, even though Lina knew Hakim, but to show the formality of the conversation, she was using En. while addressing him to her Secretary.
~~~~~~ Chapter 7 ~~~~~~

Lina was a nervous wreck while sitting at the corner of the restaurant. She was too early and had a lot on her mind. She could not keep still so she decided to browse through her phone to hide it.

"Hey Lina. I am sorry for being late." Lina nearly dropped her phone.

"Ohhhhhhhh .... hey. That is okay. I know I was early. Have a sit." Lina knew she sounded like a nervous teenager, but that was how she really felt at that moment. Her throat suddenly parched and dried. Hakim did not change much. Maybe he looked more self-assured and had a few grey hairs near his temple, but otherwise he still looked the same.

"You look wonderful" Hakim said while shaking her hand.

They exchanged a few nervous smiles. "Lets order first, and then we can speak more freely". Lina was conscious of the nearby waiter who was hovering to take their orders.

After placing their orders, Lina decided to speak first. "Tell me what you have been up to all these years." "How are you?" Hakim said. They nearly spoke at the same time. After a nervous laugh, “Go on, you first.” she asked him to tell her his story.

When Hakim started to tell her his story, the years seemed melt away. Here was the same boy who she grew up with. Here was the same boy who had stolen her heart and broke it at the same time. He told her how miserable he was in the first few months while in UK even though he was staying with his brothers. They did not have the time to baby sit their baby brother. While in his second year, he decided to change his course and the university, to the dismay of his parents. After that he learned to be independent. He met his late wife Samantha while he was in his fourth year. They had a good life, but then she was killed a drunk driver.

Lina remained silent through out his story. Once in a while, she would sipped her drink, but did not say anything. "Hey, I have been telling you all about my life. I am sorry. You must be bored to death to hear me yapping. Now it is your turn to tell me all about you."

She was relieved when their food arrived. It meant she could delay the inevitable. "Why don't we eat first, and then I will tell you all about what I have been to. It is not as interesting as yours". Lina forced her voice to sound cheerful.

Their meals were pleasant, and only being interrupted once in a while when their waiter refilled their drinks. Lina was grateful for the silent. It gave her the time to gather her thoughts. After the waiter cleared up their plates, reluctantly Lina knew she had to tell Hakim what had happened to her. "Told you, nothing interesting happened to me" She tried to make light of her story at the end of the conversation. Hakim did not say anything for a few moments. "I am sorry Lina. You never told me all these in your letters. I wished I knew. Even Mom and Dad never mention anything."

"Hakim, even if you knew what was going on, there was nothing you can do to help me. My parents were right to ask me to help my siblings in their studies, especially with Dad's poor health. I may not become the Doctor as I want to be, but I have a good job. My siblings are successful."

"But ... I am sorry that you had to go through that alone" Hakim sounded genuine in his regret.

Lina knew Hakim felt remorse over the things that had happened to her. She also realized that she wanted him to feel remorseful. How could he left her and go to UK and on top of that get married? She realised all this while she perceived that Hakim had abandoned her when she had needed him the most. Suddenly, she felt childish for feeling this way. She knew she needed to forgive Hakim, and ask his forgiveness as well.

"Hakim, I am sorry too for feeling that you had abandoned me when I needed you. I knew deep in my heart that we were too young ....... too dependent on our families to change anything. Please forgive me" Lina felt as if a big boulder had been lifted from her shoulder after she said that.

After that Lina felt more at ease and they started to talk about general things. She found she could still laugh with Hakim as easy as before.

"Excuse Sir and Madame, we are sorry. We are closing the restaurant."

"Oh ... gosh ... it is nearly 11 at night. We have been talking for hours. I am sorry for taking your time so long." Lina felt a bit sheepish.

"I am glad we have this conversations. Can we meet again?" Hakim asked Lina. It took her a heartbeat moment to answer. How does she feel? She had to admit that she was happy that they were connected again. But he was no longer the big part of her life. "Sure, if time permits." Finally she answered. Her non-committal answer was the best she could give at that moment.

Only In Malaysia

 Let me share with you some facts about Malaysia. Some facts that are not well known, quirky and sometimes, totally obscure. (I have added and made some amendments from the original blog)

Only In Malaysia:-

Independence Day

Malaysia celebrates its Independence Day twice in a year. Once every August 31 which we called "Hari Kemerdekaan - Independence Day", and the other one is every September 16 of which we called "Hari Malaysia - Malaysia Day".

Malaya; this is the former name of Malaysia got its independence from the British on 31 August 1957. At that time, Malaya was also known as "Tanah Melayu: - which literally translated as "Malay Land". At this time, Malaya only consisted all the states in the Peninsular or West Malaysia which were 12 states. So Independence Day celebrated Malaysia's Independence from the British.

In 1963, three more states joined Malaya from British Colonisation. They were Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak. Sabah and Sarawak are also known as the East Malaysia. However, later Singapore ceded from Malaysia and became an Independent Country on its own.

Nine Sultans For A Small Country

Malaysia consists of fourteen states with two Federal Territories. Nine of these states have Sultans (Kings) as their Head of States. These Sultans would presides over Religious and Ceremonial Matters only. Every five years, they would elect among themselves to be the Duli Yang Maha Mulia Seri Paduka Yang Di Pertuan Agong - or The Royal Highness, or the Head of Malaysia. Since Prime Minister has the Executive power in Malaysia, the Royal Highness, only presides over religious and ceremonial matters.

Perak Man

One of the oldest Paleolithic human skeleton who was estimated to be 10,000 - 11,000 years old was uncovered in Perak - one of the states in Malaysia, thus the name. Perak can be directly translated as "silver". The irony was that there was no silver being mined in the state, but it was famous for its tin mines.

Eating is Our Full Time Occupation

Only in Malaysia that eating is an obsession and a full time job. This is typical eating times for us Malaysian.

Breakfast  : 7.30 am to 9.30 am

Morning Tea : 10.30 am to 11.30 am.

Lunch  : 12.30 noon to 2.00 pm.

To combat the sleepiness, we need to have our afternoon tea

Afternoon Tea : 3.30 pm to 4.00 pm.

Dinner : 8.00 pm to 9.00 pm

Supperfrom 11.00 pm onward.

This is because we need to store some energy while sleeping, therefore we have to have our supper. Try to remember the schedules for the Morning Tea and Afternoon Tea especially when dealing with Government agencies.

Where We Can "Pull" Our Drinks

Do you know only Malaysians can "Pull" their hot drinks? LOL. Over here we like to have our hot drinks to be "Tarik - or literally means Pull". We would ask for our hot drinks to be "pulled" to make them cooler and frothier. The most popular "pull" drinks are "Teh Tarik - Pulled Tea" and "Kopi Tarik - Pulled Coffee".

Where The Citizens Can Eat "Nail", "Stone" and Such

We love to eat vegetable which we called "Pucuk Paku - literally translated as "Shoots Nail" or for you guys, it is known as Ferns. We also love to eat or drink our "Jambu Batu - or directly translated as "Guava Stone ". It is just the normal green guava.

We also love to eat our fruit "Buah Mata Kucing" which literally meant as " Fruit of Cat's Eyes". LOL. It is just a local longan. Do not fret. We also love to drink "Air Batu Campur - Water Mix With Stone" . It is just an ice blended concoction with some fruits, red beans and a few local ingredients.

Finally, only in Malaysia there is a Granny Talking Cat that chats in an English Chat Room. Gotcha. LOL

~~~~~~ Chapter 5 ~~~~~~
"Cik Lina, a phone call for you." May's voice through the intercom interrupted Lina's musing.
"Who is it May?" Lina had told her Secretary to hold all calls unless they were urgent. She was in no mood to talk to anyone today. Scenes of her meeting with Sarah had been playing in her mind. Sarah and Hakim's faces had been intermingled in her dreams last night. Her sleep was restless and now she was having one big headache.
"I know you told me to hold all your calls today, but this gentleman said that you would talk to him when I told you his name. He said his name is Hakim." May sound tentative.
"Hmm ... told him that I am in a meeting or something." Lina knew she sounded brusque, but she just could not handle trying to talk to Hakim now, and maybe even much later. She did not know when she would be ready to talk to him again.
Having decided that her day was irrevocable gone from bad to worse, Lina knew it was useless trying to put any effort on her work. "May, I am going to go back early today. I am having a big migraine now. Please just take notes on any matters that need my attention tomorrow. I will see you", Lina told her Secretary.
After that, Hakim had been calling her office nearly every day, and each time she refused to answer his phone calls. She knew she was being irrational and a little bit coward, but she was just not ready to face Hakim again. She knew the staff had started to wonder about Hakim. Office gossips were just like a wild fire. They spread rapidly.
"Ok.... I have had enough. So tell me who is this elusive Hakim and why have you been avoiding him." Trust Saufiq to ask her point blank.
"Hakim? Who is that?" Lina avoided looking at Saufiq when she said that.
"Ohhhhh. Come on. You can come up better than that lame sentence Lina. This is me, remember. Saufiq the great. Just tell Uncle Agony here who is that Hakim and what has he done to you until you want to avoid him like a leper. If you want me to drag him down and tie him up to a rambutan tree, I will do that." As usual, Saufiq always managed to make her smile.
"Well... it is just a long story. I am sure you have a better thing do to that to listen to me."
"Uh uh... you know better than that. You had been listening to all my heartaches all this time, now it is my turn to listen to you." Saufiq said and refused to budge.
"Hmmm ... better still... let's go to our favourite coffee house, and you can pour all those juicy details to me over a yummy chocolate cake. It's my treats." Saufiq cajoled her while at the same time half dragging her out from the office.
"May, we are playing hooky this afternoon and I am kidnapping Cik Lina. But tell everyone that Cik Lina is in a very important meeting and cannot be disturbed." Saufiq can be as serious and bossy as he wanted to be.
Over two pieces of chocolate cakes and a large cup of her favourite caramel macchiato coffee, she poured her heart out to Saufiq. Saufiq did not say anything, just listen to her. Then she realised that all these while she had been suppressing her anger and heartache towards her family and Hakim. She thought she had accepted what destiny had thrown to her. But talking to Saufiq made her realised that, those feelings were hidden deep inside her heart and now it was bubbling over. She knew she needs to talk to Hakim to make peace with herself. To finally accept what she had been through.
Footnote :
Cik is a Malay word to address an unmarried woman. It's synonym of Miss. Puan or Pn. is used to address a married woman and also to address a woman with higher position. If the status of the lady is not known, normally we address her with Cik for normal conversation, but for formal conversation, if the status is unknown, we use Puan. In this case, her Secretary is using Cik as in Miss since Lina is unmarried and she's familiar with Lina. The Secretary is not using Puan or Pn. to address Lina even though Lina is of higher position.
For a man, Encik or En. is used, whether he's married or single.
"Hakim had came back." Lina nearly spurted her ice tea when Mom said that out of the blue. Both of them were enjoying an afternoon tea and just talking about general matters and trying to catch up on news.
With an extra care she put the glass back on the table. "Hmm... when?" Lina tried to sound nonchalant.
"A few months back, with his two kids. Apparently his wife had died. So he decided to come back to Malaysia and work in his Dad's Company." Mom loved to gossip. Due to her work, Lina seldom came back home to see Mom. She regretted that, so when she came back she was always trying her best to listen to all the gossips that Mom had been dieing to tell her. Mom had a penchant for telling what had been happening in the village for the whole year in just a few hours.
What could she say to that news? She did not even know how she felt anymore. She knew that her love for Hakim was not a puppy love, but it had been years. She did not know how Hakim felt anymore. He was married to someone else, for goodness sake. She had carved a good life for herself.
Looking out from the kitchen window, Lina was hit by a nostalgic feelings. Suddenly the urge to see her secret hiding place was too much for her."Mom, I think I want to take a walk to the river. It had been years since I have been there" Lina told Mom after their afternoon tea.
With her heart beating faster, Lina walked to the river bank. There was nothing much changed at the river bank. She still could hear children's shout and laughter. She was glad that some of them seemed still enjoying the nature and not just playing with their computers. With much trepidation and unerringly, she walked to her secret place. She was surprised when she saw a blonde child about eight years old sitting quietly while reading a book. She seemed to be very engrossed, but suddenly looked up as if she knew she was not alone anymore. She had the most piercing blue eyes, but they were too solemn for a kid of her age. Without being told who she was, Lina knew that this kid was Hakim's child.
"I am sorry for disturbing you. I thought there would be no one in here. I'll go." Lina said while retreating.
"Don't go. You must be Aunt Lina." Lina was surprised. She had spoken with good Malay though with some lilting English accent.
"Hmmm...  Yes, I am Lina. How do you know my name?" Lina could not help but felt intrigued with this child.
"Dad told me about this place the first time he brought me to this river. He said this place was belonged to his good friend, Lina. I am Sarah by the way." She brushed her palms against her jeans and extended her hand to shake Lina's.
"I asked Dad whether you would mind of me having this place as my own. Dad was sure that you do not mind. In fact he said he was sure that you would be happy that someone else would look after it. He said you spent many hours in here, reading books."
Lina was speechless. "Emmm ... Nice to meet you, Sarah. But I need to go now. Please say my regard to your Dad." Lina did not wait for Sarah's reply.
"Aunt Lina, I hope to see you again soon." Lina knew that she was fleeing. So she forced herself to turn and face Sarah.
"Me too, Sarah. See you" Her voice was brittle but she forced herself to sound cheerful.
Back in Mom's house, Lina did not say anything. Her last day with Mom was spent with mundane tasks.
"When are you coming back?" Mom asked Lina the same questions every time she was going back to the City.
"When I am free, Mom." And Lina would gave Mom the same answer. It was their routine.
"Hmmm .. .you work too hard." Lina had to smile when hearing that from Mom. A few weeks back, Saufiq said the same thing to her. "Is it high time you get married and settle down? Have a kid of your own. You are not getting any younger, you know. What about that young man Saufiq? You are always mentioning him. Your brother Rizal already had two kids. Your sisters Anna and Ida had a family of their own already" Normally she just smiled when hearing Mom nagged about her being single and childless, but today, she felt a bit annoyed especially when Mom started to drag Saufiq's name in the conversation. Deep down she thought she knew Saufiq loves her, but she doubted she felt the same way about Saufiq. In addition Saufiq never say anything to her, a player like Saufiq would not want to be tied down. .
"I'll call you when I reached home Mom." She kissed Mom cheeks. She noticed Mom's worried look, but Mom always worried about her.
Rin Tin Tin - My English Hero
A little note from me. Someone pointed out to me that it was not supposed to be Rin Tin Tin - for the comic. It was supposed to be called Tin Tin. Forgive me if I gave the wrong impression. I was talking about the Belgian Comic Book. Some people may call it Tin Tin. But for me, it was always Rin Tin Tin. Anyway, whether it was Tin Tin or Rin Tin Tin, I will be forever grateful for my English Hero.
I love reading. As far as I could remember, I would always have a book, magazine or even a comic in my hand. When I was a kid, my mom always threaten to take away my food from the table because I would always reading while eating.
When I was in the primary school, I had asked to be a librarian in order for me to have the privileged of being allowed to borrow extra books. Enid Blyton and Charles Dickens were my favourite authors. But all those books were being translated into my own native language. Reading something in English was as foreign as the aliens. The only time that I had to read something in English was in the English classroom itself. We were "forced" to learn English from Standard One (that was when we were 7 years old). Those English classes were torturous. The only thing that I looked forward to was when we were learning some English songs like "Twinkle Twinkle Little Stars" and "Brother John".
When I was 12, I was sent by the Government to study at a school in the city. This was a programme by the Government to ensure that under privileged and rural kids had the same opportunity of educations as the urban kids. The only thing made things bearable while living in a hostel far away from your parents was books. I had became more an avid reader. I would borrow books from the library nearly every single day, until one day I realised that I had read all the books written in my native language and there was no more books in the library for me to read.
I lamented my problem to a friend and was telling her I could not find anymore books to read. Then she said to me "Why don't you try to read the English books?. There are more English books in the library than the books in our native language". I was aghast.
"I cannot read an English book". I said.
"Why not?" she asked.
"Well, I do not understand most of the English words. I do not want to read a book that I cannot understand".
"Have you ever tried reading an English book before?" She asked me again.
I took a few minutes to reply her, and finally admitted that I never try reading an English book on my own before.
Then she said to me, "Why don't you try reading an English comic first. Once you think you can understand them, then you may try reading some short stories. Give it a try".
Reluctantly, I agreed to give it a try. My first attempt was reading the Rin Tin Tin comic. I think the only thing that attracted me to read the Rin Tin Tin comic was the illustrations. And lo behold, I found myself fascinated with the comics and realised that the English words were not too difficult to understand at all. From there on, I fell in love with English written works.
The illustrations of the Rin Tin Tin Comic what made me chose it among other comics
I must admitted that for the first few attempts of reading English books, I would put a dictionary next to the book. Every time I found an English word that I did not understand, I would scoured my dictionary to find the meaning of that word. Then I realised, my brain would not retain the meaning of the world after a few pages.
So I decided just to write down all the words that I did not understand in a note book. Instead of immediately looking up the meaning of the word in the dictionary, I would continue reading and trying to decipher  the meaning of the sentences and understand the concept rather than the meaning of individual words. After finishing a few pages or even a few chapters, then only then, I would look up in the dictionary for the meaning of all the words that I have had written down. With this system, I found out that I could remember the meanings of the words better and they would stuck in my mind.
I owed my gratitude to this special friend for pushing me towards English books. I would forever have a special affections for Rin Tin Tin because it managed to make reading an English work as easy as ABC. And for that, Rin Tin Tin would be forever my English Hero.
~~~~~~ Chapter 3 ~~~~~~

Fifteen years later.

"Lina .... you work too hard". Lina had to smile upon hearing that voice. Saufiq had been saying that to her for the past few years.

She looked up and gestured at Saufiq to sit. "We are supposed to go out for lunch, remember? You promised me." Saufiq pretended to whine.

"In a minute. I need to answer this important e-mail." She tried to sound stern, but it was hard. She could not help from keeping a smile from her face.

"Everything is important for you, except me." Saufiq was born a flirt. He changed girlfriends like a girl changed her shoes. So she never took his words too seriously.

After fifteen years of hard work, she was now a Senior Manager in the factory. How her life had turned 360 degrees. From a heart broken girl who took the first work being offered to her, to being a Senior Manager in the same factory. She was determined to change her life. Therefore, on the second year after she worked, she took a decision to study part time while helping her parents in supporting her three siblings with their study. Life was hard, juggling her work at the same time studying. She almost quit her study when in her third year, her father's illness took to the worst and he died. Suddenly she became the bread winner of the family. But she persevered. She needed to be, her whole family was depending on her from thereon.

She had no time for anything else. She had became a very serious woman. Gone was the mischievous girl. In her place was a very determined and serious woman. But she was happy, as happy as she could be. She would look back over the last fifteen years with a tinge of sadness. But being a melancholy was not in her dictionary of life.

She received her first letter from Hakim after about four months after he left and he was apologetic. He was busy trying to adapt being far from his parents and concentrating on his study. She answered his letter while trying to paint a happy life. She never reveal to Hakim the true picture. But his letters were only intermittent. Then they stopped altogether. A few years after that, she heard from the grapevine that he got married to an English girl. His parents flew to UK for the wedding. She did not feel anything. Her busy life, trying to cope with her part time studies and working took most of her time and life. But she felt some accomplishment when her siblings were successful in their studies.

Now she could breathe a sigh of relief. Though her dream to be a doctor would never materialised, she was happy with what she had accomplished. Maybe this was what God had meant her to be. Maybe this was her fate.

While closing her laptop, and gathering her handbag, she said to Saufiq "Okay. Lets go lunch, and you can tell me all about your latest girlfriend." He always could make her laugh silly, like a school kid.

"Well .... you know, I met this cute girl. Her name is .... " His voice trailed off. She could tune out all the details while pretending to listen. She could laugh at the appropriate punch lines. She had learned to do that and showed the world a happy face.

My Short Story - How I Wish

"This short story is dedicated to Tara Benwell who showed me that I can write something totally alien to me. To Mickey for always come up with many interesting stories. To my dearest friends, Grape and Eric who first motivated me to write. To all my EC friends, thank you for the friendship."

"Knock, knock". Just looking at that simple words, suddenly my dreadful day seems to be of the past.

"Where have you been?" I asked.

"I haven't seen you in a few days."

"Are you okay?" I know I was bombarding her with too many questions, but I just couldn't help it. It had been a week since I saw and talked to her in this Chat Room. I missed her. Finally, I admitted to myself that without realising it, I love her. Without having met her, or even knowing her face, I had fallen into the trap of internet love.

Me, a guy who scoffed at such things as real virtual friendship and real virtual love. I was a guy who was married to his work, trying to prove to everyone, especially my parents that I was as great as my other siblings. That my youth mistakes and follies were behind me. I had turned over a new leaf.

Due to my stressful work, I often spent my social time in this Chat Room. I was so tired by the end of the day, that I just wanted to spend my time with endless and mindless chat with strangers. By doing this, I knew that these strangers would not put any expectation towards me, nor did I expect anything from them.

I was an old member of this Chat Room. I had never revealed anything about myself, nor did I have any true friends. I watched with fascination when I saw some members became attached to each other, like brothers and sisters, some even became more than that. I don't recall any chat members that could say out loud that they knew me. I preferred it that way. For me, this Chat Room was just an outlet to release some of the stress and sometimes my anger to some strangers. It was just like talking to a psychiatrist without having to pay for anything.

I can't remember exactly when she first entered this Chat Room. But I remembered that she seemed so bright, so friendly, that in a very short time, nearly everyone was her friends. I felt so left out. So I started to chat with her. I just wanted to know what made her seem so bright and shiny. So, I started my first conversation with her with "Knock, knock" on her private box.

After a long time, I saw her reply "Knock, knock".

"Why didn't you immediately respond?" I asked.

"Because you seemed snobbish. LOL" I was surprised with her reply. First, I didn't think she would dare to say it out loud to me. Second, I never thought that she would respond to me because we had never chatted before.

From that day onward we started to chat. From simple things such as my frustration with my parents high expectations of me to my hobbies and dislikes. I liked her views on everything. She seemed so positive on everything. Sometimes, jokingly, I called her Ms-So-Sunny-Optimistic. She just laughed.

"Why don't you have a girlfriend?" Out of the blue, she asked me that one day. I was stumped.

"Emm .. I just haven't met any girl that I want to spend my day with" I said. Her simple question made me take a better look at myself. Whether I was the one who put myself too high on the pedestal, or whether it was my parents and my siblings, of which ended up that I have to ignore other things including love.

"Don't any of your neighbours have any young girls that you would like to know. LOL?" She asked me a few months back.

"Well, there is my neighbour's daughter. I like the way she handles herself. I like the way she laughs with her parents and her siblings. But we never talk to each other. We just exchange smiles". I said.

"Why not". She asked me.

I did not answer her. She knew when not to push for an answer, and would talk about something else. That was what I liked about her. She gave me space when I needed it.

We had been chat friends for more than nine months. She never even asked once for my photo, nor did I ask her for one though lately I had asked her in a subtle way for her picture. I noticed that she would not enter the Chat Room for a few days. When I did not see her for a few days, I would start getting worried. I started to think something was wrong. I promised myself that when I saw her again, I wanted to know the truth. But then every time I saw her again, all those things seemed so trivial. I was just glad to see her and totally forgot about my silly questions.

Lately, she seemed a bit quiet. Every time I asked her what was wrong, she just said, it was her work.Though her answers seemed to be obscure at time, I could relate to the pressure of workload. So I did not push her. I trusted her. I just told her that she could count on me and she could tell me all about her problems. By this time, I think I realised that I no longer thought of her as just my virtual friend, but much more than that.

I did not want to tell her my real feelings. I did not want her to feel awkward to chat with me. Furthermore, we did not even know each other's names and had never seen each other faces. But, I had a feeling that she felt the same things towards me. That was maybe the reason for the long silence at times. I thought she was dealing with her feelings differently.

Last Monday, when I reached home, I saw a lot of people gathered at my neighbour's house. I was told that her daughter had just died due to cancer. Being a neighbour, I went to their house and paid my respect though, like I said before, I did not know her nor her name. It seemed, she had been living with the cancer for a long time. At first every one thought she had combated her illness, and it was in remission. But, in the last three months, the cancer came back with a vengeance. And there was nothing a doctor could do. I did not know about all of this, since I always heard her laughter in the house. She was always teasing her siblings, especially her youngest brother. I felt sad because she was young, and it made me realised that time awaits no one.

That night, I was waiting for her to come to the Chat Room. I wanted to tell her about my feeling towards her. I did not care if she laughed in my face after I said it. I waited for hours, but she did not come. Okay. I thought maybe she was busy with her work. The next day, I waited and waited. Still she did not come. I was getting angry with myself for not asking for her telephone number. I was getting worried. She did not come to the Chat Room on the third day either. I asked every member whether they had seen her, but no one had. Now my worry was full blown and at the same I was getting angry at her for not leaving me any messages.

This evening, when I reached my home from work, Amin, the youngest brother of the girl that just died, was waiting for me at the gate. His face was solemn. I know he still misses his sister. In his hand, there was a letter.

"My sister wanted me to give you this letter" he said and left. I was surprised. I did not know that girl or even her name, and yet here I was holding a letter from her to me.

With much puzzlement, I opened her letter.

"Dear Hadie". I was surprised she knew my name.

"By the time you read this letter, I will be no longer in this world. My cancer finally defeated me. I wish I had more time to know you better and spend some real time with you. Not just in our virtual world. For the past few months since I knew you in our Chat Room, you made my life richer, more bearable. For the first time, I asked "Why me?". Why did I have to endure this disease when finally I found someone who was fun and understanding and I wish I could love forever.

Hadie, finally I am brave enough to say, I LOVE YOU. I wish I could say it in front of you, but I was too much a coward to say it before. I love you and I wish you would meet a woman that will love you back. Do not close your heart. Be the man that I know you can be.

Good bye dear.

Amira aka Cancergirl"

Her letter dropped from my hand. My tears were flowing down my cheek. How I wished things were different. How I wished we had been brave enough to say what was in our hearts, and had spent the last few months together or even a few minutes. How I wished I could hold her hands even for a few seconds and say everything would be be okay and that I love her. How I Wish.

~~~~~~ Chapter 2 ~~~~~~
That was yesterday.
When she needed him the most, he was not there for her. She knew she was being irrational. It was not his fault that he was not there when her parents had broken her dreams. It was not his fault that he was leaving when they had promised to study in the same university. It was not her parents’ fault that they were poor. It was not her parents fault too that she was the first born. It was not her parents faults that she had to sacrifice her dreams for her other siblings.
She understood all those things, but she could not stop her tears from flowing. Last night she was too numb to feel anything. She did not shed a single tear though her heart was shredded into tiny pieces. After listening to her parents, she just laid on the bed that she had to share with her two sisters, stared at the ceiling, numbed to the world. She did not sleep, not even a wink
His voice reminded her of the heartache. She knew that she had to tell him somewhat, but not now. Without consciously thinking where she was going, Lina found herself at the river bank. Her secret place whenever she wanted to get away from the rumbustious noise of her siblings. The special place where she would spend countless hours reading her books and dreaming of a better future. No one knew this place. Not even Hakim, well maybe she did told him once. But she never share it with him. This place was hers.
"Lina, what is wrong?" Suddenly she heard Hakim's voice.
"How do know you this place?" Instead of answering him, she diverted the question with a question of her own. She tried to sound piss off instead of teary.
"You told me about it. Remember." Hakim said.
"Yes .....  but I never tell you exactly where it is". She pretended to tidy up the small space and avoided looking at Hakim.
"I followed you once, just out of curiosity and to make sure that you are safe". That was Hakim. He never intruded.
"Lina, I am sorry I did not tell you about my parents' decision to send me to UK. I know we made a promise to study together. But, they insisted that I study there with my brothers. You know how it is with Dad. Nothing can move him once he made a decision. It would be much easier to move a mountain than trying to change Dad's mind." Hakim's voice was a bit distance, like he was not there with her. He kept on shuffling his feet back and forth.
Lina did not say anything. What could she say? Both of them were paying for their parents' decisions.
"You know, five years are not that long. We can always send mails to each other" Hakim tried to reassure her. But there was a tremble in his voice.
After a pregnant silence, "I need to go Lina. I wish I can spend some more time with you and talk to you. But, there are a lot of things need to be done and packed. Mom insisted to have a sending off party this week at Grandma's house. So we are going to travel back to our hometown tomorrow. I will see you again before I fly off to the UK." Hakim waited for a few minutes for Lina to say something, but when she did not say anything, he left.
After she was sure that she was alone again, the tears trickled down her cheeks. Her body was wrecked with her silent sobs. She had a good cry. When there was no more tears, she made a vow to herself that no matter what, she would go a university one day. With that silent vow, she harden her heart and accepted her fate. After looking at this special place for one last time, because she knew deep in her heart, this would be the last time that she would be here, she left. She needed this place when she was a child with idyllic dream, and she left it as a grown up with heavy burdens on her shoulders.
She met Hakim one last time before he left for his study. It was just a brief meeting to say goodbye. He promised to write to her, she mumbled something. However, Hakim seemed too preoccupied with many things that he seemed to take her words as a promise too.
On the day Hakim left for UK, she had gone to the City to attend a walk-in interview to work in a factory. That day their life changed irrevocably.
~~~~~~ Chapter 1 ~~~~~~

“Lina, wait up”.  Lina stopped dead in her tracks. With a heavy heart, she waited for Hakim to catch up.

“Where are you going? What’s the rush?” Hakim asked her. She did not know how to answer him. How could she? There was no answer.

“Hey, are you crying?” He sounded confused.

“Emm. I need to go now. My Mom needs me to baby sit for my brother and sisters. I will talk to you later” She did not wait for his response. She did not want him to see her tears. She was walking as fast as she could without seeming to run away from him.

Hakim was her best friend, her love. But today, she could not talk to him. She could not tell him about her parents’ decision which had broken her dreams into a million tiny pieces.

She had known Hakim since she was in kindergarten. That was fourteen years ago.  Hakim’s parents had just been transferred from another state and in the middle of the year. He was a withdrawn child at first. He kept to himself and did not talk to the other children for several weeks after he arrived, whereas Lina was a sunny child.

However, they became friends fast. Lina was always the mischievous one was getting them into all kinds of trouble, but Hakim did not seem to care. When they were in their secondary school, Lina would always be the top student, but Hakim just barely passed all his examinations. He was not interested in studying. Most of the time, he seemed bored, but she knew that he was very smart. Maybe, he took things for granted because he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. But he was never snobby to her, and always generous to their friends.

In their secondary school, Lina and Hakim were in different classes. She would always be in the "special class" due to her high scores, but Hakim would always be in the lower class. Despite the different classes, they always sat together at recess and walked home together after school. In their last year of secondary school, Hakim was pressured by his parents to study extra hard so he could study in the United Kingdom just as all of his brothers’ had. Lina, on the other hand, had to get top scores so she could apply for a scholarship. She knew that would be the only way she can pursue her dream of studying medicine.

Yesterday morning, she received a letter from a local university offering her a scholarship to study in medicine. She was over the moon with the news. She could not wait to tell Hakim. She ran to his house but he was not at home. The maid told her that Hakim had gone to the City to settle his student's visa to the United Kingdom. Lina was heart broken that Hakim would still be going to the United Kingdom as planned, even though he had said he was not interested. Maybe he was being pressured by his parents again. The whole morning she was anxious to tell her parents on the good news from the university.

She finally arrived at her home. "Lina" Mom said as she opened the door. "Your father and I need to talk to you about something".  Lina did not like the sound of Mom's voice. She looked at her parents. Both of them looked glum. Her heart started to beat faster. Deep down inside she knew the news would not be good. She had noticed Mom had looked a little sad lately, and Dad had been avoiding her for the last few days

"Lina ....  your Mom and I have wanted to talk to you about you going to the university. You know that we love you very much. We always supported you, but ..." Dad's voice suddenly trailed off. Mom started to sniff.

"What are you trying to say, Dad?"

"Mom?" Lina looked at Mom pleadingly.

My Childhood Games

This blog was written because my friend Asmaa requested me to explain the two childhood games that I used to play. These two games were mentioned in her "comment" box of her blog Remember Your Childhood

The first game was "snake and ladder". It was a board game. My siblings and I used to play this board game at night before our bedtime. We used to squabble and cheat each other while playing this game. Sometimes, my parents were so fed up with us for bickering while we were playing that we were banned from playing it for a few nights. LOL.

Let me try to explain to you how we play this board game.

The objective of the game is to reach the end of the board game which is the square box contains the number 100. This is done by navigating the numbered boxes which sometimes being helped by a ladder but being hindered by a snake.

Besides the board game, you need a dice, and some "token or counters" to represent you on the board. The token can be anything but must be different from each other. This game must be played by at least two person.

The ladder in the board game means that you can "jump" from certain position to another, whereas if you land on a snake mouth, it means that you will be "swallowed down" to another box. Each player started on box 1. Each player takes turn by throwing the dice. The number on dice indicated on how many steps each player had to take on the board. We used to cheat each other by deliberately "skipping" certain boxed numbers especially if we know that we are going to land on the mouth of the snake.

The second game that I used to play was "congkak". It must be played with two players sitting opposite each other. It is a mental calculation game. In "congkak" there would be 14 holes; 7 on each player's side, and 2 holes which we call "home" for each player.

Let me try explain to you how to play congkak. The rules seem to be a little bit complicated , though actually they are not.

To play congkak, you need the congkak board (sometimes we just made the board by digging the lawn, hehehe, which made my Mom mad) and some marbles or pebbles or seeds.

Each player needs to control the 7 holes on their side and owns the "home" on their left side. Each holes have to be filled with 7 marbles except for "homes" which should remain empty. We would take turn to remove all pieces from our side by distributing all the pieces to each holes clockwise including the "home" except for the opponent's "home".

Both opponents need to start the game simultaneously. If the last marbles falls into an occupied hole (hole with marbles in it), then all the marbles would be removed and be distributed into other holes as before.

If the last narbles falls into an empty hole on our side,  we could "captured" all marbles of our opponent that directly opposite of that hole. To "capture" opponent's marbles, we have to at least go through our "home" first.

If the last marble falls into our home, we earn another turn, of which we can start from which ever hole we want from our side.

If the last marble falls into an empty hole on our opponent side, we would lose our turn.

A player needs to "pass" his/her turn to play when ever if (s)he has no marble on his/her side of the board.

The game ends when there is no marble left on each side of the board. The game won by a player that has the highest number of marbles in his/her "home".

This game is testing individual mental calculation as well as focus. Because, believed me, if lose focus and cannot count, you would be cheated by an opponent. LOL. That what I used to do. Hehehe, by skipping of dropping a marble in a hole. We cheated each other by doing that, and which bickering and squabbling ensured.

I missed those moments and those games. Nowadays, kids are playing with their tabs, iPads and laptop. Even though most of the times we squabbled and bickered with each other, but those moments were the best. Hehehe... this reminiscent really made me feel like a Granny.

Hey Guys

I was reading an interesting article just now, and I was laughing so hard that I think I have to share this with you guys.

This is about some spelling errors and poor use of English which can result in really big embarrassment and sound rude in some cases. I have to apologise well in advance if some of you found it a bit crude, but you have to admit that maybe these kinds of mistakes we made in our daily lives and we did not realised them.

I have no affiliation with the websites linked in here, or their contents. The images are related to the topic, but are for entertainment purposes only. Enjoy them. Look at the the mistakes, and most important of all, try to avoid repeating the same mistakes. LOL. That advice is for me too.

Practising English Online

I wrote this blog based on Tara's Practising English Online Challenge. I've added some information and made some amendments from my original blog.

Years ago, I stumbled upon EC when I was looking for an English Chat Room to alleviate my boredom. I met many good friends, but at that time, not many English Teachers or native English Speakers joined the Chat Room. When I re-entered EC somewhere in October last year, EC had changed. I found out many English Teachers and also native English Speakers who were willing enough to chat in the main room.

Learning English through EC is hard. However, I realised that there are many ways for English learners to practice and improve.

English Main Chat Room.

Though I know it must be hard for some of the English Teachers or native English Speakers to correct most of the sentences in the main especially in a crowded room, I found out that they were always willing to answer any questions with regards to English, even some silly questions. If you were lucky enough, you maybe able to ask them some English questions in private message. However, I am only comfortable in doing that after talking to them in the Main Room for a period of times and when I know they are comfortable to help me. Never pushes them to assist you because that is not their obligations.

Blogs

I must admit for the first few months when I re-joined EC, I did nothing except chatted in the Main Room. I was one of the people who said "I don't read blogs. I don't do blogs". But, my friend introduced me to a blog by asking me to read and comment on her article. It took me a while to finally read her article. And it took me much longer to put a comment on her article. At that time, I did not feel comfortable to put my thoughts into words which was ironic since I chatted (text) a lot in the Main Room

Slowly but surely, I started to read blogs from my friends. I only felt comfortable to read and comments on blogs written by my friends that I have chatted in the Main Room. This was because I know that what ever comments that I may write in their blogs, they would surely accept it. At that time, I did not read or comment blogs from "strangers".

Then, out of the blue, I thought to myself, why didn't I write a blog too? I had some ideas, but I was not too sure where to start. After I wrote my first blog, I did not post it immediately. Instead I sent it to my friend and asked her opinion whether my blog was good enough for me to post it. After she assured me that it was good, it took me a much longer time to finally post it in EC. Reading the first comment; even though it was from my friend was really awesome. Then "strangers" started to comment on my blog. The feelings were indescribable.

By this time, I felt confident enough to put my thoughts into words. Lets just say that I was bitten by the "writing bug". Though no one made any corrections to my blogs, I felt good. When I started writing, it made me re-look at my grammar. I know my grammar was horrendous. I started to pay particular attention to it. It made me take more concerted effort to re-learn it. Once, I told a native English teacher, that it seemed I need to toss away my understanding on the English grammar, he just assured me that what I need was to revise my understanding on them and gave me the link in EC to re-study it. So, my next project in EC is to re-learn my grammar.

And I was really lucky that for last blog, a very helpful English teacher had really put his effort to help me correct all my mistakes. And I hope I learnt from all the mistakes.

Forum

When I did not have too much idea on what to write, I put a topic of discussion in a Forum. I found this was a more effective way of getting members to participate as compared trying to put a topic in a crowded Main Chat Room. I even managed to "force" some unwilling members to write something in my discussion since some of them were not comfortable to write a blog.

Speaking

I must admit I do not like to speak. I was fortunate enough that English is the language of communication in my Company. Thus, I am used to speak in English. However, at the moment, I seldom speaks with other EC members, though I did tried it a few times.

On-line Free Classes

Due to time difference, I never managed to catch an on-line free class offered by one of the most helpful English teacher in the Chat Room. However, he had offered the video recordings of all the classes of which I found out were useful. Hopefully, one of these days, I would be able to join and participate in his class.

Challenges

Participate in all kinds of challenges in EC, be it writing challenge or photo challenge because these challenges required everyone to at least write a simple description.

Comments

I found out that putting "Comments" in members' blogs, forums and photos was also a good practice in trying to put my thought into words. I may not have any ideas what to write on my own, but reading and trying to understand other members' ideas was a fun way to practice.

Practising English Online is a hard work. I think every learners needs to find a medium in which (s)he is more comfortable, whether it is just chatting in the Main Room, writing blogs, putting a topic of discussion in a forum, speaking with various members, writing comments on others' blogs, forum or photos, or joining online free classes. What ever it is, do not lose focus on the main reason(s) of why (s)he joined EC in the first place. Forget the difference of ideas or ideologies, just try to learn something, from someone out there.

These are the link of all my blogs and forum of discussion that I have written so far.

Many of you that may know me in here (EC Chat Room) know that the most strenuous exercises that I do are chewing my food and blinking my eyes. I am not an outdoor person. I would rather read books or just sleeping than walking in the park under the hot burning sun.

So I was surprised even myself when a group of my friends invited me to join them climbing the Mount Kinabalu in Sabah and I said a BIG YES. It happened in 2007. I know.... I know ... you are going to say "But Noas, that was centuries ago". But it was really a momentous decision for me. I never try such activity before.

Before I jump and tell you guys about my experience (well, more like crawling than jumping), let me tell you a little bit about Mount Kinabalu and why I said it was a momentous decision for me.

Mount Kinabalu is located in the Sabah - East Malaysia or Borneo. At the last measurement, its elevation at the highest point which is Low's Peak is 4,095 meters or 13,435 feet (it was believed that the mountain is alive and getting higher every year). It is the 20th most prominent mountain in the world and the first recorded ascent was in 1858 by Hugh Low and Spencer St John.

So as you can see, it is indeed a very high mountain, and for me who never even climb an ant hill before, it was really a crazy decision to make.

However, after making such decision, I know I need to do some preparation for such climb. My face became a permanent feature in the gym. I did various exercises of which to my "such expert" study gathered from various articles and sources would help me for such arduous climb. For the next four months, I did more exercises than I ever did for my whole life. And I thought to myself that I was so ready to face anything. "Bring It On" I said so to myself.

On the first day, after about three hours flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu, our group went to Timpohon Gate at the Kinabalu Park. We slept in one of the hostels there. The next morning we had to register with the Park's Office and were given number of which we need to keep and re-register after our descent. At the registration we met our mountain guides and porters.

My porter was an older lady and I was a bit reluctant to give her my small bag for her to carry. In the bag were some clean clothes, fresh socks, gloves, torch light and some food. I only carried a bottle of water and some chocolates for the first part of the climb. Our mountain guides advised us to buy a wood stick for our climb of which can help us in certain parts of the climb.

After such formalities, we started our trek. I was as happy as a lark. The climb was such a breeze, or so I thought. It started with a downhill through the rain forest. I really enjoyed the smell of such freshness of the jungle, the sounds of various birds and insects. Every few meters, there would be a sign that indicated the progress of everyone.

Little by little, I noticed that I was lagging behind some of my friends. My breath was getting heavier, though, I do not feel any tiredness in terms of my leg. My guy partner, we were advised to climb with at least one partner, kept on encouraging and motivating me. He matched his steps with my small steps. It seemed I was having high-altitude difficulty in breathing. By this time, the dense rain forest had turned into wind-driven alpine terrain and vegetation. My bottle of water and chocolate seemed to be such a heavy burden.

Ad mist all these, I saw few porters with various things such as building materials, gas tank, vegetables and such climbed through the trek with such an ease. Thank God there are a few resting places about a few kilometers along the trek. Even though the climb was hard due to the high altitude, I still can appreciate the flora and fauna found along the way. The changes of scenery from dense Tropical rain forest to alpine vegetation were really awesome.

After roughly about three and half hours climb, finally my guy partner and I reached Laban Rata. This is the base camp before we ascent for the final part of the climb. At Laban Rata we just relaxed and enjoying the view. Our mountain guides informed us that we will start our final ascent for roughly 8 km to the peak at about 1.30 am. Now I know why we need the torch light. We were advised to sleep early and be ready on 1.00 am. After all those hard climb, I do not need to be dragged to the bed.

After some briefing and advised by our mountain guides, at roughly 2.00 am, with the cold and dark night, we started our second phase of the climb. The final 8 km or more, are all granite terrain. There is no more vegetation in sight. The climb was done slowly and silently. Once in a while our guides will made a round and asked everyone on our conditions. We followed a white rope which was anchored to the granite which acted as a trail "bread crumbs" marker as well as to be used when we need some support to ascent.

The ascent was really rough not only because it was pitch black, but it was drizzling at some part of the mountain which made the granite a little bit slippery. At about 200 more of less meters, some of our members decided not continue on due to shortness of breath. I was determined to make it to the top, no matter what. Finally, at about 6.00 am, I reached the highest point; Low's Peak. I made it. I cannot describe how I felt at that moment. Looking at the yonder, I can see lights twinkling from as far as Kota Kinabalu which was about 90 km away.

The morning was a bit foggy due to the drizzle. My teeth was chattering, but I felt so humbled but at the same time proud because I never thought I can accomplished such feat. The feelings were indescribable. However, I cannot stay too long at the top due to the small space and every climbers wanted to be on that top.

After some time, we started slowly for our descent. Even though now it was very bright, the descent was more difficult due to steep inclination which made it more slippery. But, as before, our mountain guides will walked back and forth to ask everyone's conditions and made sure we were okay.

After reaching Laban Rata and checking out from our dorms, we had our lunch in the restaurant there and take some little break before our final descent. After lunch, finally we made our descent. Though the ascent to the top was hard, the descent was harder especially with the constant drizzle. I had to watch every steps I made because a small mistakes may resulted in a disaster and may left your face permanently etched on the steps of Mount Kinabalu.

I must admit that I was one of the last members of my group. There were a few more girls behind me, so I do not feel so helpless. By this time, I asked my guy partner to go ahead and leave me. I just want to feel my miseries on my own. He left when he was assured by one of the mountain guides that he will make sure I will be okay since they were a few more of us at the back of the pack.

By this time, I told the guide, please.. please ... I do not ever want to climb the mountain again. He tried to cheer me up with various tales, but I think by that time, I was mute and dumb. I just want to roll down the mountain. At one of the resting hut, he asked me to stop and let him put some bandages on my knees as support. It helped a little. After that, we started again with our small steps, well my small steps, of the descent. Sometimes he would hold my hand to ensure my steps were firmed at some of the treacherous steps and terrain. I was really grateful for that support.

Finally, I saw the gate of the Kinabalu Park. I was so relieved at that moment, I think I can even jump of joy. The few meters back to the Kinabalu Park Office was a breeze. Well not that as breezy as normal, but comparing to the crawls that I had gone through, the walk was breezy.

After registering and giving back my number the Park Duty Officer, it marked the end of my adventure. In the evening, we were back in Kota Kinabalu and stay an over night in a hotel there. Our flight back to Kuala Lumpur would be in the evening of next day. Some of us went for massage, but I was advised not to have it as not to exaggerate my muscle pain. In the morning, I was aching all over and at places that I never thought I had before. But my friends and I were determined to spend our last day in Kota Kinabalu by enjoying the City and eating its famous seafood. By this time, most of us were walking like a penguin. We waddled rather than walked. And most of us were still using the wood stick as support.

The local people seemed so used to watch people waddled into their shops with sticks that their greetings would be "Bila turun - or when did you descent?". During our lunch, most of us said that this was to be our first and last climb of the Mount Kinabalu. I was one of them. I do not think I can endure those descent and pain again.

I waddled for about a week after my climb even after a good massage. I thought I was really prepared for pain and every thing. But, I was not. The mantra during that period was; "No more, no more".

However, looking back at that experience, and knowing what I know now, some of my friends were talking of trying to climb it one more time. And, yes, surprisingly, I said, YES, if any of them want to try it again, I want to join. Though the plan is yet to be drawn, I am not surprise if in the near future, once again I will be on top of Mountain Kinabalu.

My Formula One Diary - Race Day

This is my last entry for My Formula One Diary 2013. Today is the Race Day. Hooray.

Day One : 21.03.2013 (Read here)

Day Two : 22.03.2013 (Read here)

Day Three : 23.03.2013 (Read here)

Race Day : 24.03.2013

WOW. Race Day. I hope today would not end as late as yesterday.The morning was a bit quiet since the Formula One Race would be in the afternoon. However, there were three Support Races before that. The spectators just trickled in, and not a lot of them in the morning. I ended up spending my morning chatting in the Main Room. And teased a few members about the "umbrella girls".

The Support Races were a bit chaotic due to some small accidents. Nothing major, thank God. And so far, the sun was shining. But seemed the dark cloud was coming together with the people. It was getting darker with more people coming into the track.

The celebrities and Royalties started to come about two hours before the Race started. Hmm. Josh Hartnet looked better than in his films. LOL. Kimora Lee Simmons looked stunning. (Names dropping in here. hehehe).

This year's Opening Ceremony was a bit different from the previous years. No more cultural show, instead it was a War Dance by the students from the National Army University.

The controlled chaos which associated with Formula One started after the Opening Ceremony. It was really an awesome experience to be able to a small part of those chaos.

The rain started well before the Race even started, thus the Teams put up tentage-like roof on the grids to protect the cars. They were so hideous. LOL. At 4:00 p.m., the Race started. The Teams went off to good start. However, Alonso had to retire due to technical problem. Poor Alonso since he had a good qualifying result yesterday.

The Race itself as usual nothing much to enjoy. But seemed this year, the pit had more accidents than the track. Suddenly, I heard a loud laugh from the Stewards room. It seemed that Hamilton had went to the McLaren's pit instead of Mercedes Petronas' Pit for the change of tyres. For Formula One uninitiated, Hamilton was McLaren's driver last year. That was funny.

There was also another incident in the Pit; the FIA called it "unsafe release". The driver was called to see the Stewards after the race and was fined Euro10,000.00. Due to major incidents or protests from Teams, the Official Result was released early.

In the meantime, the Teams and their crews were busy packing their cars. Whereas the various parties of Formula One background teams such as Communications, Access System, Timing System and all were also busy dismantling various equipment and system. They would work the whole night through until everything was ready to be shipped. It was really amazing looking at the way they worked because bye tomorrow, everything would be back to normal as if there was no Formula One.

Another Formula One chapter for me had ended. It was really fun to do something totally different from my daily work routine. This signifies the end of this year's diary. Thank you for reading.

The photo on the left is Mark Webber and the photo at the bottom is Kimi Raikonnen. These photos are for the girls of EC to enjoy :-D (You know who you are) LOL

My Formula One Diary - Day Three

Again, this is the continuation of My Formula One Diary 2013.

Day One : 21.03.2013 (Read here)

Day Two : 22.03.2013 (Read here)

Day Three : 23.03.2013

I was expecting things to change in Day Three. Normally drivers would push their cars to the limit to get the best grid's positions in the Qualifying Rounds.

In addition, Saturday was also the start of Celebrity Spotting. Today was no exception. I saw Michelle Yeoh (James Bond's heroine and a Malaysian) with her partner - the famous Jean Todt.

The morning started with a Support Race event. However, there were not many people on the track. After the Support Race, the Practice Session 3 (P3) started. Nothing untoward happened. What a bore. LOL.

Thank God I brought along a story book. I managed to catch up on my neglected Jo Nesbo's Nemesis, though it was still a long way to go. I managed to learn a new word from that novel which totally floored me : somnambulant - which means walking as if or while sleeping.

I tried to find a bald man to take his picture especially for Mickey, but surprisingly, unsuccessful for the whole morning. Hopefully, my luck will turn to the better in the afternoon.

Qualifying Session started with a bang for Sutil. Qualifying One (Q1) went smoothly, well not to some of the cars and drivers, but in term of race, it was smooth. However, for Qualifying 2 (Q2) it was not. Roughly three minutes before Q2 ended, it was raining, again. The teams decided to sit it out and just change their tyres to Intermediate.

The whole Qualifying Three Session (Q3) was done in the drizzle. For me it was only a drizzle, but Chris - one of the Stewards Secretaries said as far as their concern it was raining. It went smoothly, I thought.

Hmmm. I was wrong. A few minutes after Q3 ended, the Chief Stewards came over to the room and had a conversation with both Stewards Secretaries and discussed on F1 Rules. I do not feel so optimistic anymore. After quite lengthy discussion, a summon was issued to Kimi Raikonnen and Nico Rosberg to see the Stewards. One of the perks of being the Assistant to Stewards Secretaries was to be able to see a few naughty drivers up close.

After a lengthy closed door discussion with both drivers and their team representatives, a decision was made. I hope I would not see or type the word "impede" on the Race Day tomorrow. Poor Kimi Raikonnen was penalised three grids down.

When I was writing this, the Official Time and Grid Positions are yet to be issued. The Technical Report is yet to be issued to all Teams. And it is already 8:00 p.m. I think my day is going to be long one today.

Hope on the Race Day tomorrow, everything will be smooth. And for Mickey, this last photo is especially dedicated to you.

My Formula One Diary - Day Two

This is my continuation of My Formula One Diary 2013.

Day One : 21.03.2013 (Read here)

Day Two : 22.03.2013

I can feel the excitement buzzing slowly. The people walked faster and the atmosphere seemed to be slightly electrified.

At 10:00 a.m., the first car went to the track to signify the start of Practice Session 1 (P1). Round, round and round it goes. The engine noise was deafening. Normally I would bring a story book during these practices to kill the time, but this year I had totally forgotten about it. A note to myself : "Please, please, please bring a story book tomorrow, otherwise my mind will go round, and round and round like those cars".

P1 ended with no incident, nothing interesting. Well, except for one penalty for speeding in the pit lane. The driver was penalised 2800 Sterling Pounds. That was just a peanut for some of the teams.

At 14:00 p.m., Practice Session 2 (P2) started. The drivers seemed to be getting the grip of the track and drove a bit faster. The debris from the tyres was flying all over the track. Beyond the yonder, the sky was getting a bit darker by the minutes.

About 35 minutes before P2 ended, the sky decided that it had enough and opened up. All the cars went to their pits and changed their tyres to Intermediate or Wet tyres. (Normally they just used Hard tyres).

However, it seemed that was the only excitement that I was going to get. P2 ended without any incidents or naughty boys being caught speeding in the pit lane.

Day Two ended early than usual since no incidents had happened. I took the opportunity to go to the Paddock area and was fortunate enough to be able to take some pictures of some of the drivers.

Looking forward for Day Three.
