Writing Prompt: Say or Tell?

Writing Prompt ~ Say or Tell?

Hi Roney,

I have to tell you exactly why I was doing the Math test with Matt besides me while teacher Roderick kept an eye on me all the time in the principal room this morning. As you know, last week  I was sick at my home and I asked to my mother to go  to the school to tell Mrs. Roderick I had a serious fever  and maybe couldn't  do my the test on Tuesday. Everything was fine, until Matt have tried to blackmailed to the principal about my failed plan to steal the test answers from the Mr. Roderick computer a few weeks ago. Matt told me to give him the correct answers for the History test, sending them to his mobile phone by next Wednesday, otherwise, he would snitch on me to the teacher about my previous intentions. I really was in a difficult situation! When I got over from my sickness and went back to school to attend classes on Tuesday, Mr. Roderick said that suspected somebody from our class had tried to break into his computer files. Our class was in total silence! In my mind I remembered my mother's sage words: "Never tell a lie to anyone, it's a bad behaviour!". So, I decided to take the blame and to be sincere with teacher Roderick. He was surprised, but, in the end, asked to me if somebody else had helped me out to invade his computer. I readily told Matt had supported and threatened to hand over the History test responses as well. Matt and me were took to the principal room. There, the principal said, "Why did you do all that?". "We're so sorry Mr. Clarkson" we said. Whereas Mr. Roderick told, "Both of you will answer a harder test as a punishment".

Best regards,

Daniel

  • Oi there,

Nice piece of writing. But there is an issue worth noticing:

I- he said to me = he told me - so with "to tell" there ought to be an addressee. There is no need to expose the addressee when we refer to telling stories, tales, jokes and alike because such actions usually have an audiance listenign to what is being said.

II - "to say" we usually use when we want to express that something was said but there is no direct addressee - He said that he was tired and wanted to rest. They said something that was hard to believe  BUT  they told us someting that was hard to believe.

When we quote somebody's words, we usually use "to say" - Tom said,"What a lovely day, how about going for a walk.

If the sentence is an order, request, threat - then we ought to use the apropriate words - "I said to mom to bring me some sandwiches" sound much better if we say - I asked mom to bring some sandwiches. Instead of saying - "The traffic warden said to me to leave the place I parked because no parking was allowed there" we would do better if we say - "The traffic warden ordered me to leave the place I parked because no parking was allowed there.

I hope that the examples I gave will be of any help to those learning engllish.
