National Day on Writing

I saw on the news a few weeks ago that the Philippine Postal Corporation, a government owned corporation that provides postal services in my country, launched a writing contest about the importance of handwritten letters to an individual. Letters which are delivered thru snail mail have declined for the past years, thus affecting the agency in terms of profit.

Technology advancement including mobile phone texting and access to Internet via email, instant messaging on Facebook, Gmail and Twitter has overshadowed the old habits of letter-writing. That is why the agency has come up a campaign to encourage people to use the postal services in sending their letters and greeting cards to their loved ones. As a blogger myself, I find this idea as a challenging opportunity to everyone especially to the students that tend to forget the essence of expressing their thoughts using a pen and paper.

I learned online that this campaign was also being observed and practiced in many countries particularly in educational institutions. Teachers usually inspire their students to be involved in writing contests. However, many students are still having a difficult time composing an essay because of gadget dependency. They rely too much on texts and chat abbreviations that result to poor writing skills.

On the other hand, I'm sure you'd agree with me that handwritten letters from friends and family are much exciting to read than the ordinary email message. These personal letters could be full of emotions, excitement and sincerity. They are like imprints to the heart, as well as serve as a remembrance to the recipient. I strongly believe that through this activity, a person can be creative and prolific as much as he or she wants to. As we all know, in ancient history letters were used as a powerful weapon to influence the masses. In my country, letters ( along with books and newspaper publications) were also used as instruments by our national heroes to revolt against colonialism.

While we keep ourselves busy most of the time, don't you think it'd be wise to write a letter (or even a blog) once in a while? If we get used to this idea or practice, it would serve as our own advantage especially when the time comes that we need to make a request, a complaint or a commendation to other people. Most importantly, if we are knowledgeable with this skill, it'd help us ace during job-hunting and report writing. Of course, we must always try to follow the rules of proper capitalization, spelling, punctuation and paragraphing to make our letters appealing and impressive.

In your opinion, do you think handwritten letters would be able to regain its popularity in the future? Why?

  • Hi, Onee!

How nice to see your unique comment here! That's an impressive handwriting of yours. It reminded me of my participation in Luci's writing challenge - a message written with our own hands! It's quite exciting to see the different handwriting of our fellow MyEC fanatics!

Thank you very much for your comment and for your effort to write and take a photo of your message! May handwritten letters around the globe regain its popularity in this time and age...

    Cheers!

  • Dear Ms. Fe!

Thank you so much for the compliment! That's music to my ears. I always believe that to be an effective learner, one must take some actions to aspire to be an educator even in a small possible way.

I agree with you that handwritten letter is exciting to read. There's always a personal touch in it! I hope things are working well with you...

    Take care,

    Robbie :)

  • You write so well in English.  You're not a learner anymore but,a teacher.  I'm ashamed of my own English writing.

As to handwritten letters, I also prefer to receive snail mail.  Though, I think only my old aunts now write handwritten letters because they don't know how to use a computer.  So, I still receive handwritten letters and cards from them.  Always, I'm excited whenever a mailman comes and called out my name!!!

  • Thank you for the info, Raj! I've already sent a request on Skype. Have a wonderful weekend! :)

  • Thanks, bro! I'd be glad talking to you over skype.:) You can find me there by: "ilovemyec".

  • @ Raj

That's a good point! More and more people are getting accustomed to smartphones to connect with their loved ones primarily because of instant messaging and cheap cost. Similarly, many people glued their eyes on their mobile phones rather than talking with their friends while dining out which loses the real meaning of socializing. :) I hope to talk with you via Skype. Lol!

Thank you very much for giving your opinion, Bro!

  • @ Daniel

I hope that handwritten letters would not be a thing of the past. But I'd like to think that those old letters we had would increase its value just like jewelries or silver coins. Thank you for giving your insights about this blog! :)

  • I don't wanna make little of handwritten letters, but, I think they are just kept in our hearts  in a very careful way. To tell my opinion, I think they will become like museum pieces in the future, after all, technology comes to us for benifiting humankind in some way. So, coming back to the past it could be a setback for society. But, I  want to highlight again that every human artefact that existed along  human history has its own worth. Handwritten letters take part in that history for sure! Some people tent to redeem them in a emotive way. Thanks for the discussion Robbie and see ya!

  • By the way, I'd love to send you a handwritten postcard if you drop your address. Let's have fun with it. :-)
