Expector's Writing Challenge: Modals

I still wonder about the use of "shall". It is rarely to be used. We use "should" (past form of shall) and "will" so often instead of "shall". As suggestion and offer,,

Onee: "Hi Expector, thanks for giving these tips on modals"

Expector: "Hi Onee, you're welcome. You could try to make a short dialog or paragraph" (suggestion)

Onee: "I will try. But it requires time a bit long for me. I guess you may get bored waiting this slow student" (probabilities)

Expector: "It's no problem. You have no time limit here, and I believe you can do your best" (ability)

Onee: "Thanks again, Expector. I wonder if I could do my best. Shall I bring you a cup of tea?" (ability and offer)

Expector: "That's very kind of you."

  • Anastasia,, thanks for coming and for your nice comment here. I'm trying to learn with fun. :))

  • Expector Smith,,

Thanks a lot for your compliment. :) Since I'm a little confused using "shall", I tried to use it. Yeah, I was doubt about it. But forced to use it because you said "shall" can be used to express suggestion.

So, now I got it. That kind of suggestion by using shall. Thank you, Expector. I have already fixed it. Nice challenge! :)

  • Good job, I don't use verbs "Shall - Should", as you said, because I believe that these verbs will spoil the sentences. Thanks for Sharing.

  • Good job, Onee! You have a great sence of humour!:)

  • @Onee-chan

Great use of the modals! I know it's not always so easy for learners to correctly use all of the modals, and a lot of people don't really enjoy learning English grammar.  So, I really appreciate your great work!

Could you try to use another modal instead of "shall" in this sentence: "You shall try to make a short dialog or paragraph"? English tips: The modal "shall" can be used to make suggestions: "Shall we go to see a film?" or "Shall I write a short paragraph?". The modal "could" is commonly used to make a suggestion: "You could try to write a paragraph just as Expector did."

  • Thanks, noaslpls

I think people who learn English a lot in speaking or use English speaking for the second language do not concern so much about grammar. They would say, it sounds good or not good.

Otherwise, I learnt a lot in grammar and reading, but just have practiced English here. I found that there are so much I have to learn more. Especially in vocabulary, speaking (chatting/ comment), and writing. Anyway, I wish to learn a lot from English speaker here.. :))
