  • I believe that to meet the challenges of our times, human beings will have to develop a greater sense of universal responsibility. Each of us must learn to work not just for oneself, one's own family or nation, but for the benefit of all humankind. Universal responsibility is the key to human survival. It is the best foundation for world peace.

  • Ghadir Khum, It was a place where people from different provinces used to greet each other before taking different routes for their homes.
In this place, the following verse of the Qur'an was revealed:
"O Apostle! Deliver what has been sent down to you from your Lord; and if you don't do it, you have not delivered His message (at all); and Allah will protect you from the people ..." (Qur'an). It was around noon time in the first of the fall, and due to the extreme heat in that valley,
On this day the Messenger of Allah gave to moslems long speech.
The following is a part of his speech which has been widely narrated by the Sunni narrators:
Then the Messenger of Allah declared:
"Do I not have more right over the believers than what they have over themselves?"
People cried and answered: Yes, O' Messenger of God."
The Prophet [s] held up 'Ali's hand and said:
"For whomever I am his Leader (mawla), 'Ali is his Leader (mawla). [In some narrations the word used was wali rather than mawla -with the same implication].
    The Prophet continued:
"O' God, love those who love him, and be hostile to those who are hostile to him."
These were the key parts of the speech of the Prophet. There are also more detailed versions of this sermon which are recorded by many Sunni authorities.
Immediately after the Prophet finished his speech, the following verse of the Qur'an was revealed:
"Today I have perfected your religion and completed my favour upon you, and I was satisfied that Islam be your religion." (Qur'an 5:3)
After his speech, the Messenger of Allah asked everybody to give the oath of allegiance to 'Ali [a] and congratulate him. Among those who did so was 'Umar b. al-Khattab, who said:
"Well done Ibn Abi Talib! Today you became the Leader (mawla) of all believing men and women."

    Proximity, from Claim to Action

Abu Hamzah narrates from Imam Baqir (PBUH), that Prophet Adam (PBUH) ordered Abel and Kane to make a sacrifice (1). Abel was an animal husbandman, and Kane was a farmer. Abel brought one of his best bulls to the place of sacrifice, and Kane chose one cluster from the worst of what he had farmed. The sacrifice of Abel was accepted, and Kane’s was not. (2) God has told their story in the Holy Quran that:

“And recite to them the story of the two sons of Adam in truth; when each offered a sacrifice (to Allah), it was accepted from the one but not from the other …” (3)

Then the Satan told Kane, “Abel’s sacrifice was accepted, but yours was not. If you let him alive, in the future his descendants will brag your descendants. So Kane killed Abel.

When Kane returned to Prophet Adam (PBUH), Prophet Adam (PBUH) asked him, “Where is Abel?” Kane replied, “I don’t know! You hadn’t sent me for his protection!”

Prophet Adam (PBUH) went to search for Abel, and found his corpse, and cried for him for forty nights. Then Adam (PBUH) asked God to grant him a son. A son was born for him, and he called him Hibbat Allah (the gift of God).

Prophet Adam (PBUH) liked him very much. When the time of his prophethood came to an end, God revealed to him, ”O Adam! The time of your prophethood came to an end, and your time is passed. Now, the knowledge that is consigned to you, with faith, the Great Name, and the inheritance of the prophethood must remain with your descendants. Give them to your son Hibbat Allah …“(4)

When Habbat Allah buried Adam, Kane came to him and said, “I saw that Adam granted his knowledge to you, and not to me. And this was the knowledge that your brother Abel prayed with it so his sacrifice was accepted. I killed him to prevent him from having a descendant to boast my descendants saying that we are the sons of the one whose sacrifice was accepted, and you are the sons of the one whose sacrifice was not accepted …”

The story of the sons of Adam (PBUH) contains precious lessons for us. Usually in life, we are compelled to sacrifice our belongings for the sake of our more valuable things; however, sometimes we sink into routine daily life to the extent that we forget our precious things. At a time our best time and wealth were devoted to our Beloved, but now we have either changed our beloved or our values…

    1. Qurban (sacrifice) is an action which causes the proximity to God.

    2. The sign of acceptance of the sacrifice of Abel was that a lightning struck the sacrifice and burned it. Then Kane made a house for fire. He was the first one who made fire temple and said that he worships fire so that it accepts his sacrifice.

    3. The Holy Quran, (5:27)

    4. The verse of the Holy Quran mention that after Abel was killed, Kane was wondering what to do with his corpse. In the mean time he learned to bury a dead person from crow.

    Serving for Islam

Nowadays, most historians study the lives of the Ahl al-Bayt (PBUT) merely from the confined aspect of their personal lives, and even out of the context of their time. On the other hand, some others study the lives of the Ahl al-Bayt (PBUT) from the political point of view, and evaluate their role in that regard. In fact, they even see the worship and the knowledge of the Ahl al-Bayt (PBUT) through the glass of politics.

There is a compromise between these two methods in which the lives of the Ahl al-Bayt (PBUT) is considered full of personal illuminations that transcend the borders of place and time, and deems them politically vast, compatible to the specific situation.

Although the majority of the Imams (PBUT) were not political rulers, all the kings and governors used to take refuge in them in all their difficulties, despite their continuous animosity towards the Imams (PBUT). Indeed, the Imams (PBUT) did not hesitate to serve Islam and rescue the nation from making mistakes. History has narrated us a good example of this issue in the case of Abdul Malik, the Umayyad caliph.

After Abdul Malik became the king, he was disturbed with the fact that the Romans used to depict the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit on paper. Therefore, he ordered the governor of Egypt to replace these depictions with the chapter of Tahwid (the 112th chapter of the Holy Quran)(1), and the 18th verse of its third chapter (2). When the Roman king became aware of the news, he wrote to Abdul Malik,” Making paper and what is depicted on it is the expertise of the Romans”.

When Abdul Malik read the letter, he did not respond to it, and even returned the gift the Roman king had sent with the letter. The very same incident was repeated several times, but Abdul Malik kept refusing the gift, even though the Roman king increased the gift every time. Eventually, the Roman king wrote to Abdul Malik,” Reverse the depictions on the papers to as it was, or I will order that your Prophet be insulted on the coins”.

When Abdul Malik read the letter, he became extremely angry, and since he did not come to a conclusion after discussing the issue with the Muslims around him, he asked for Imam Baqir (PBUH).

When Imam Baqir (PBUH) met Abdul Malik, he narrated the incident to the Imam (PBUH). Imam Baqir (PBUH) said to him,” Do not overreact to this issue, because it is simple for two reasons: First, the Almighty Allah (SWT) will not let the Roman king execute his threat of insulting the Messenger of Allah (PBUH&HP). Second, there is a solution to this problem”.

Abdul Malik asked,” What is the solution?”

Imam Baqir (PBUH) replied,” Call upon the artisans immediately and ask them to mint gold and silver coins with the 112th chapter of the Holy Quran on one side and the name of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH&HP) on the other. Also, engrave the city and the date the coins were produced on their sides”.

Then, Imam Baqir (PBUH) taught Abdul Malik the details of designing the weight of the coins, minting them, and weighing gold and silver coins, and ordered him to provide all the Muslims throughout the country with the new minted coins.

Abdul Malik followed the order of Imam Baqir (PBUH), and sent a message to the Roman king saying that “Allah (SWT) prevented you from doing what you intended; I did such and such in the Islamic nation, and your coins are valueless now”.

After this, some of the Romans told their king,” In this situation, you have to execute your threat”. The Roman king replied,” I sent him those letters to make him angry; because I was more powerful, and the Roman coins were common. However, I can not overpower him now; because the Muslims do not trade with Roman coins, and it is not possible to execute my threat now”.

In this manner, the suggestion of Imam Baqir (PBUH) has remained effective till now.
