These wild little yellow flowers are coltsfoots (or foalfoots in another variant). The leaves resemble a colt's foot in cross section – this is the reason of English name. The flowers, which superficially resemble dandelions, appear in early spring before dandelions appear. The bees look for subsistence (earn for living) with difficulty in early spring, so coltsfoots come to bees’ help – this plant is a good melliferous herb. These flowers have unusual Russian name – “mat-i-machekha”( “mother-and-stepmother”). They are called such name, because their leaves have different surfaces – first (from above) surface is hard and cold (as stepmother in fairy tales), second surface (from below) is soft and warm! The reverse side of coltsfoot’s leaves evaporate water feebler, then their obverse side, so reverse side of leaves is warmer, than obverse one – Russian name of this plant is the result of this reason.Flowers of coltsfoot appear in early spring, but their leaves - in summer only!
