The gates were built in 1017-1024 and were one of entrances to Kyiv at that time.

Thanks for the explanations, I was also confusing about Kiev and Kyiv. Just one question if you don't mind; can Ucranian people understand Russian and Belorussian?

Look, for example: Svitlana - in Ukraine, Svetlana - in Russian. Odesa - in Ukraine, Odessa- in Russian and so on. :)
