" The little prince " Chapters 18 & 19

The little prince crossed the desert and met with only one flower. It was a flower with three petals, a flower of no account at all."Good morning," said the little prince."Good morning," said the flower."Where are the men?" the little prince asked, politely. The flower had once seen a caravan passing."Men?" she echoed. "I think there are six or seven of them in existence. I saw them, several years ago. But one never knows where to find them. The wind blows them away. They have no roots, and that makes their life very difficult.""Goodbye," said the little prince."Goodbye," said the flower. After that, the little prince climbed a high mountain. The only mountains he had ever known were the three volcanoes, which came up to his knees. And he used the extinct volcano as a footstool. "From a mountain as high as this one," he said to himself, "I shall be able to see the whole planet at one glance, and all the people..."But he saw nothing, save peaks of rock that were sharpened like needles."Good morning," he said courteously."Good morning--Good morning--Good morning," answered the echo."Who are you?" said the little prince."Who are you--Who are you--Who are you?" answered the echo."Be my friends. I am all alone," he said."I am all alone--all alone--all alone," answered the echo."What a queer planet!" he thought. "It is altogether dry, and altogether pointed, and altogether harsh and forbidding. And the people have no imagination. They repeat whatever one says to them... On my planet I had a flower; she always was the first to speak..."

  • oh considering root and wind in this way was really a nice explanation! I mean considering a strong root as the one that a flower has in the desert and wind as events.

It looks you are thinking about that story word by word.
Let me think about a flower in a desert .What's her wealth ? her roots, her tender stem ,three petals and a vast desert around. She knows well the importance of water, even a drop of water is meaningful for her it means life. She's used only soil, sun and drops of water to make a life. She is reflecting the second stage of creation or second rule of God very well. "Being alive"!!. Are we thinking like her? Are we using everything around well ?? Do we know the importance of them well ? Do we have a developed root to get even a drop of life ?
When there is no root and there is no spacial resolution to get the essence of life so we let the wind of events takes us everywhere.

"I am all alone--all alone--all alone," answered the echo.
But if he said : " I'm not alone " what was the answer of echo ?
Sure it answered :" I'm not alone--I'm not alone --I'm not alone "
    Where he was shouting ?
"It is altogether dry, and altogether pointed, and altogether harsh and forbidding. And the people have no imagination. They repeat whatever one says to them" He thought.

I've read something in a professional book about human physiology:
" It is not important you are 15 or 95 years old .You are an old one if you couldn't change you habits."

Imagination (far from all social aspects )is one of the most important ability of us.
And Gabriel Garcia Marquez Letter :
....I would sleep less and dream more
...I would prove to men how wrong they are to think that they stop falling in love as they get older, since they actually start getting older as soon as they stop falling in love..
...I have learned that everybody wants to live at the top of the mountain, forgetting that is how we climb is all that matters.
...There is always morning where life gives us another opportunity to make things good.
...Nobody would remember you if you keep your thoughts secret.

The flower says because they don't have any roots, the wind blows them away.
What is the wind? And what are roots?
I think the wind is all of the events in our life. And root means power;such power that is gained by knowing ourselves ,our weak points, and the way to over come on them. That power to over come on all the difficulties ,external difficulties like natural events and internal difficulties that is our passions.
The whole sentence means because people can't stay against their passions and difficulties ,they go anywhere that the events take them.Because they aren't powerful enough to over come on them.
    "Good morning," he said courteously.

"Good morning--Good morning--Good morning," answered the echo.

As we know there is a rule in the world:any action has a reaction, exactly like that!
And if you think deeply, you will understand that this rule is true also in our lives.Every event that occures to us is a reaction to those that we have done before, bad or good!
And I think this paragraph refers to that rule. And maybe the last sentence wants to remind us another thing:
"I am all alone--all alone--all alone," answered the echo.
All of us at the end of this world are alone!
    God be with you!
