well,i can tell a story was happened 14 centuries ago...
..the prophet Mohamed invited his companions to lunch in house of his wife Aisha,and a food came from Om Salama house(one of prophet wives),Mohamed said eat,Aisha was making a food then she put it on the table and broke Om Salama vessel,the prophet smiled and said Aisha your mother is jalous then said eat from her food...
..and like this Mohamed fixed the problem of jalousy in the prophetic house bya simple manner even though his wife embarrassed him with his companions he didn't get angry but he just smiled and determined the case when he said your mother Aisha was jalous to confirm that Aisha if she made a mistake only she is the faithful mother...

Elise, I wonder no participant is acquainted with this factor, trust. It's main factor. As you said when two couples sleep together but the hearts of both have distance, consequently it widens the distance between two the bodies. The trust never comes overnights. For one or both have to sacrifice her/their ego all beloved friends everything just to make one another feel their importance to one another.
I think the key factor to failure and success of marriage is "TRUST".
From a person you don't know, ou becomes their friend,a life-long friend. You become the child of their parents. You become a mom/dad of their babies. You live with them in the same house, sleep the same bed. So, what will happen if you don't TRUST them anymore? No relationship can last, even marriage.
I challenge you to kindly let me down :) please feel free to throw out every think in your mind about the topic
