In 1992, a Japanese foreign student was shot to death by a man in the U.S. This tragedy was caused by mistakes. He, who was dressed up for Halloween, visited a man's house to get Halloween treats. But the man mistook him for a robber and said "Freeze". However he got closer to the man while laughing and said  "I have come to Halloween party", because he mistook "Freeze" for "Please" . At that time, he was shot to death by the man. This accident made Japanese people think about the U.S as a gun society.

Some similar accidents have occurred in the U.S. For example, a seventeen-year-old American boy was mistakenly shot by a policeman and died. When the policeman visited the boy's house, the boy had a Wii remote control in his hand. The policeman mistook it for a gun and shot him. It was a tragedy. When the policeman realized his mistake, he broke down crying. The boy was joining the Reserve Officers' Training Corps and his friends say "He was a good guy".

I think the U.S society allows people to shoot a gun easily. I think this is because people in the U.S assume everyone else is carrying a gun, so they think they must shoot others as soon as possible before they themselves are shot. What do you think about these accidents and gun society?

  • Hi, Onee-chan. Yes, they are very terrifying accidents.

  • Terrifying! :|

  • Hello, Mishaikh. Thank you for your comment. I hear most Americans say guns are not problem but violent humans. I think this is one of the reasons why strict gun control is not enforced in the U.S. However I hear as well some high school students in the U.S. push for gun control after mass killings by guns in their high schools.

  • Such incidents even are happening here in US frequently, still there are two opinion oppose to each other favoring gun and other one for the restriction.  But children are continuously being killed in schools, colleges and universities time and again. (Be noted these are not terrorist attacks, shooters and victims all are students.)

  • Hi, Rosemary. I agree with you. It is a tragedy as well. We must handle guns very carefully in order not to create tragedy.

  •   Ur blog have reminded  me of a saying " It's easy to get angry  , but to get angry  in the right level , right time  onow the right person  , that's  difficult  to do " I think we can apply this to using gun and weapons   we are humans  at the end  , some moments  are pitfalls  the can make real catastrophes  . Years ago a 13 boy shot his mom with a gun accidentally  and she was killed  . Can u imagine  how that boy is feeling  now  , how his siblings  are treating  him  . I  think he is living in a hell  because  of weapons  miscues  .

:) Happy to be  ur friend  Tam :)

  • Hello, Jeong Hojin. Thank you for your comment.

  • I am feeling very sad to read this article.

I think that the gun only must be used to protect oneself's life in the US.

If they do not, we can not protect our life and our neigbor's life.

So we have to make the guidelines that the gun shoot more strictly.

  • Hi, Rosemary. In Japan, self-defense is legally allowed, but excessive self-defense is not. For example, if someone hit you and then you slash him with a knife to defend yourself, it may be excessive self-defense.

  •    U are welcomed  Tam  , I have just remembered  legislation  in my country  about accidental  killing  I were discussing  with my friends   . In my country  even if it was proved that killing was for defense  the person responsible for  must serve  some years in jail  . I were arguing my friend  about this saying it isnt  fair in such conditions  . When she answered  me saying  this must be to prevent  the spread of killing under any  causes  , because  , some will use " self defense  " as a justification  for their misues  of weapons   . I wish if other members  can join our debate  here
