I'd like your opinion please! Are automatic spellcheckers (for your MyEC blog for example) a "good thing", or not? There are pros and cons, of course.
  • One pro is that it makes it dead easy for us.
  • One con is that we learn nothing because the machine does it for us.
What do YOU think?

  • Dear Mr.Joseph,
I think this poem is a good example of cons,in case having a spell checker.
I try to give my corrected version, but unfortunatly it won't be faultless either,(mading it without a spellchecker)

    I have a spelling checker.
    It came with my PC.

  • I checked this poem with some spell checkers that I found, and surprisingly there really were some few, that didn't pass it.. but none of them were actually able to find all mistakes. Or to make correct suggestions ;)

The simplest spell checkers are still the best ones.
  • Brilliant Kevin! Well found :))) And very funny too. According to Wikipedia, the original version of this poem was written by Jerrold H. Zar in 1992. Wikipedia also comments: "An unsophisticated spell checker will find little or no fault with this poem because it checks words in isolation. A more sophisticated spell checker will make use of a language model to consider the context in which a word occurs." Hmmmm. Really?

Would anyone like to correct Owed to a Spel Cheker in Kevin's comment?
  • Thanks for all your views and ideas. Keep them coming please.
  • why not having a spell check, sometimes we mispell a word and it was just a mistyping and you want everyone to understand or not.
  • I think it's practical and easier to check spelling on my EC.But this encourages laziness at the learners :they will never open their dictionaries and check spelling.
  • hi!

good thing because you will remember the right spell if there's someone or something (like spell checkers) correct the mistakes, and slowly you will learn how to spell.
  • I also think it is a good idea to have spell check at EC.. It will help me and EC member to know their mistakes on spelling.. sometimes we thought we spell it right and actually wrong..

but then again.. there's different between UK and US spelling..

  • Hi,
I think it is a good idea to add the option of spellcheking, but we should bear in mind that this option is meant to help us learn english rather than an option on whish we are to rely to present a blog post with no mistakes.
