Parts of Speech"

I tried my level best to describe English- Parts Of Speech the way I was taught when I was child with the intention to help the learner who are still struggling to understand the fundament of English.

There may be many examples which help the learner comprehend intricacies of the subject. The parts of speech is the most fundamental rule of English. The most of learners have been found reluctant to learn them. Every word that we utter is a part of speech which maybe Noun, Pronoun, Verb, Adverb, Adjective, Preposition, conjunction, and Interjection.

Why do we need to learn or to be familiar with parts of speech?

There are many words being composed in a sentence to make a proper sense. All words used in it have different properties or role just like all workers in an organization are apparently persons, but as per their job descriptions they play different roles such as managing director, director, manager, typist, poem watchman etc. They all perform their duties at their place and no one can take place of other. A managing director can't be replaced with a watchman nor is the director replaced by peon. Similarly, all the words have different role in a sentence as per their characteristics. A noun is replaced by noun. A verb is replaced by verb. Learning the placement of these terms in a sentence is called syntactical rules of the language.

1. Noun: a part of speech which describes the name of place, things, persons etc and is used as subject, object and compliments

There are five kinds of noun such as common noun, proper noun, collective noun, material noun, abstract noun. For instance, poet, Allama Iqbal, people, iron, ability.

2. Verb: a part of speech without case inflection, but inflected for tense, person and number, signifying an activity or process performed or undergone.

3. Adjective: a part of speech and is a describing word, the main syntactic role of which is to qualify a noun or noun phrase, giving more information about the object signified.

4. Pronoun: a part of speech substitutable for a noun and marked for a person.

5. Adverb: a part of speech without inflection, in modification of or in addition to a verb, adjective, clause, sentence, or other adverb.

6. Preposition: a part of speech placed before other words in composition and in syntax.

7. Conjunction: a part of speech binding together the discourse and filling gaps in its interpretation.

PS: I am not teacher nor am I interested in teaching English or any subject. I have taught English when I was in college. I believe I could describe it even better, but due to shortage of time I just described its importance. Please pardon me if I missed out something.

  • Oh, Arif, you did a great work here! You describe every part of speech very well. You say that you are not teacher, but, really, I tell you that I felt like this blog it is written by a teacher. Congratulations!

  • Abiba sis

The only way you may get over it is to peruse all about adverb, its kinds, usage etc thoroughly.

    Thank you for comment.
  • Onee sister

Well what I got from your comment is that you are not at home even at your first language. Actually, the meaning of a word helps us identify the class of word by the help of our first language. Familiarity with the terms of any language accelerates learning process. Thank you so much for encouraging and commenting.
  • Dearest brother,

I actually didn't care about parts of speech before. It made me complicated to understand English. Usually I had wrong perception between adjective or verb for some words. Since I have a dictionary which explains the part of speech of each word, it helps me a lot in learning English.

So, I agree with you that this fundamental of English is very important to be learnt for every learner. Well done for this blog, Arif! :)
  • Sir, Dara I am fine and around you in these days. Where is Hina? Thank for commenting.
