Read in English with Tara

TaraI love reading! One of my favourite stories as a child was Anne of Green Gables. This book was written for both children and adults to enjoy. In my opinion, these classics are the best types of books for adult English learners.

Anne of Green Gables is set in Canada (my country). Have you heard of Anne? She is a dramatic red-haired orphan who moves to a farm in Prince Edward Island. P.E.I. is a tiny province on the east coast of Canada. The classic itself is a bit difficult to read. It was first published in 1908. Did you know you can read English classics in easy English? Stepping Stones (Random House) offers an easier version of Anne of Green Gables. It is important to read at an appropriate level. If the text is too difficult, you won't enjoy the book. Many publishers have graded readers. These can help you improve your reading level.Would you be interested in reading an easy version of Anne of Green Gables with me? You can find a good deal online. There are other versions as well. Leave a message in the comments if you are interested in reading Anne of Green Gables with me.Here are some things we can do together:1. Practise reading aloud2. Practise using vocabulary3. Share favourite passages4. Discuss characters5. Watch the film, or try a more difficult versionTo listen to this post scroll up to the first recording in the music player.

  • Thanks for sharing the link, Tara! I'll check it out and read it. There seems to be a wedding in the last chapter in the series - I wonder if it's Anne and Gilbert's wedding.
  • Yes Anne is very loveable! Gilbert too. It continues in another story. Anne of Avonlea is the next story. I think there are 7 in the series. These are all in the public domain so you can find the full text online and read with an ereader. http://www.gutenberg.org/browse/authors/m#a36

  • Sorry for taking so long to get back to this blog. I've just read through the novel - a legible version by Clare West. I know I should have tried the original one, but I failed to find it.

Anne is lovable character - talkative and always gets into trouble. I'm curious to know if she and the smart Gilbert would finally get married. Maybe that's another love story. And, Anne and Tara are both English teachers:))
  • -I hope I can get this video,it's almost authentic with the book version.-
Can anyone help by sending a link to it?
  • Thank you Tara,it's really great!
I want to share here the photo of the house of the Green Gables, that I found on Twitter:

"..One of the most recognizable landmarks in all of Canada, Green Gables in Prince Edward Island..."-that's exactly, how I imagined the House of the Cuthberts:)

"After Anne of Green Gables was published in 1908, there was a steady stream of visitors not only to the island, but the actual Green Gables house. By 1936, the Canadian government made the house part of a national park and turned it into a museum. Green Gables is the heart of the Prince Edward Island National park, which also holds within its boundaries the red sandstone cliffs, beaches, dunes, meadows and groves that Montgomery described so lovingly in her books. "
  • Check this out: Anne of Green Gables on Twitter.
  • @Reiziuh: Yes it is very challenging. The lower level one isn't as good, but you can at least learn the story first. Then you can try the more challenging version.

I just realized that you can download it for free for a mobile device. I added it to my iPad.
  • @Monika Great share! I will read it with my daughter. We love reading "classics" together.
