POETRY

Hi my dear friends in this great platform, MyEnglishClub! ^_^

For the whole last night, I’d been dizzy since something uncomfortable happened. (No, not the earthquake happened in Aceh, I’m in Surabaya, I hope everything there will be back to normal).

This morning, dear Luci woke me up with his blog about poem. Don’t worry Luci, I’m not a sensitive girl, I’m logical. :p I won’t eat you alive, otherwise I’m afraid you’ll get eaten…. *kidding… :D Smiles… ^^

I’m sorry to say that I need to write this blog since my comment would be long and I intend other members especially who feel discourage will read this too. :)

First, I will introduce myself that I WAS a student in a language class in Senior High School, so I learnt literature more than students in science class. But, I took Physics in the college. Strange?? But it is the fact. (Ok, that’s not important to tell actually) :D

Second, I’m NOT a PROFESSIONAL fluent English Teacher nor English Native Speaker. (So, people may think my words are not reliable… :( , it’s fine) I can still breath :)) :D

Hmm….I don’t like long blog, so I will make it brief. This is also for our knowledge. ;)

I learned poetry in my language. Several times I made poems to be read in the school, also lyrics to be yelled when I was a newbie at the Institute Technology. :D Well, it is about how to deliver a message in the term of poem. It is said there are many kinds of poem. Sure here I will give you information from internet, but that's not different from what I've learned. I won’t explain the detail, you can visit this link...

Many types of poem are with the rules. From the strict rules to the easy rules. But you may miss one type of poems. This is called a Free Verse Poem

Definition of Free Verse

While it is easy to think that poems have to rhyme, free verse is a type of poetry that does not require any rhyme scheme or meter. Poems written in free verse, however, do tend to employ other types of creative language such as alliteration, words that begin with the same sound, or assonance, the repetition of vowel sounds.

Some people find free verse to be a less restrictive type of poetry to write since it doesn't have to employ the form or the rhyming schemes of other types of poetry.

The free verse form of poetry became popular in the 1800s, and continues to be popular among poets even to this day. TS Eliot was one of the masters of the form, as best seen in his poems The Waste Land and The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock, which begins:

Let us go then, you and I,
When the evening is spread out against the sky
Like a patient etherized upon a table;
Let us go, through certain half-deserted streets,
The muttering retreats
Of restless nights in one-night cheap hotels
And sawdust restaurants with oyster-shells:
Streets that follow like a tedious argument
Of insidious intent
To lead you to an overwhelming questionÉ.
Oh, do not ask, ÒWhat is it?Ó
Let us go and make our visit.

Free Verse is a form of Poetry composed of either rhymed or unrhymed lines that have no set fixed metrical pattern. The early 20th-century poets were the first to write what they called "free verse" which allowed them to break from the formula and rigidity of traditional poetry. The poetry of Walt Whitman provides many illustrations of Free Verse including his poem "Song of Myself".

Free Verse - A Free Verse Poem does not follow any rules. Their creation is completely in the hands of the author. Rhyming, syllable count, punctuation, number of lines, number of stanzas, and line formation can be done however the author wants in order to convey the idea. There is no right or wrong way to create a Free Verse poem

Here I found some examples for you.

America by Allen Ginsberg (Sorry, it's too long to copy here..:p)

Fog by Carl Sandburg

The fog comes

on little cat feet.

It sits looking

over harbor and city

on silent haunches

and then moves on.

A Birthday Poem by Ted Kooser

Just past dawn, the sun stands
with its heavy red head
in a black stanchion of trees,
waiting for someone to come
with his bucket
for the foamy white light,
and then a long day in the pasture.
I too spend my days grazing,
feasting on every green moment
till darkness calls,
and with the others
I walk away into the night,
swinging the little tin bell
of my name.

William Carlos Williams is one of the most important American free verse poets, along with Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson, Ezra Pound and T. S. Eliot.

This Is Just To Say
by William Carlos Williams

I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox

and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold

Barely tolerated, living on the margin
In our technological society, we were always having to be rescued
On the brink of destruction, like heroines in Orlando Furioso
Before it was time to start all over again.
There would be thunder in the bushes, a rustling of coils,…….
The whole thing might not, in the end, be the only solution……..
Came plowing down the course, just to make sure everything was O.K.…

  • Dear BatuhanSereneShobaNotAClue, and Risty.... Thank you so much for your supports by pressing the like button. It means a lot, lots, and lots to me. Wish you perfect December Holiday! ^_^

  • MARY dear,,

I know about people will like and dislike. However, why I should write here was because I SHOULD TELL THE TRUTH, the theory that I've learned so far, and I confirmed that again. Those are not an opinion anymore. To me, language is more complicated than mathematics. :D

Agree with you that styles only show the differences. "to go out from your comfort zone and TRY different things" Of course this is also my slogan... AND I always learn on how to invite people by seeing the characters.

Thanks a lot for your concern and support. I appreciate a lot. :)

  • Dear Luci,

Thank you so much for your wise answer. I can understand and really appreciate your intention. But as you see, the fact that some others grabbed your blog as offensive weapon,, I think the only problem was the title. You should have been a bit slow down... ^^

Well, about the definition. It is not only poetry. Most description of the words in the dictionary should be about a certain thing. However, if we see them in different/ specific field. They need further explanation and comprehension, and almost, there are always exception, not only in this matter.

I really know you're supporting my challenge. Thanks a lot for that. :)

  • Onee, I don't really know how have been these 'reviews' of the poems that people have been so kind to share with us (you say: "if some other members' poems are questioned with those language"... as if they have been rude and vulgar?) but what I'd like to remark here is that when you show your work, there'll be always people who will like and people who won't and there are two ways of dealing with reviews: 1) To feel offended and take it on the defensive or 2) To try to get that review as a way to improve yourself or to explain yourself if you think that review can be refuted.

"You said "I think Luci's intention is just to make people here to improve their poems and encourage them to try to write a poem with rhyme" Does it mean poem/poetry would be better with rhyme??"

Onee!!! I'm sorry but... How the hell you understand that in what I said???!!  :/

better?? worse??? good?? bad??? Oh my!! Plz!! Some people here should get rid of this really bad habit of labeling everything as better/worse/good and bad! It's so frustrating! There are not better or worse styles, they are just different!

I also said in Luci's blog that my fav poems are free verse poems, but that doesn't matter.

What I said had 2 parts: 1) "to make people here to improve their poems" --- And for 'improving' I meant you can ALWAYS improve whatever you do even if is already good! I meant that maybe people can try to re-write their free verse poems to make them better (in the same free style)

    2) "and encourage them to try to write a poem with rhyme" --- There I meant that you can try to make a poem with rhyme AS WELL. Even if you just like free verse poems it's a good exercise to go out from your comfort zone and TRY different things, TRY these things you don't really like that much and TRY to explore that field... Because that's the great and fun thing about art and learning: TO EXPLORE, TO TRY things that probably you don't like that much, but from which you can learn too.

I hope now you can understand my words... I really just want everybody to try to understand each other! But it's so complicated sometimes :D

  • Onee,

you came up with definitions etc. so let me post what Oxford dictionary says about poetry.
poetry - literary work in which the expression of feelings and ideas is given intensity by the use of distinctive style and RYTHM....
I read somewhere that free verses should also follow rules, even though on the other hand other sources say.. it is free and without rules. One big mess, right? :D
You know, it reminded me of rap and songs. Would you call a song .... rap song as song is about singing? It is to me like free verse style - poem without rhymes... I didn't say here that all posted poems are wrong, grammatically incorrect etc. and I am not getting why people put themself into position of the victims. I just tried to show my perspective and ask others to try to come up with rhymes... I really consider your challdnge great idea and I like it like I said...
  • Dear Serene,,

Thank you so much. I'm glad that you found it useful. Happy to see you around. ^_^

  • And, MARY, please never taste birdy poop. :D

Correction: Let's put the blame only to me. :p

  • Dear MARY,

I was okay when Lady Noor said that my poem were not a poem.

I was thinking when Danny Teacher said that some members weren't succeed in making poem with rhyme.

Until Luci's blog with the title "Is a poem without rhyme a poem? " and she mentioned her disappointment for members' poems.... I feel like to write something here. I am no longer okay if some other members' poems are questioned with those language.

This is not about my personal feeling with Luci. Not at all. As I said, I'm logical and willingly accept correction.

Also, it's not about loving my challenge, , :/ but thanks. ;)

You said "I think Luci's intention is just to make people here to improve their poems and encourage them to try to write a poem with rhyme" Does it mean poem/poetry would be better with rhyme?? Oh, sad, MARY, how could people think so? Poem/poetry is like a food which people will like based on their tastes.  If Luci (Luci, hope you also read this) intends to guide members to do so, her guide must be clear and not opposing the other styles.

You know, poem without rhyme is my favorite.

Well, one matter (doubt) is still in my mind. It is about poetry and poem. I asked Teacher Danny about this, but he said the poem challenge is okay, though he choose poetry challenge. However, this blog is the result of my research for this. I hope Teacher Danny would gladly explain if he knows well.

If the simple matter was to change it to poetry, we don't need to discourage people. Don't you agree, my awesome gurl? ;) Let put the blame only to me...

  • Dear Onee! Such a nice informative blog! before reading the blog, I know nothing about the rules of the poems. Thank you, dear, for bringing up the object in such a nice and zephyr way. Hats of you.

  • Hey Onee! You mentioned there some very cool writers ;)  As I said in Luci's blog, I love free verse poems as well, but both styles are cool!

Anyway, I think Luci's intetion is just to make people here to improve their poems and encourage them to try to write a poem with rhyme, that's all. So plz! don't feel 'dizzy'! We all love your challenge! :)

And now, a poem with rhyme!:

    Birdy Birdy,
    In the sky,
What are you doing in my eye?
    It tastes like sugar,
    It feels like soup,
    Oh My God!
    It's birdy pOop! D:

Sorry! I don't even have a college degree! XD
