Universities have always been the origin of cultural evolution in every societies. It is argued that post-secondary education ought to take the same number of men and women students in each major. I’m totally opposed to this idea. I believe that, universities should accept students with respect to their skills and interests, regardless of their gender.

I think that, universities should accept students in accordance with their skills. The best and the most practical way to assess the ability and talents of students is through their scores in university courses. For example, students who wants to pursue their study in some engineering topics, must show good aptitude in mathematics and physics. Furthermore, they need to have a special talent to work with numbers and some specialized software packages, like programming skills. This is one of the criteria that a student must be accepted in a university.

The other essential criterion for students to be admitted into a university is their interests. If individuals are into a subject, they will definitely show more inspiration to their courses at university. Because interest can motivate people to work in harsh circumstances, that is inevitable in some particular jobs. For instance, to become a good doctor, being hard working and hence not to surrender in severe conditions, that everybody may confront during the study and work, are crucial. Therefore, in this situations having a strong interest and motivation can help individuals to survive.

In conclusion, I think accepting the same number of male and female students in each major is not a good factor for having and training effective work-force for the society. In my opinion, interests and skills are the two key factors for being accepted by universities.

  • Hi Salman,
I agree with you, because I think a university is a place to improve the skill of students.
But, if too many male students or too many female students, maybe it can't keep the balance of social condition. It is probably what universities concern about.
I don't know whether my universities take the same number of male and female students or not. Some majors/subjects have a significant number of female students or otherwise. Maybe it depends on their interest, as you say.
For example: Biology and Industrial Engineering have a larger number of female students than male students. Otherwise, Electrical Engineering and Machine Engineering have a larger number of male student than female student. So, it seems they choose the students by their skill and interest.

In my point of view, I think good universities won't take the same number of male and female student, but they will take the students by their interest and skill.
Nice to know your opinion.. :)
