"A legal loophole in 1913 made it possible to send babies by mail. This picture was taken after it was banned in 1920" (phew!)

Yes, it's as crazy as it seems.

In the early days of the parcel post you just had to attach stamps to your children's clothes and send them, as any other "normal" letter or parcel (no kidding, just like that!*). They "rode trains to their destinations, accompanied by letter carriers. One newspaper reported it cost 53 cents for parents to mail their daughter to her grandparents for a family visit."

Let's look the "cool" thing about it: You could travel for just 53 cents! XD   I wonder if this might be the origin of the low-cost travel companies :P

Okay, there's no need to explain how crazy insane thing is just the idea of mailing kids like that so, let's have some fun: Where would you've liked to be sent if you were a kid in 1913?? XD

  • Early on in my childhood, I already dreamt and imagined I would be sent to the United States of America.  My desire to go to US resulted in my pen pal writing in 1958!!!

  • The airlines allowed children to travel alone and be attended to by the flight attendants or stewards while on board the plane.  Maybe, it was from that law that these airlines lift their regulation,

  • If this method existed in the time of little red riding hood, she wouldn't have had the chance to go by herself and meet the wolf in the woods.. then we would have lost half of our sweet childhood memories :D

  • Oh myyy!!! This is really insane!! Did anybody take care of these bags?? :D Thanx for such interesting topic...have never heard of it! As for being sent to some destination... just imagined little Luci crying in the bag traveling by train to Spain to visit little Mary :D lmao
  • Dear Mary, seriously? Without reading your later reaction about this photo, I was so furious to know parents could do this freaking mailing scheme, and there were parents done this before and grabbed the chance to sent their kids with the helped of a  courier. Totally absurd! I just can’t move on, to think that I will rely on someone I barely know to fetch my future kid and put her in that gross bag! (let me laugh for a while)

But, hey! it’s not every day that you can travel that cheap. :D my evil self-wants to consider this… oops, my system aborted the idea..NO! I’d rather stay home and I swear I will be very mad when I learned that my parents sent me like =this way=. Plus, who will enjoy that nasty trip at a very young age? Sorry, Mary, I’m a spoiler. :D

Btw, it is so nice to see you back. :)
