That's the question i asked myself for more than 2 months after i found out that my laptop was ready to give up. I know nothing about technic and i understand computer language as well as i understand chinese language. So my decision really depended on the arguments people around gave me. My son was one of them, i have to say he really made the difference in my decision.I always had a PC and, and though i am not a computer freak, i could manage to work on without having too many problems. The good anti-virus i had on could escape all the attacks but sometimes my PC was slow and with time, i had more and more problems that i was not able to solve.

Many of my friends had a Mac and they were all fan of it, not thinking for a minute to buy a PC again in the future. I was used to PC and i hesitated so much because i would have to start all over again, thinking that maybe i wouldn't make it! But my friends were making fun of me because one of their arguments was that it's much easier to use a Mac than a PC .

Many times i visited a computer shop, talking with the seller about the good and the bad of both computers. The bad was that all with Mac is more expensive.

But, the final argument that made me decide to go for a Mac was that the big advantage of owning a Mac is that far fewer malicious programs are written to attack the Mac. So it is said to be much safer than a PC. Another thing is that Mac also have some incredible Apple applications as Garageband which is all you can dream of if you like to work with music and videos. For graphics it also seems much better but if you like games  (i don't) a Pc is more indicated.

So now i am sitting in front of my new Macbook Pro having head aches trying to learn all the applications which are new for me, making mistakes, trying again, giving up and coming back 10 minutes later because i can't quit before i understand how it works.

This afternoon i tried to listen to my friend Selma's post, but of course, it didn't work ! Why ? I will try to find out tomorrow :)) Now i am fed up :))  Yes, up to now, PC was easier for me...

  • Hello dear Valentine, I am following your teacher's advices. I try, sometimes i succeed, sometimes i fail. What gets on my nerves is that to do something i used to do in 10 minutes on my PC, now i need twice as much time, but i am making progresses :)) Thanks for your encouragements.
  • Hello Hardi, you seem to know so much about computer... That's great ! Come over here and be my teacher :))
  • Hello Manuela!!! When I was at school, I attended a computer course and my teacher told me alltime "Don't be afraid to try". Wish you good luck and patience in the learning :) But what is better, I am very poor in it. We have the official relations :) :) :)
  • There are several reason why I won't use Microsoftware. First reason, is that there's so many malicious things like viruses and such made for Windows. It reguires so much effort and time to protect it. All the time upgrading, antivirus software scan, scan against malware and so on.. And even then, although doing everything. It can still happen that once or twice in year something malicious slip by, and ruins the day.

Second is.. The Intellectual property and licensing.. For Microsoft's software I have to buy the program with high price. It's really a lot of money for me, but I would actually only get the physical storage medium where the program is stored. I'm still restricted to do many things with the software.. Basically I'm only licensed to use it in ways that defined by it's owner.

Well lets compare it with food and cooking. Microsofts food can be very delicious, but it's receipt and ingredients are secret and is the intellectual property of Microsoft.. Similar to coca-cola. That is kept secret. Except Cocacola company don't dictate what you can do with the drink you buy. When you buy it, you own both the drink inside of bottle and the bottle too...

In Linux world. All the receipts belong to community. Everyone capable, can try to cook own personal Linux, make changes in receipt and share with friends.. Actually when you change the receipt you're obligated to share also the new receipt in case you share the final cooked product. :P But although u are allowed, you don't have to cook your self. You can just eat which ever other Linux chefs cooking. You can chose a priced non free Linux also. In that case the receipt is still free, but You get a Linux that is cooked by master chefs and maybe you will have also a butter serving it for you, with that money.. or u can call anytime to kitchen for advices and support how the food is meant to be shewd.. I think

Well about Mac. I don't know about it's licensing politic. How strong restrictions there could be for using it's software.. against piracy and such. Maybe it's like Microsoft, or maybe it's more free. I don't know, but I have the feeling that I would like the mac more. :)

  • Hello QdM,

Sorry, I can't answer your question QdM because i am not an expert in computers :) Thanks for checking this blog .

  • Hello Hardi,

To use windows for me was easy because i was used to, but i know nothing about Linux. Why do you say that you would never buy a PC with Microsoft's ware ? What's the reason i mean ?

Yes, that's what my son also told me !  Mac is the easiest he said.... up to now, not for  me :)-

  • Hahahahah, dear Expector, you made me laugh, to speak chinese for me seems to be a lot more difficult than to use a PC or even a Mac ! Thanks for stoping by .

  • My congratulations, for your new computer.

Well I think mac is probably better too, but it's too expensive for me. If the price, or money in general, was no concern to me. I would probably buy a mac too...

Certainly I would never buy a PC with Microsoft's software. I've used Linux on my PC already about 10 years. Windows is really too different and difficult to me.

So it would be either a PC with Linux, or Mac for me.

Don't know how difficult Linux could be for beginner. To me it's much easier than windows. Don't know about mac. Never used a mac. But I believe, that it must be even easier than Linux.

    ^_^

  • I can speak Chinese but don't really know computers:))  Nothing is perfect!
