My Ode to an American Toilet

My dear friends, as I am used to saying, our great learners and thankful fans! As a result of my previous test on American synonyms, I can’t help posting this blog for each and all of you to feel comfortable if you visit my country one day! Ha-ha-ha! So, this blog is a kind of a joke, but all information is real and I think you should know what I am going to tell you.

So, A TOILET, a place we all visit a few times a day not to manure the land all around! Some people even call it “my favorite place” as it is the only one place for them to feel alone.

Let’s start!

A TOILET is an international word like taxi or metro. And now I will tell you what words we use in America, OK?

  1. A BATHROOM is at home. If we have guests and I need to go there, I usually say, I have to make a call or get something from the kitchen or something like that.
  2. A RESTROOM is in the most of public places. Being a man, I say “I’ll be back right away” and go to the MEN’S ROOM. Our ladies say “I have to powder my nose” and go to the LADIES’ ROOM.
  3. A LAVATORY is in some public transport like planes, trains, buses. If you travel alone, you don’t have to say anything, just go there!
  4.  A WASHROOM is also American, but is not so common. It is like a RESTROOM or BATHROOM.
  5. W.C. may be written on the doors of a restroom in some public places.
  6. JOHN is a slang word.

I hope, you will not be lost in the USA now!  MY BIG SMILE!

  • Dear Expector! I was expecting to be asked this question about a restroom and here we are! Ha-ha! OK, it is a restroom as it is the only one place in the modern world where you can feel yourself. Does it make sense? Ha-ha!  As to the bathroom, we call it that way as there is a bath tub and, for example, in the 19th century, there were no showers and people had to take a bath to wash themselves.

Answering to the other question of yours, I don't miind. There are 4 bathrooms in our house but only one of them is on the first floor. So, it is used by our employees, our guests and even our cats if they are downstairs. We both also use it when we are on the first floor. Honestly, I don't see any problem here. If I eat, drink or even sleep (cats) with my friends, why not to share the toilet with them? Not to say that our housekeeper clears all bathrooms almost every day. Have I answered your questions?

  • Thanks Danny! I really enjoyed our conversation about the toilet:)

I was wondering if you could help explain it more - a toilet isn't really a room for us to have a rest, but it's called 'restroom'. We can have a bath in it, so it makes sense to call it 'bathroom'.

Some people may not think it's a good idea to share the toilet with guests, so they'll buy a house with more toilets. Would you mind guests using your toilet?

    Thanks again!

  • Dear Expector! Thanks for your nice comment! A washroom is reallly smart. As you see, we, too, thought up some excuses. Ha-ha! But bathroom and restroom are not bad, either! Don't you think so? Ha-ha!

  • People here tend to refer to the toilet as 'washroom' - they'll ask where the washroom is, even though they're in their friend's home, not in a public place.

It may sound less embarrassing to say 'I wanna wash my hands' than 'I wanna go to the toilet'. Once inside, you can do exactly what you want  - even though you really need to wash your hands. Smart, isn't it:)

  • Dear Fahime! Welcome!

  • Dear Danny thanks for giving us those information.

I just hope to visit your country sooooooooo soon. :-)

  • Dear Sandra! Watering trees sounds very intelligent! Ha-ha!

  • Dear Expector! I meant ODE, a kind of poetry. I had no idea to start such a topic, but if you read the replies to my blog about American synonyms, you will surely get why I posted it

  • Sorry I thought it was 'odor/odour' when I first saw the title - since any toilet can give off some odor rather than 'ode':)

Only too often, you'll see 'Ladies' or 'Gents' on the door of a restroom in a public place. Sometimes there aren't any words on the door - just a picture representing a lady or a gentleman. Be careful not to enter the wrong roon - you need to make sure it's the picture you want or you belong to, because the little pictures on the doors can look so similar:)

    Interesting topic!

  • Camel, agree 100%! Ha-ha!
