Wow, your last paragraph described that your family is more important than your career. It is great choice because as I know this is not easy. I don’t know if someday I can do as you do :)
Okay back to the theme, I just want to point out about your first line. In my opinion we don’t need to think what the other think about us, but it should be noticed that as long as what we do not to harm or take advantages from other. Some people might feel happy if look at us in sadness and they could be sad if find us in happiness because their heart burning .So, why we have to worry about.

This is a very intirguing and misguiding question, already have raised number of times in this forum.
Living life as commanded by Allah is like loving Him. Because whom you love you do your utmost to obey him.
Allah gives life,
Allah gives parents, (family),
Allah gives loves for family (parents, siblings, husband, wife, children, relatives, friends).
Allah wants to love them a all.
So obeying Allah to love family is like we love Allah.
