  • Yes indeed, good answer Hanane. Let's see how history repeats itself.
  • Greetings Dear Sir Josef,

It is Colonialism. A look back at the history of these countries you will find out that they were victims of the European greed and will to dominate the Other. The Other who is inferior, weak and uncivilized. Most of these countries were colonies to France, Spain, Great Britain and Portugal. They divided them according to their interests and will of expansion, and regardless of the country's history religion or first borders. "As if sharing out a cake, every country is trying to give herself the larger portion."

  • The world has become populated nowadays...long time ago, people don't care about the property or any piece of land. Usually rich or upper class people in society had the huge part of it. The lines indicates that people wants power, connection and these things reflects on its society that we are living in today. Wether we like it or not, certain rules and application applies in this issue. It means that, we are in the boundary of a laws that govern the world even before and until today. What had had happened today is just the cycle of the past. It's all connected in a certain point.

  • No, it doesn't look like these borders on map actually mean something. I checked it from google maps, by thinking, that when there's a border, then there should be some tracks alongside with the border, too.. Since some borderguards would check it, time to time.. To make sure, that it's still there and neighbor country haven't moved it at night.. :P

But there wasn't anything shown on satellite photo. Instead I found there a lot of track crossing the border, following of some.. higher ground.. stronger surface.. or how it's called (dune?). Probably it's a highway of desert :P... But I don't see there any checkpoint.. obviously.. he-he-he. It would be to expensive to keep someone in watch in there at desert. :P

  • Hi, Josef!

This is a very interesting fact. Thank you!

Whenever I looked at the African borders in map, I was puzzled with these straight linear borders and I used to have wondered if there were some reasons from the historical perspective. If this is true as 'the borders were drawn by British and French draftsmen who sat with maps and drew the lines of the frontiers with rulers' (Thanks siriA for this!), how did the nations make the actual borders and declare their borders? Are they really the straight linear borders from the one end to the other end?

  • Thanks Salim for the deep and perseptive comment. Knowing the truth makes it rather sad to think about our maps:(
  • Interesting. I have never thought about that 8.

Well I do agree with u Dreamer Girl and hope that too for our countries InshaaAllah.

Whatever the reasons only the people who made the borders know that :S. Anyway I like the view of our area's map its unique especially the small step on the upper part of Sudan :)

  • Good research @SiriA :) Would those old British fellows hail from the same kingdom that is today calling so loudly for democracy everywhere, that ruled those countries for decades as undemocratic colonial powers and that supplies guns, tanks, fighter-aircraft and bombs to the dictators it has been so friendly with? Does the word "hypocrisy" come to mind?
  • Amazing, indeed!
  • Some of those lines are very clever. They actually run along lines of latitude and longitude.
