About 57％ of Japanese high school students go to university. However some of them are not going for studying, but for getting an academic background for their resume. High school students who want to go to university study hard to pass an entrance exam. However some of them who pass it don't study hard after they have entered the university. They study a little just before exams. They think that all they have to do is to get an academic background. I know that studying is important even after they have graduated from the university. We must keep studying.
This tendency applies to when they find a job. They try hard to find a job, but don't think about what they want to do seriously. So they tend to leave the company soon. I think we should think about things from a long-term view and what we want to do.

Getting chance in a university is a very good thing in anyone's life. But, how we deal with it, it may be a question! If we think, as we get chance so somehow we will manage a degree, it is our problem. And, yes, we have to learn all through our life. If we are positive towards learning we may find our life in a different way!

And that's why I didn't get into university. I've always had issues with the orthodox educational system; I think that, as you well said, the goal there is just to get an academic background, to 'study' to get a mark and to memorize stuff as if you were a parrot or a trained monkey.
But that's the system. Other thing is that, of course, there you can also find a lot of super great professors and education professionals who really love their teaching work and they do it pretty well. If you're lucky to have one or two of these kind of teachers, then of course it will worth to go to College.

According to me, the purpose are
1) to experience so many things. It's an opportunity to have genius friends around. But, when one is attending university, one should learn so many things, not only what are in the book or at the university.
2) to know various type of people. Anyone can do this without attending university. However, the result couldn't be the same.
These two are the most important to me.
