Yes, you can say "English is easy to learn." or "It's easy for us to learn English.", but you don't say "We are easy to learn or learn English."

You can use this structure if the subject of the sentence is also the object of the infinitive. So, you can say "He is easy to please." or "The book is difficult to read."

The adjective 'impossible' can be so tricky too, for example, you don't say "She is impossible to do that" - because 'she' is also the subject of the infinitive 'to do'.

I hope I've made it clear enough for you to use the structure correctly. Any questions?

  • Hi Onee,

I'm glad you managed to add a comment here. I suggest you write when you feel like writing. Thanks!

  • Dear Doctor Expector,,

It is impossible to learn English Grammar instantly.

It is too high to climb.

He is too handsome to be a waiter.

It is easy for Expector to write blogs.

Expector's blogs are easy to understand.

I'm NOT lazy to write blogs. I'm just a little tired sometimes. :D

Thanks for the useful tips, doc. I never miss your blogs, though you don't always see my comments. Please forgive. ^_^

  • Hi Shoba,
    Great! You got it!

  • Hi bet,

Yes, the structure can be so confusing. One more sentence: "Expector's blogs are easy to understand." - 'Expector's blogs' is the subject of the sentence, and is also the object of the infinitive 'to understand'.

    Hope you get it!

  • It is impossible to say what someone is thinking.

It is impossible to make a child stand still for a few minutes.

    She is impossible to please.

    He is impossible to handle.

Are these sentences correct, Sir Expector? Specially the last two sentences?

Thank you for yet another useful post.  :)

  • Hello, smith, please give another sentence and show the subject and object, please. I am a bit confused though I also use this structure without knowing the role...

It is  quite impossible to  understand hurriedly.

  • Yes, Sir, the words I put inside () is the wrong version.I tried to follow your premise…thanks!

  • @dara

Yes, the result is impossible to know - it's everybody's guess now. Thanks!

    @Risty

Sorry for the confusion -  I just re-edited the blog. The sentence "We are impossible to eat." is wrong - because 'we' is also the subject of the infinitive 'to eat'.

    Thanks for the comment!

  • Oh my! I will try…

It is impossible for you to eat (we are impossible to eat)…oops Expector, please provide more examples… I can’t grasp the context of this usage…sorry. :(

However, thank you for opening this..I will research about this.

  • Xie xie admin. Smith! It's impossible for us to tell who is going to be the chief executive of America before tomorrow, is it? Thanks for your useful blogs for all of us.
