Expector is about to study in Canada

Hi Everyone,

I'm glad to inform you that I've been offered a 6-month observership (as an academic visitor) in a teaching hospital in Quebec, Canada, and I will be going there very soon. It's really a dream come true - I eventually got the opportunity to study in an English-speaking country. I hope and am sure that I can improve both English and surgical skills there. I can't wait to hit the road. I'm so excited, but a little nervous about the upcoming trip. I decided it's time for me to share the news with you, and want to know what you think of this?

Do you think it's a valuable opportunity to study in Canada?

Canada is a beautiful English-speaking country, which I always want to visit. Once I'm there, I can immerse myself in an 100% English environment, which is certainly beneficial for improving English.

Any tips on travel?

I'm busy packing. I'm going to pack in some clothes, food, books, and, of course, passport, credit card, mobile phone and laptop. Please let'm know if I missed something important for me to travel to and live in another country far from mine. Are you nervous when you're about to travel?

Are you afraid of change?

Many people are. Change, however, doesn't necessarily mean something troublesome. With change, you can get new opportunities, new experience, and meet new friends - probably one of them will become your best friend in life. So, it's worth it, even though it's also true you may need to make an effort to adjust yourself to the new life, new job, and unfamiliar environment.

Your opinion does matter!!

  • Nebia,

Good French! I wish I could speak French and wish I could take you with me to Canada:)))

I'll bring a simple French-learning book there in case I need one. Maybe I can pick up some French there. I know people from your part of the world are good at French. You can teach me if you like to. You must like the food in Montreal, the second largest French-speaking city in the world.

Thanks for you nice and funny comment!

  • Grace,

Yeah, it's a good idea to bring such utensils there for cooking Chinese food. I can always buy some vegetables in the supermarket and cook in the way we cook here in China. I'd say I'm not so good at cooking, though I can cook some simple dishes.

Another problem: hot water. I like to drink something hot, and I am afraid of drinking the 'tap water' directly without boiling it. So I'll take a kettle/pot with me.

  • Wis,
    Thanks for the tips.
I'll bring my driving licence there, though it may not be accepted in Canada (China don't accept any licence from outside).
I agree that I'd better not take any food with me. I just thought I might miss Chinese food. Thankfully, there are some Chinese restaurants there. And, hopefully, I'll get used to food in Canada.
Yes, I'll carry my passport where I go. If only the passport was more carriable!
    Thanks again!
  • congratulations and have nice trip

definetly uyou will learn so much in those 6 months , dont bother your self with things any thing would be ok

  • Hi, Doctor!

Firstly, I really want to say to you, 'CONGRATULATIONS!'

As you've already said, this is your dream coming true. You will have a great opportunity for both your profession & your English progression, especially in speaking. I am sure that you must be so excited, but I am wondering if your family will go with you, or just yourself. If they are, your children may have more chances for their potentialities to be explored as young people have more latent capacities than mature people.

I think you may have less cultural shocks when you stay there because you have already learned many different cultural things through MyEC, however, you'd better prepare yourself to be confronted such as eating habits, etiquettes, etc, because there are so many opposite differences between the eastern & western cultures.

However, I am sure you can easily adopt all the differences and there wouldn't be any problem whatsoever. You never know, they may want you to stay longer then expected, hahaha! As I left Korea 27 years ago, I originally wanted to stay or to study for five years only but I've permanently been living in UK until now, hahaha!

  • Oh expector, do not worry about French.

    I've got a genius idea!!!

What about taking me with you I will be the translator for you !!!!!

I will meet the myec members Tara, Nafis and I hope Celine Dion she is from there. You will be working at the hospital and tired after that no?!

And I will be enjoying helping you.......!!! :d

    ok!!!! Kidding

Do not blame me if I tried

Je vous souhaite un très bon voyage mon cher ami. Bonne chance.

Wishing you a nice trip my dear friend. Good luck.

I told you I can help with French.

I hope you like my sense of humour, I like to give some funny comments.

Waiting for your answer. If there is a place in the carryon baggage just tell me I will start severe diet from now, ok!

  • Hi Expector Smith,

    Congratulations!!

Would you cook yourself when you are there? If so, you may consider whether you have to bring some small cooking appliances such as a hot pot or an automatic cooker and steamer below. It's quite useful whatever you want to cook like rice, eggs, soup and so forth. When my cousin went to Holland for working, this gadget helps him a lot.

Wishing you a wonderful and safe trip, and please do share with us some photos or experiences at your convenience.

  • Tanks also to najwa, Hanane, Nadiyah, Fizzy!

Thanks for your nice comments. Thanks for encouraging me to face the challenge at this stage. I really appreciate it. I'm gald I can always count on you, my EC friends! I'll keep you informed of my trip to Canada.

    Thanks again,

    Expector

  • Josef,

Thanks for taking the time to respond! Oh yes, sure, no surgical details! I'll share something really fun. Maybe I'll share something like my new life, traveling, learning English, meeting friends, eating habits, etc.  I can't wait to share:)) I'll let you know when I settle into my new life there!

  • Forget-me-Not/Manuela,

Wow! Very impressive and helpful suggestions. Thanks for sharing, my friend.

It's so cool that you can speak French. Can you help me with this: 'Minda de Gunzburg'? French?

Thanks for the link. Fantastic scenery! If only I just went there sight-seeing!

Oh yes, the adapter/convertor! We use 220v here. I've got such an adapter, but I'm not sure if I really need a convertor for some electrical appliances.

Driving licence? I wonder if China's driving licences are allowed to use in Canada. Do you have any idea?

I'm planning to put all the food (instant noodles, pickles, sausages) in my check-in baggage not in the carry-on luggage. Is it possible or allowed to bring them in the checked baggage?

Do I need carry my passport all the time? That would be troublesome. Maybe I could put it in my dorm most of the time?

Could you tell me if I could use USD(US dollar) instead of CAD (Canadian dollar)? There's only USD in my credit card.

How could you be nevous about travelling? I know you travel frequently. And, I also know you're good at taking pictures. Yes, it will take me some time to get used to the new environment and feel comfortable. I hope it won't take me so long a time!!!
