English Wins

Yes, the 2016 Rio Olympics are over. The United States and the United Kingdom, both of which speak English, have won the most gold medals.

The US is almost always at the top of the Olympic medal counts - the Rio Olympics is no exception. To my surprise, the UK is number two on the list, not China or Russia or Germany.

So, English wins - maybe because both of them speak English. Next time when you answer the question 'Why do you need to learn English?', you could say you want to excel at sport:))

Did you enjoy the Rio Olympics? What/who impressed you most? Did you pick up some sport(s) English?

  • Thanks Afro!

  • I did not watch  but listened to morning news!

  • @ELF

    Oh, sorry!

    @saba

    Yes, that sounds unfair. These things happen, though.

    @Josef

    It seems the trick works for Team GB - no wonder it's number two on the list of the gold counts. I mean anyway the British Olympic Association succeeded - they've beaten China and Russia.

    Yes, I wonder what's the point of competing in the Olympics? To show how great or powerful a nation is, instead of fighting in a real war? Or, to show how healthy or wealthy a county can be? Do we really need the honor standing on the podium with our nation's flag being raised?What do they really want to convey?

    Thanks for the discussion!

    @MARY

    Yes, English language may have nothing to do with the accomplishment:)

  • Erm well... I doubt to speak english can help you to become a better athlete, I can't see the link... but oh well, weirdest things happen everyday!

    What I think it helps a lot for having the best athletes is picking the best ones of every field around the world and paying them a good amount of money. And that's something that US and UK can do... what a coincidence!

    The 'funny' thing about this is that many of US and UK's professional athletes are inmigrants. How about that Mr. Donald Trump and UK Brexit?? Oh, the hypocrisy! :P

  • Great topic Expector! No one is more surprised than me to see the UK (or is it Team GB?) come second. In fact, it's so surprising that one must suspect a little skullduggery. What makes it all the more surprising is that the Brits (and the USA for that matter) have one of the highest rates of obesity. What I understand is that the UK government (would that be the British Olympic Association?) approached the task in a particularly Machiavellian way and targetted for financial support the sports where Team GB would most likely win. The rest fell by the wayside. No doubt very clever if your objective is to win. Not very clever if your objective is to follow the Olympic Creed:

    "The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well."

    Under normal circumstances, and without political intervention, the Russians would have wiped the floors with the Brits. And maybe the Chinese would have too, though I am not aware of any political shenanigans there.

  • Hello Expector

    I enjoyed watching track and field, gymnastics and swimming but I didn't enjoy weightlifting because most Iranians were sad for Behdad Salimi, although he set a 216kg world record in snatch, the jury didn't accept his lifts in clean and jerk.

  • Nope, not like that, I didn't had opportunity to watch that Games...

  • @Adaline

    Yes, while some people may think the IOC has overreacted to the doping, many may think doping is intolerable.

    @Estanis

    I chose some of the games to watch, too. This year I watched only the women's volleyball final and a badminton match on TV, but I did watch sports news.

    @ELF

    You're not alone - it seems people are not so interested in the Olympics.

  • I have missed Olimpic all games... !!

  • This year I haven't followed too much the olimpic games but I enjoyed a lot the basketball matches. It's been always the most interesting to me.
