English Learning Experience

The British, who ruled at subcontinent for about more than a century, had laid down the foundation of English as an official language, which is still the language of the court, public and private sectors in my country.  Therefore, English is taught as a compulsory subject from grade one to grade fourteen. A candidate for the job must possess the ability to write it excellently.

At my time, English used to be taught from grade six. So, we started learning this language very late. At the beginning, I had no idea about its importance. I just recognized it as the language of cartoon and censored English movies which were broadcasted by PTV only in a certain time. The more I watched cartoon, the more I became enthusiastic about learning it.

After completion of one year, when we were asked to write a short note on my hometown, I was bit confused what to write. I just wrote four lines, two words in which were roman English. The next day, the teacher came in class with test papers. While distributing papers, he expressed displeasure. I felt as if I hurt him with my bad performance in the test. Thereafter, I studied harder just to please him. When he appreciated me, I felt great. Gradually, I began falling in love with English to the extent that I began speaking English with foreigners, whenever I found them on streets, market, or any other place in my country, just after completion of grade 11 study.

Approximately three years after graduation, there was nothing progress made in the language, but I did a routine work causing a great loss which I realized when I appeared in a competitive exam for higher job. Then I castigated myself, "neither I ignored English nor did it ignore me back". Since then, I began loving it, hoping it would love me back. Let's see if it loves me back or not or how long does this love last? :D
