Tonight, on the TV news i heard a topic i wish to debate here with you.

Have you ever heard about Rozita Iza? Rozita is a young Argentinian cow, which once adult will produce milk with similar caracteristics to woman milk. This is at least the ambition of scientists from Argentina and China.

The idea of the scientists is to improve the milk produced by cows that has deficiencies for humans. They, therefore, introduced into the genome of Rosita 2 genes, important for human nutrition. Two proteins, held in human milk, the "lactoferrin" which brings iron to our body, but whiwh is also a powerful antiviral and "lizozime" that protects us from bacteria.
In China, scientists announced they had already cloned 300 cows and their milk may already be sold in supermarkets,in 10 years.

According to the producers this milk is delicious and sweeter but has a stronger taste than woman's milk. Scientists think it might be a good substitute for milk powder gave to nourrisons.
In Europe, the sound is quite different, the scientific community remains sceptical and cow's "humanized" milk seems to give european scientists some ethical problems

Now, my opinion is that, as far as searchers are sure of the good quality of the milk and that it would not arm babies, i am wondering why there should be problems ? So many premature babies who needs human's milk, but can't have it because of different reasons would take great profits if they could be fed with a milk that has the same qualities than mother's milk.
So, where would be the problem ?

I would be very happy to hear your opinion about this. Would you agree with the european searchers or rather with the Chinese and Argentinians ?

  • You're absolutely right Joe, i just hope your wife will have no problem to breath feed your baby. Some women don't have that chance and that's why i think that, in this case, what searchers discovered may give a chance to survive to many babies in the world. Thanks for your opinion.
  • Hello Mayumi, we both have the same opinion :) Thanks for stopping by.
  • Human milk is still best for babies...:)

But if and only if this cow's milk is sure to be safe and the benefits are just like those mother's milk, this will be very helpful for those babies who for one reason or another can't take mother's milk but on this case only..

  • Hello again Salim,

Of course, i agree, about what you said, but it's another debate.

  • OK Montse, take your time and think about it. But you already gave a good opinion here and i believe i understood what you wanted to say. Thanks for stopping by a giving us your opinion.
  • Hello Salim, in some African countries, as for example Ethiopia, to have a cow is priceless as it gives them milk everyday to feed a family. They don't even think about killing the cow to have meat because once the cow would be killed they wouldn't have milk anymore. isn't better to have milk everyday than to have meet for a fe months ?
  • My dear friends,

First let me thank you for your comment. After reading them, i believe my post was not very clear. So i am gona add something here.

I absolutely agree that women's milk is the best and when there is the possibility to feed the baby with it, there shouldn't be any hesitations. BUT what i mean, is that SO MANY babies around the world  can not be fed with human's milk and i believe that, instead of powder milk they could be given that "cows humanized milk" which, according to the chinese and argentinian scientists seems to have the same qualities. Let's imagine that, in some African countries, (talking about Africa because i know about those) where they hardly have nothing to eat, people could raise those genetically modified cows and, therefore give to their babies a milk that could be a good substitute to their mother's milk. This idea really makes me dream...

  • I think cow's milk is great, but for calves not for human babies. However, all women need to feed their babies for at least a year, if you want a healthy baby.

However, sometimes a woman needs to use the formula to feed their babies, so I think it's a great idea to try to find a good formula for this extreme cases.
  • In China, it's not uncommon for a baby to drink sterile 'cow milk'. But we recommend that babies drink human breast milk.
  • Dear Manuela, what I really think is that humans no matter how hard they try, they can't make a milk like breast's milk. It's like a real hand and an artificial hand. Artificial hand is made by humans and is similar to real hand, however, we can't compare them at all. I think scientists should research more about this kind of milk and it's pretty soon to judge about it.
