A Bill Against Child Employment

The Sindh Assembly on Wednesday unanimously passed a bill against employment of children below the age of 14, named as The Sindh Prohibition of Employment of Children Bill, 2017 which carries up to six-months imprisonment and a fine up to Rs 50,000 for the offenders. And if a child is employed for a hazardous job, the prison term may be extended up to three years with Rs 100,000 fine.Apparently, the action by members of Sindh Assembly are appreciable but the reality is that the Sindh Government has no any Alternative solution to alleviate the poverty of its people or change the plight of their lives. The funds allocated for this purpose in the Budget is not accessible to the entitle. The members have taken such step to show off as if they are doing their job which erect further barriers for the poor who fight against the rapidly growing inflation. There are number of precedences in the history that the poor when failed to facilitate their child the basic rights such as healthy nutrition, cloths, let their child work. By doing so, the child not only support his family but to achieve his goals by carrying on his education. My question to the members is that if they take up the responsibility to cater basic need to every poor child. The steps taken is welcomed. The effect of this law in developed countries and underdeveloped countries varies. What's your opinion?

to reduce poverty by providing appropriate job to the parent of every underprivileged child. Without comprehensive development plan, this kind of policy is useless. Great solution

    Thank for the comment

  • Well, Evangeline,

    Good and sensible comment!

In reply to Luci, what I tried to tell is that mastering skill in childhood doesn't imply labouring. There are many strategies that Provincial government come with, promotion of small scale industries is one of them. What government neglects while making poverty alleviation strategy, is to check and balance the funds and ensure strick implementation of the policies and distribution of funds among the needy.

    Thank for the comment.
  • Luci,

What you said might be right from other perspective, but there is more misunderstanding that some poor parents get their child master some skills rather than enrolling them for formal education, so the child when grown up will not suffer from high rate of unemployment as many higher degree holders are seen in line for trivial job. Thus, the child in early age becomes able to earn handsome income and also able to pay attention to both family and his education if he is willing to chase his dream, but it is assumed a child labour.

Secondly, if provincial government is negligent in faciliating basic need to their people or whatever funds alocated is not properly monitered, such step can't bring fruitful result
  • Everything is about high birth rate! If you reduce number of kids u guys have there -> u will save more money -> invest money in kid's education -> make their life worth it...EDUCATION IS THE KEY WORD!!! It should be for free and for everybody! Working kids - this is sth what makes me feel disgusted and angry - these kids are losing their childhood!!! They don't play with friends and instead became slaves of this damn systhem!
