American Professor Noam Chomsky, linguist, political commentator, and thorn in the side of the US establishment, discusses intervention in Libya by the western imperialist countries. Chomsky: We are concerned with Libya but you could just as easily ask what to do with Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. There, the uprisings didn't go as far as they did in Libya, but that's because the repression was much harsher, so before a demonstration could even get started in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait they were crushed by a heavy police presence. In Bahrain, when the opposition did become fairly strong, Saudi forces entered and crushed it. Er, they destroyed the tent city, Pearl Square, and this morning they arrested the leaders and … all with the support of the West, nobody was talking about a no-fly zone in Bahrain. Er, so when the oil, the energy dictators who are loyal to us, when they crush political uprisings that's fine. Libya's a little bit of a different story - a rotten dictator, and the West has given him plenty of support but he's still not truly loyal the way the Gulf States are, so there there's been an effort, at least some talk about helping the rebels overthrow the government, no real action but some talk.
