Today on the 4th of November Russia celebrates National Unity Day. This holiday is a new one in Russia. It was reinstated as a holiday just four years ago. The day celebrates the end of what is known as the Time of Troubles in 1612.So, we had some kind of holiday lunch for our family. We had beef stew with mushrooms, potatoes and other vegetables in ceramic pots, salad made from tinned salmon, boiled eggs, cheese, boiled potatoes and carrots with mayonnaise ( some kind of sauce), one more salad made from boiled beet with mayonnaise. For desert I cooked an apple pie – sharlotka ( a quick and almost free-fat pie). Also you can see some black olives, cucumbers and tomatoes. The lunch was prepared by me and my daughter.

  • Wow! Bea, what great knowledge of Russian cuisine! I'm really happy to hear it! We eat Schi or Borsch practically every day. We usually cook a big saucepan of it and keep it in the fridge. Every time when we go for a picnic, we make Shashlyk! It's so yummy....

Bea, you know what? Halva is my favourite food, too. I also buy it rather often. It would be interesting to have a look at a small Russian grocery in Budapest. . Thanks for the nice comment! I enjoyed reading it!

  • Hello, Ann! Thanks for the nice comment! I celebrated this holiday with my family. It was Sunday, so we had a plenty of free time. My daughter helped me to prepare the lunch! We like to eat beef stew right from the ceramic pots! Join!

  • Hello, Rosenmaiden!

You're right, I felt myself like a hero. I was proud that we ( my daughter and I)  were able to cook this meal. Usually ( having 33 classes a week and being a form teacher of the 5th form) I cook something simple and quick. But, as it was a holiday and  Sunday and everybody was at home, we decided to have a big meal. My daughter helped me and everything was ready at 2 pm. Thanks for the nice comment. I like it! Nice to meet you!

  • Thanks for nice comment, Julianus Simon! I'm really glad that you like my food!

  • Grace, it's really great that you've chosen a day off for the photo challenge. I had some time to prepare something. As for ceramic pots, I've got only four of them and I don't use them for preparing food very often, only at weekends. Thanks for the comment!

  • Gabriel, thanks a lot for your praise to my meal! I can't say if I'm good at cookery or not, but I cook every day. When I have free time I can prepare something delicious. The dish in the ceramic pot( bee stew) isn't spicy ( maybe a little bit). The yellow thing on the left is an apple pie ( sharlotka). It is cooked very easily and quickly. Thanks for the comment.

  • Hello, Galina!

Nice photo! Did you really cook all the meals on the day of national unity? You a hero! :-)

    All this looks good!

  • Fortunately, we chose a day that you had time to cook for those yum food. lol..

It's really impressive that you have many ceramic pots for cooking. I suppose they save you much time when stewing or cooking soup.

  • Tawfeeq, thanks a million for such a wonderful comment! You always inspire me for doing different things better than I can. Frankly speaking I love cooking, but don't have enough time for it. So I can make such lunch only during weekends or my vacation. During weekdays I prepare something simple and quick, but I cook every day. We don't have a tradition to go to the cafe every day, only on some special occasions.
