Machu Picchu was built in 1460, but it was forgotten by the world until 1911, when it was discovered by Hiram Bingham, an American historian. He disclosed Machu Picchu by accidentally when he was looking for the lost Inca site of Vilcabamba.There is no unanimous opinion on the purpose of Machu Picchu. Some say it was the domain of female priests, the Virgins of the Sun, but remains found on site are of both genders. Others speculate that the Inca Emperor Pachacuti built it as monument to his own greatness, possibly as a royal retreat or place to relax.
