In fact, mango in English, in addition to so-called Kasturi also called Kalimantan Mango is an endemic plant of Borneo. Unfortunately, the IUCN RedList refers to him as extinct in the wild, or have become extinct in their natural habitat.
'Mangifera Casturi have a tree that can reach 25 meters high with a trunk diameter of between 40-110 cm. The bark of moss greyish white to light brown. Leaves Lancet-shaped with a pointed tip. When the young leaves moss dark purple. Kasturi fruits like mangoes another but smaller and weighs less than 80 grams.
There are three varieties of musk it is musk, Cuban, and tamarind pelipisan. Kasturi rounded fruits like mango small eggs, fruit peel thin black mottled green young and become blackish when old. Dark orange flesh. This variety has a more fragrant flavor than other varieties.
Both varieties, Cuban (kastuba) have rounded fruits eggs, with reddish rind, not black as it ages, her skin very easily separated from the flesh. Fruit orange yellow flesh.
Being three varieties, tamarind fruit has pilipisan or palipisan, light green with black spots, if the parents remain green. Chopped green yellow orange, very fibrous.
Mango species of flora designated as the identity of the province of South Borneo on the basis of the decision of the Minister of Interior No. 48 in 1989 is an endemic plant that grows only in South Borneo alone. Kasturi can grow well in the plains of alluvial soil and water sufficient lateral.
Kasturi extinct In Situ. Kasturi (Mangifera casturi) from the IUCN Red List included in the list of the conservation status of plants extinct in the wild or extinct in the wild (extinct in situ) since 1998. This species extinction caused by habitat loss due to deforestation and forest encroachment .
Fortunately there are those who grow these plants in the garden and courtyard. Cultivation is mostly done by people in the neighborhood Mataraman Banjar regency, South Kalimantan province. The mango was also planted in many other areas.
Although still not extinct and still cultivated, but it was extinct in the wild would be a great loss to the genetic diversity of the Indonesian flora. Hopefully this is not following the state kasturi of plants (and animals) other.
