"Fair play" idioms

1. add insult to injury: نمک به زخم کسی پاشیدن

hurt someone's feelings after that person harm;make bad trouble worse

_My car barely started this morning, and to add insult to injury, I got a flat tire in the driveway

_ 2. be a good sport: هم پا شدن/ ساز مخالف نزدن/

be some one who has a good sense of fair play

_ Linda was a good sport and went to the movie her friends wanted to see.

3. be a hit below the belt: ضربه ناجوانمردانه زدن

be unfair; do a cowardly act; do something against the rules of sportmanship or justice

4. fair shake: حق کسی را دادن

honest treatment

_ The insurance company gave her a fair shake.

5. get away with murder; جان سالم بدر بردن/ در رفتن

do something very bad without being punished

_Tim got away with murder and was not punished.

6. get burned: نقره داغ شدن

be severely wronged

Margaret got burned. Her ex-husband got everything.

7. give someone the ax: از پشت خنجر زدن/ بی خبر ضربه زدن - اخراج کردن

abruptly finish a relationship;fire an employee without warning

_Mr.Erikson gave Lary the ax. He was fired without any warning.

8. rake someone over the coals: به باد انتقاد گرفتن

criticize sharply

_ If Andy rakes Becky over the coal, he says mean thing to her.

9. throw someone a curve: دام برای کسی گذاشتن

mislead or deceive someone; surprise someone in an unpleasant way

_The coach threw Dan a curve. He assured him first, then fired him.
