an sms or a sms?

Short Message Service

Do you write "send me a SMS" or "send me an SMS".

I thought the latter was correct because the indefinite article depends on how the next letter is pronounced. If it's a consonant sound you write a, if it's a vowel sound you write an (e.g. a university student but an umbrella). So it should be an SMS.

Is this correct?

Interestingly google yields results for both an SMS and a SMS.

  • It just jogged ma mind of my teacher's reply to me for the same issue...It belongs to 4 years ago but yet I can remember that vividly: " Using the words "an" or "a" are not such grammars (I do agree with him coz it refers to the field of "Faraayande vaaji" then it doesn't surely requir to put "an" b4 the vowel sounds...and for the letter "u" it's required only and only for the situation by the time it's prnounced like "a" in "apple" or other things... for ex. the vocab " Umberella " roles like "a" but in "university" its got the right pronounciation of its...
