Hi, my dear friends!I am studying about ing form on the site now.It says that when we use a verb in -ing form more like a verb or an adjective, it is usually a present participle:1- Anthony is fishing.2- I have a boring teacher. We all know that "boring" is an adjective in the second sentence. Now, here is my question:Can we always make an adjective with all verbs + ing?If yes, please give us (the students) a few examples. Thanks in advance and best wishes,Bijan

  • Dear Danny!

    Thank you very much.

    Best wishes,

  • Dear Bijan! Only for these two verbs usage of the gerund or the infinitive depends on the subject as I have already explained. As to other verbs. There is the list of verbs that must be followed by the gerund only. There is another list of verbs that must be followed by infinitive only. The rest of verbs can be followed either by the gerund or by the infinitive. Sometimes, it depends on the preposition.

  • Dear Danny!

    Sorry.

I forgot to ask you a question.

If a subject is a thing, can we use a gerund after all verbs?

    Or,

Is gerund only used after "want" and "need to"?

    Best wishes,

Dear Bijan! Let me answer your question.

If a subject is a living thing, we should use only an infinitive after NEED and WANT.

She wants to go to the party.

I need to have my hair cut.

But if a subject is a thing (non-living), we use a gerund after these verbs.

My television needs/wants fixing. (It is necessary to fix it).

  • Dear Danny!
First, Thank you very very much.
Because, I will be happy, if you, dear Tanya or everybody correct my writing.
Second, should we use a gerund after "need to"?
In addition, today, I am very happy. Because, I heard in the news that British Airways started flying to Iran.
    Best wishes,

  • Dear Bijan! Let me correct this sentence:

Writing a nice blog about Iran's culture needs knowing grammar so that I can explain everything very well.

  • Dear Danny!

I like to write a blog about Iran's history and culture.

But, first, I want to complete English grammar on English Club.

Writing a nice blog about Iran's culture needs to know grammar that I can explain everything very well.

I hope that I will do this soon.

Thanks for your nice comment about my country,

  • Dear Zahra, Bijan! Thank you so much for your invitations and your sincere warm words! As I said we have been to your country, in particular, to Tehran and Shiraz. We were deeply impressed by Persepolis and some other historic places we saw. And it is so great that your people save those historic monuments for the future generations.

Dear Bijan! Why not to post a blog with these great pictures and interesting information about your history and traditions? There are many EC members who like to read about other countries and cultures. I would be the first to visit it.
