Strange Traditions

Well, lots of strange traditions exist in many communities living in the globe. In some communities in India, when the boy/son is born, Pedas (sweets made of milk) are distributed and when the girl/daughter is born, Jalebies (Cheaper Sweets) are distributed. This is a tradition of gender discrimination and it is found in the practice of the elite lot of the society also. When a woman is pregnant, suspense is in the air whether the neighbours and relatives would get Peda or Jalebi? The manner of distribution would also offend the feminists. Pedas are distributed with joy, while Jalebies only as a sort of formality. The traditional idea that the son is essentially important for the funeral rites of the father seems to have created this lop-sided mentality in the society.
