Hello everyone,

Another members discussion inspired me to post this discussion. It is great sometimes to be inspired from each other.

In ancient times a large part of the quotes/saying served a moralizing, didactically and educational purpose. Today many of the quotes/sayings carry along with them the breeze from ancient times and conveys the same messages.

"They are part of the language usage, and some language users, use them completely unconsciously as an integrated part of their language."

What function does the quotes/sayings actually have in the modern language usage? I believe they mostly serve a thoughtful and inspiring purpose. When we are in shortage of thoughts, when we are in shortage of words, they can inspire, help and comfort. Sometimes help us to look differently upon a situation.

I don't believe quotes/sayings are meant to change people, if that was so easily done, most of us would suffer from identity crisis.

One of my most favorite saying is this one, I also have it on my page;

Why? Because it is such a positive life confirming saying. It gives courage to not give up so easily upon things/persons that/whom matters to us. Because it teaches us to be determined, look through whatever may be the obstacles and try.

The tasks for the discussion are;

1/ Please share your most favorite quote/saying.

2/ Please try and explain why this is your favorite quote/saying.

3/ How do you interpret it.

4/ What does it mean to you personally.

Everyone without any exception is welcome to participate in the discussion. Hope to read many of your great thoughts here. Thank you.

Have fun and enjoy.

  • Hello Mishaikh,

    It is a very nice one, true one and cute one.

    I believe our feelings/emotions often reflects upon our faces and in our eyes. I often notice when I talk with people, and I find it fascinating.

    It is true our thoughts leave their traces on our faces whether they are happy or sad.

    I agree with ella it is a nice and beautiful quote. Happy to see you come back and sharing :) Thank you.

  • Hello Dear Rose,

    I had to read them a few times to get their meaning, as I said in one of the previous replies, we tend to interpret words according to our own understanding, so as for me.

    The first one;
    Made me think somehow of human rights but also on some other things, I am not going to write here. Remembering this - words can lie actions rarely do - made me wonder if I have done a person injustice, silence is sometimes the cause of misunderstandings, I don't know what to do, I judged because of the actions.

    Recalling - "but also for what we don't do."

    The second one;
    We also have here, something like this - "There is no shame in asking, if you don't understand."

    But somehow I think it has diverse meanings.

    The third one;
    :) I just have to say touché.

    Who said life, things, interacting with other people would be easier. I believe we are masters in complicating things for us selves sometimes.

    Thinking - Is essential and required.
    Imagination - Can't hurt others.
    Experiences - Makes us, whether positive or negative.

    Great share, I am really so happy to see your contribution here, Rose. Thank you so much for noticing and feeling like participating.
  • Hello Chitra,

    That is so true as it is said, though I would have liked if you had elaborated further ... but it is fine :)

    Permanent must be the basic and what also goes beyond, the people in our lives as we love.

    Thank you, Chitra, for sharing, noticing and for your participation.
  • Dear Evangelina, I will participate in your challenge wit three German sayings. Unfortunately I don't know the names of the authors.

    1. We are responsible not only for what we do but also for what we don't do.

    2. Who asks is a fool for five minutes, who does not ask, will be a fool for the rest of life.

    3. The human has three ways to act wisely:
       first way:           through thinking, that is the noblest,
       the second:      through imitation, this is the easiest,
       the third:         through experience, this is often the most
                                 bitter.

  • Hello Diah,

    Exactly, touché.

    It is as accurate as it is said, I can not counter argue that.

    I do agree with you.

    Thank you, Diah, for noticing discussion and for your participation.
  • Here is my favorite quotes from Ali Ibn Abi Thalib:

    "Never explain yourself to anyone, because the one who likes you would not need it, and the one who dislikes you wouldn't believe it."

    The reason why this is my favorite quote is because it is really enough to tell people who I am or about my identity. And also it is based on the fact that if we love someone, we will love all stuffs inside him/her and vice versa. I have experienced this personally and I have seen around about what happens in this world.

    So I think this quote is general that everyone can relate this to everything.

  • Mr. Josef,

    This was totally unexpected, therefore I have to say; Omg, you totally made my day with your beautiful comment. Thank you so much for noticing discussion and for liking.

    Have a fantastic weekend :)
