Numbness in hands

Have you ever faced in your life something like numbness in your hands or any other part of your body? I mean that kind of numbness which you feel in the morning just after waking up (but to be honest, that numbness is actually the reason of our waking up).

It was a long time ago since I last felt the numbness in my hands, but I remember it very well:

I am lying in my bed when I suddenly notice that something is wrong, but I keep on lying, because I haven't woken up completely yet, but that weird feeling grows with every second.

The first thought that comes to my mind was: "OMG, I don't feel my left hand!" The second one is: "OMG, I want to move my left hand but I don't feel it!" And the third one is: "OMG, I REALLY DON'T FEEL MY LEFT HAND - AM I DYING?!" When I try to move it, I feel as if my left hand is not mine any more - it moves as if it was alien! And then one more thought comes to my mind: "I am powerless and weak!" Then I take my left hand with my right hand and try to make it move as if controlled by signals from my brain.

Then after LONG 10 seconds, which seemed  to me, I feel that my left hand starts obeying me, and one more feeling appears - the feeling as if somebody is putting some scorching bengal fire to my hand... One minute later everything returns to normal.

I know, of course, that everything is OK, I have just lain on my left hand the whole night, but in the first seconds of that feeling, it looked really scary!!!

Please share your experience and feelings here! Good luck and have fun!

Thanks Roman for your information and thanks to Rahul as well. 2 months ago I had already visited a doctor and after some consultation, checking and test, nothing was serious indeed and he suggested me doing more exercise and if possible avoiding meat based food and controlling my weight :). I was 80 kgs and now 70 kgs, lighter but healthier.

Omg, have you read that link, which Rahul gave to me in the reply above? There are information about numbness which means that if you are facing such problem so often, then you really have to visit a doctor. 40? Omg, you are so young! Thank you for reply! Have a good day!

Thanks Roman for sharing your scary experience, I always feel the numbness in my left leg when taking a 15 hours journey by night bus.

First time, almost like yours, anxious and scary but I still could feel my stiff leg and then after about 2 minutes it turned normal.

Now, in my 40s, numbness is my morning alarm :).

  • Wow, Rose! "you usually wake up only when the hand is completely insensitive. These sensations are called paresthesia. Numbness differs from paralysis in that one has no feeling, but the hand can still move." it is right exactly like it is... I mean it is 100% true and i wanted to say that too:) and even in that link of Rahul i didn't found this information :) (Sorry Rahul bhai :) ). Thank you for your comment! I am excited because of your comment:) Thank you!

If one occasionally wakes up with an unfeeling, deaf hand, it is mostly due to the fact that one has placed on the arm or the hand and has strangled the blood. However, if it occurs regularly, it can be a disease that leads to the numbness of the hands.

An injury to the nerves in the hands by a disease or an accident can lead to temporary insensibility. Most of the time, you feel the pricking and burning before the hand becomes deaf. If this happens during sleep, you usually wake up only when the hand is completely insensitive. These sensations are called paresthesia. Numbness differs from paralysis in that one has no feeling, but the hand can still move.

Sometimes frequent occurrence of deaf hands points to carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome can spread into elbows, neck, and shoulders.
There can be also other reasons for numb hands. In that case, we should consult a doctor. My advice is to consult a specialist, a hand surgeon because they are specialized for surgeries on the sensitive parts on the hands. Here in Germany may not operate a normal surgeon those sensitive parts on the hands.
I have my own experiences with hand numbness as a result of carpal tunnel syndrome on my left hand.
A witness of the surgery on my hand is a small scar.
The normal numbness on my hands how described at the beginning of my comment I know also very well. It's always confusing and strange to realize that we can't control the function of one of our body parts.
