Writing Prompt ~ Each and Every

Nancy was flipping through each and every page of her moms diary suddenly something caught her eyes ‘June 3, 1989’ date marked in red. She started reading…

I reached Office at 10am.Receptionist greeted me with a brief smile. I handed over my interview letter to her. She is a blonde woman with sparkling blue eyes. She looked so happy & carefree. She gave me a token number & asked me to wait outside. I counted every second with bated breath for my turn. Finally my number appeared on the screen, I reached reception desk with in no time.

She asked me to go inside the Discussion room #2.The room was fully occupied. Everyone looked stressed. After 5 minutes three women in black suits entered the room. Every one stood up to welcome the judges. They asked each one of us to introduce ourselves. It took almost one hour when everyone has done with their introduction part. They gave each one of us a paper and a pen& asked everyone to write about their biggest achievement in life. Time given was 2 minutes. Because of time constraint I sketched my biggest achievement – My Car

She collected paper from every one after the said time. She arbitrarily selected few girls & boys from our group and asked each one of them to read out the papers loudly. Though everyone tried but no one could complete the given task within the stipulated time. They completed reading every paper except mine. I raised my hand but the judges asked me to wait. She said I will give each one of you another 1 minute to complete this task & everyone started writing.

Time over she said and started collecting the papers from every one. She went through all the papers in an iota of second & said “Do you guys know the difference between hard work and smart work?

She lifted my paper & pointed finger against me. Everyone turned back. She continued “Only she has finished this task within the given time & she added it’s not like how you do your task but how effectively you can do it within the stipulated time is what matters the most”. She turned back to me & said with a smile "You are selected for the next round of interview".

Nancy closed the diary. Her eyes glistened, and she looked at the diary & proudly said “Mom definitely I will get through this interview”. Love you Mom

  • Thank you Tara for your valuable suggestion :-)
  • Great writing! I'm so happy that some of the MyEC members are trying the weekly Writing Prompts. It's great to see that you are also comfortable adapting these prompts to write something that interests you! I enjoyed this story.

Be careful with every one and everyone. You can write: Every one of us/them (each individual) for  emphasis), but in most cases "everyone/everybody" (all of the people) is the word you want.

Writing tip: In most types of English writing it is better to spell out "and" rather than using "&" in writing. You may notice "&" being used in titles, company names, text messaging, social media updates, etc.

  • Thank you all :-)
  • Interesting story.

  • A very nice blog.

  • Very impressive way to show the use of these writing prompts.  Congratulations!

  • I like this one Niki. You used each and every a lot too. :)
