Writing Challenge: Compound Nouns

Some people assume that English teachers are wonderful spellers. This is not true! In fact, many of us have to review spelling rules regularly. We also have to review other aspects of the language before we teach a lesson. One thing I have trouble remembering is compound nouns. I often find myself looking up words just to be sure they are one word rather than two. Sometimes these words end up being hyphenated. I've noticed on MyEC that many other people have the same problem. This month, let's practise using compound nouns.

Your Task

1) Review EnglishClub's lesson on compound nouns. (Learn all 3 types.)

2) Create a list of 10 compound nouns that you want to remember. Search for lists of "compound nouns" online.

3) Add a new blog post. Use the title: Writing Challenge: My Compound Noun List

4) Challenge a few MyEC members to write 10 sentences about other MyEC members (or about MyEC) using YOUR word list. The members can write their example sentences in the comments of your post. Make sure the member(s) sees your challenge!

5) Share a link to your word list in the comments of this post as well.

*Optional: Add the best sentences to your post with credit to the writers. (Try to fix any errors.) Record the sentences and share the MP3 file. Don't forget the rules about the pronunciation of compound nouns.

My Word List

1. ice cream

2. high school

3. hairdresser

4. blackboard

5. bus stop

6. sister-in-law

7. swimming pool

8. five-year-old

9. redhead

10. takeout

*I challenge all of the EC Mods to write example sentences using these words! (Anyone is welcome to try.) The best sentences will be added to this post.

  • @Nadira Thanks for joining! I love your examples. Keep in mind that hyphens help the reader out in those two words. It's easier for the brain to read as one noun when they are connected in that way. Note that "blackboard" and "whiteboard" are typically one word when referring to the object in the classroom. Have you seen these used with spaces? These are two words I always seem to check. Also, you don't need an article (a) with "takeout".

  • @Expector Great responses! I hope you'll think of some more compound nouns and add them to your blog too! I love your sentence about your five-year-old. Mine is about to turn six! :(

  • @Nafis Great! Can you fix two small errors in these two sentences?

    4. blackboard: The professor got mad [why] the blackboards are not erased by the previous professor.

    5. bus stop: Two lovers were kissing at the bus stop as if there [is] no tomorrow.

  • @Maghol

    Keen is correct.

For example if you had a busy day you might just go to McDonald's for takeout (food is in the bag instead of on a tray) instead of sitting in the restaurant.

  • Great Challenge!

You'll see a lot of compound nouns in the medical English, such as blood type. I wonder who keep making such compound nouns for us and if we can make/create our own compound nouns for others to use? You bet there are always newly-created compound nouns.

And, there are always exceptions, such as sports center/centre. This is the tricky part of English.

My example sentences are as follows:

ice cream - I don't really like ice cream.

high school - My son graduated from the hight school two years ago.

hairdresser - My wife has her own hairdresser.

blackboard - I enjoyed his handwriting on the blackboard.

bus stop - I used to wait at the bus stop.

    sister-in-law - I wish I had a sister-in-law.

swimming pool - If only there was/were a swimming pool in my backyard!

five-year-old - I still remember how cute my five-year-old son was.

redhead - I wonder why a redhead tends to draw more attention.

takeout - I used to drive my son to the restaurant for his takeout.

  • Dear Tara, it's my pleasure. Here are my sentences:

    1. ice cream: The first modern ice cream was invented by Mrs. Mary Ealse in England.

    2. high school: Have you ever escaped from your high school?

    3. hairdresser: A hairdresser used the conditioner to dye the lady’s hair.

    Have a great time,
