  • Corrections to my challenge:
    1. Another reasons are the new technologies, the TV channels, and especially the "Web". Correction: "Other reasons are"...

    2. Moreover, people who wants to improve their quality of life immigrate to developing countries which are English-speaking countries.
Correction: "developing countries" generally refers to poorer countries that are not industrialized. I think the writer meant, "Moreover, people who want to improve their quality of life move to English-speaking countries that are more developed.

    3. Then why they'd like to speak dialect?
without language we can not communicate with people from different contries and since many people are using english so it's impotant to learn it . Correction: Then why would they...since many people are using English it's important to learn it.

    4. Likewise, people need keep our mother tongue it's make who we are, I love English but I love my first language too. Correction: "We need to keep our mother tongue because it makes us who we are. I love English, but I love my first language too.

    5. As a result the world-wide market adopted the English language in their products as an easier way to become it known and to conquer their customers. Correction: "make it known". Also "conquer" seems like the wrong word here. To "win over" would be better.

    6. Why English is so popular or what makes English the most used language in the globe? Correction: "Why is English so popular... "on the globe"?

    7. However, as Sri lankans we like to keep "Sinhala" as a pure language , because of that Sinhala doesn't expand at all but at the same time English is expanding like a air balloon. Correction: "However, as Sri Lankans we like to keep "Sinhala" as a pure language. Due to this fact, (or "Because of this") Sinhala doesn't grow at all while English is expanding like a hot air balloon (an air balloon)."

8.In my country, the government change the policy that Mathematics and science must in English. Correction: "In my country, the government changed the policy that Mathematics and Science must be taught in English."OR "In my country, the new government policy is that Math and Science be taught in English."

    9. Students should study English since primary school and grow with English and this is just about to happen. Correction (because it was awkward): "Students should start studying English in primary school in order to grow up with the language. This is going to be the case soon."

    10. Discovering new technologies , developing science and maintaining a stable economy they have spread an image of successful country and as a consequence their language followed the same way. Correction: "By discovering new technologies , developing science and maintaining a stable economy, the US has gained the reputation of being a successful country. As a consequence their language has been adopted internationally."

Note: There are lots of other ways of rewriting these sentences! Thanks to all of the advanced learners for helping out.
  • Nice work on the prepositions! You discovered that "in" the globe is not used. It's confusing because we say "in the world" and "on the globe" or "across the globe".
  • Prepositions that can be used with globe:all over the, across the,on the, around the...

Ruzan:"However,as Sri Lankans we would like to keep Sinhala as a pure languge, because Sinhala doesn't expand at all,but at the same time English is expanding like an air balloon."

Taki:5. "As a result, the world-wide markets are using English language to advertise their products because it's an easy way to reach and conquer new customers".

Nucha:"Then, they won't be able to use the language to communicate with people from other countries, since the majority of people are connecting and communicating with each other in English."

I did my best, but I'm not sure whether I got it right this time or made even more mistakes :)

    Regards,
    Tara

  • Since this is a "Writing Challenge" I'd like to challenge the advanced learners to correct a few sentences. I copied 10 sentences directly from your amazing opinion paragraphs. Anyone can try to fix the errors (some are very small). You can try all of the sentences, or just pick a few. Write your corrections in the comment section. Good-luck!

  • Interesting comment, Jose! Many people call English "beautiful". I think Spanish and French sound more beautiful. Do you think it's because these are foreign languages to me? It's unfortunate that only wealthy people can afford to teach their children English in Mexico. That is one great thing about EnglishClub.com. It's free and anyone with Internet access can learn English, even Young Learners!
  • English is one of the languages spoken the most around the world, it's a beautiful language which everyone wanted to use in its four skills, unfortunately it does not happen everywhere be cause governments have not made enough to this happen their problems are bigger than their need for their citicens to learn English, at least this happen in Mexico my beautiful country. Students should study English since primary school and grow with English and this is just about to happen. Only the States with major economical resources give English to their kids
  • Meissa, great opinion essay! Your use of vocabulary is exceptional. Nice transitions too. It's amazing to me that children as young as 2 are learning English in other countries. EnglishClub recently created a set of lessons for babies and parents because there is a large demand for this type of thing. It seems young learners are getting younger and younger, whether its soccer, dance, or learning English.

Faiki, your powerful statement deserves repeating: "the power of English is only a consequence of the power of the anglophone countries that lead the world." In Canada many people (especially on the west coast) are wondering if we should teach our children Mandarin as a second language rather than French.
  • A+ for you Ruzan! Excellent writing. My favourite line of yours is: "In my opinion, English language is not a tsunami, but on the contrary it is the facilitator of a conversation between cultures."

Ahmed, I love your use of quotations. Members like you are helping learners discover new language! I've never heard of English as being the "liveliest" language. This is one of my favourite parts of teaching. Second language learners find new ways of using words that native speakers may not think of. Thank you for sharing your opinions!
