Watching movies is one of my hobbies, whenever I have a spare time, I turn on the television and check out the best movies available. One particular channel is Starmovies. It shows or airs movies that has subtitles. My viewing habits became more interesting because I can fully understand the dialogue of every actor. Did you know that through the subtitles, we could practice our reading and listening skills? Yes, you heard me right. When we try to read the words shown as subtitle, somehow our reading ability progresses. No matter how fast the dialogue may seem, we can try to apprehend what was flashing on the television. Good thing because of that we can easily spot new words and add to the lists of our vocabularies.

Aside from learning new words, we could also be familiar with the pronunciation of the words. If it is an American word it's much easier to understand but the British slang is interesting to hear just like the characters of Harry Potter or Kate Winslet's dialogue in the movie "Titanic". I bet everybody is familiar with her. How about the way Celine Dion speaks whenever she has an interview. The combination of her French and Canadian descent made her appealing to the audience around the world. I'm sure there are a lot of celebrities and their movies that we could try to watch and understand how they speak in their own way.

There are still a lot of benefits in watching movies with subtitles. If you have ideas other that what I mentioned above, feel free to share it with me.

So what was the movie you've seen that has subtitle? Did you understand the story very well. I bet you did....

  • Hi Addel,
That's alright my friend. I listened to the song you posted on my other topic. It's in Urdu if I'm not mistaken. May I know if Urdu is different from Arabic? Is it spoken by Arab countries? I'm just curious. Thanks for replying on my message. I hope you're doing great...
  • @ Dr llody,

Thank you for accepting my request and for sending me this wonderful graphic. I really appreciate it. Have a nice day.....

  • Hello Addel,

Thank you very much for taking your time to read and to comment on my blog. I really appreciate it. As what Joe's ESL Secret #3, and Nafis' comments, it really hastens our listening skills if we try to listen closely to every dialogue or conversation of speakers. Whatever works for you that's fine.

I noticed your writing, it would be great if you try to practice writing with proper capitalization right? Anyway, thanks again for the nice words and for being thoughtful. I'm really lucky for being your friend. Take care!

  • @ Ranu Ario,

Hi there Ranu, I,m glad that you're fond of watching American TV series. They are not only entertaining but educational, well with a little bit of violence. I usually watch American Idol and Criminal Minds. There are a lot of informative programs like the documentaries from CNN.

I also try watching English shows so I could practice listening to British slang. By the way thank you for sharing your views regarding this blog.

  • @ Ramona,

Thanks my friend for responding on this blog. I'm glad you too find watching with subtitles is important. Take care...

  • I usually watch American TV Series Robert,

Each TV Series usually has a different theme, mythology and vocabularies. It's great to switch from one TV Series to another and learn new vocabularies, learn what's new on American culture now (especially if we watch recent TV Series), new slang words.

And then visit different fansites for each TV Series. Read the interview from the actors and actress. Also the reviews. Or maybe write our own review.

  • Hello Nafis,

Thank you for the comment you wrote here on my blog. Yes I forgot to put a comma in a coordinating conjunction "but". Thanks for reminding me.

I'd seen Patch Adams many years ago, but I couldn't forget Robin Williams red thing in his nose (in that movie). He looked like a clown. I always admire him for combining comedy and drama in his movies. Take care my friend...

  • Dear Robert, I like to watch movies without subtitles because subtitles are distracting. This also has another advantage. I just train my ears. So, I just try to hear rather than reading. Have you seen Patch Adams? it's a nice movie!

    Correction:

whenever I have a spare time

If it is an American word it's much easier to understand, (to put comma before but) but the British ...

    Have a nice time,

  • Oops... sorry Tara, I just overlooked the writing challenges that was featured before. So I edited my writing challenge and numbered it 31. My apologies...
