Why ring finger?

I did 15 minutes research to find out why do we use the left fourth finger as ring finger. Some source say the story began  2,800 years Before Christ in Egypt. The Old Egyptian believes that the left fourth finger is the only finger that have big artery connected directly to heart which is "Vena Amori" in latin which means vein of love.

In some culture use right fourth finger as ring finger such as German, Chilean, Orthodox Christian, East European and Jewish people.

This is my first Blog and might be the shortest blog ever. lol

I would really appreciate if anyone provide more information and makes it more clear to me about why do we use fourth finger as ring finger. Whether left or right hand still have to be the fourth finger, Why?

  • Evangelina, Nice notice :)

I was thinking that an artery supply good blood and where artery goes, vein goes too as to flow low oxygen blood out. I just don't get it why people choose to called an imagined blood tube in that finger "vein" as I think It's about marriage it should be the one that supply good blood which full with oxygen so I put artery instead. lol

Choosing "vein" to call that tube is interesting to me too.

  • pint,

First let me say, congratulations many times on writing your first blog :)

And then, ooooh what a cutie cute topic - Vena Amori, I really like that name, it sounds good.

In ancient times people did actually believe a vein tied the ring finger directly with the heart. Therefore still today applying the wedding ring on the right ring finger is still a symbol of eternal love.

Btw, just a little correction/reflection, how can an artery turn out to be a vena, maybe you should have written “veins” instead :)

Good job, nice share - Hope to see many great posts from you, pint.
  • Mishaikh, Thank you so much for question. It inspired me in searching for answer. Here what I found.

I think It's something called "The Cervical Syndrome" From Pseudo-angina pectoris Which can cause several symtoms and symtoms at ring finger is one of them. Maybe It made Ancient Egyptian thought their are vein connected to the heart.

  • I don't know pint, but I do know one thing. In angina (heart trouble) pain move from left shoulder to this finger. Why not to other finger?
  • Rose, Thank you for more information.

    Rosemary, Thanks for the compliment.

Mishaikh, That's interesting. How could fourth finger become the closest finger to a heart?

Roman, Thank you so much for your support.

    :)

  • Hi Pint! It is good blog! I also heard about that vein of love, but unfortunately or fortunately it is fairy tale:) I don't know what is the difference between right or left fourth  finger. Maybe it belongs to left-handed or right-handed people? Anyway thank you for sharing!:) Congratulation with your first blog! Keep writing! :)

  • I have heard that it is because it closest to our heart!

  • It is a short but an informative blog in the same time . Actually , as I know so far . The ring is away to announce marriage . It resembles the wedlock , which , is a very strong bond

  • I do know also the same as you do. In antiquity, the belief was, a vein from the left ring finger leads directly to the heart and therefore to the love, which is why both Egyptians and Romans wore the wedding ring on that finger.

I read also publications, the ring finger became his function and name because the people recognized that the look of the ring on the fourth finger looks better than on other fingers. The theory of the vein with the direct way to the heart is only a fairy tale, a romantic imagination. There isn't a single vein with a direct way from any fingers to the heart.

Thanks for this nice blog ... to wonder, where habits and traditions come from.
